Evaluation of monolithic crystal detector with dual-ended readout utilizing multiplexing method

Objective.Monolithic crystal detectors are increasingly being applied in positron emission tomography (PET) devices owing to their excellent depth-of-interaction (DOI) resolution capabilities and high detection efficiency. In this study, we constructed and evaluated a dual-ended readout monolithic crystal detector based on a multiplexing method.Approach.We employed two 12 × 12 silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays for readout, and the signals from the 12 × 12 array were merged into 12 X and 12 Y channels using channel multiplexing. In 2D reconstruction, three methods based on the centre of gravity (COG) were compared, and the concept of thresholds was introduced. Furthermore, a light convolutional neural network (CNN) was employed for testing. To enhance depth localization resolution, we proposed a method by utilizing the mutual information from both ends of the SiPMs. The source width and collimation effect were simulated using GEANT4, and the intrinsic spatial resolution was separated from the measured values.Main results.At an operational voltage of 29 V for the SiPM, an energy resolution of approximately 12.5 % was achieved. By subtracting a 0.8 % threshold from the total energy in every channel, a 2D spatial resolution of approximately 0.90 mm full width at half maximum (FWHM) can be obtained. Furthermore, a higher level of resolution, approximately 0.80 mm FWHM, was achieved using a CNN, with some alleviation of edge effects. With the proposed DOI method, a significant 1.36 mm FWHM average DOI resolution can be achieved. Additionally, it was found that polishing and black coating on the crystal surface yielded smaller edge effects compared to a rough surface with a black coating.Significance.The introduction of a threshold in COG method and a dual-ended readout scheme can lead to excellent spatial resolution for monolithic crystal detectors, which can help to develop PET systems with both high sensitivity and high spatial resolution.

Comparison of arithmetic mean and energy-weighted mean flood histogram generation methods for dual-ended readout PET detectors

PURPOSE

Dual-ended readout pixelated scintillator array detectors can provide a suitable crystal resolvability and satisfactory depth of interaction (DOI), energy, and timing resolutions. Usually, the flood histogram measured by one-sided readout is depth dependent, and the flood histogram quality degrades as the distance between the interaction site and photodetector increases. Information measured by two photodetectors must be combined to obtain an improved flood histogram yielding a better PET scanner spatial resolution.

METHODS

Two flood histogram generation algorithms for dual-ended readout of pixelated scintillator array detectors were compared by theoretical calculations and experimental measurements. The first algorithm is the arithmetic mean (AM) algorithm, which assigns the same weight to the flood histograms measured by photodetectors 1 and 2. The second algorithm is the energy-weighted mean (EWM) algorithm, which assigns each flood histogram a certain weight proportional to the energy measured by the photodetector. Theoretical equations were derived to determine the quality of the flood histograms obtained with these two algorithms. Experimental measurements were performed with an 18 × 18 lutetium-yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO) array with a crystal size of 0.62 × 0.62 × 20 mm³ read out by two multi-anode photomultiplier tubes at both ends. Flood histograms of the whole array and five specific depths were compared between the above two algorithms.

RESULTS

The theoretical results indicated that the flood histograms obtained with the EWM method matched those obtained with the AM method at the middle detector depth and were better at other detector depths when the distance (S) between the locations of the same crystal in the flood histograms measured by photodetectors 1 and 2 reached 0. The advantage of the EWM method decreased with increasing S value since the crystal position in the flood histogram obtained with the EWM method varies with the depth when S does not equal 0. The advantage of the EWM method decreased with increasing S value. The experimental results generally agreed with the theoretical predictions. Compared to the AM method, the EWM method provided a similar flood histogram at a depth of 10 mm but generated a better flood histogram at depths of 2 and 18 mm. Although an inverse correlation between Q (a quality factor representing the advantage of the EWM method) and S was observed, the variation in Q given the same S value was high. The average Q value at the same S still agreed with the theoretical predictions.

CONCLUSIONS

Theoretical equations were derived, and experimental measurements were performed to compare two flood histogram generation algorithms for dual-ended readout PET detectors. The results indicated that the EWM method based on inverse variance weighting theory could provide better flood histograms than those provided by the AM method. Hybrid total-body pet scanners-current status and future perspectives

Purpose Since the 1990s, PET has been successfully combined with MR or CT systems. In the past years, especially PET systems have seen a trend towards an enlarged axial field of view (FOV), up to a factor of ten. Methods Conducting a thorough literature research, we summarize the status quo of contemporary total-body (TB) PET/CT scanners and give an outlook on possible future developments. Results Currently, three human TB PET/CT systems have been developed: The PennPET Explorer, the uExplorer, and the Biograph Vision Quadra realize aFOVs between 1 and 2 m and show a tremendous increase in system sensitivity related to their longer gantries. Conclusion The increased system sensitivity paves the way for short-term, low-dose, and dynamic TB imaging as well as new examination methods in almost all areas of imaging.

Development of dual-ended depth-of-interaction detectors using laser-induced crystals for small animal PET systems

Sensitivity and spatial resolution of positron emission tomography (PET) scanners can be improved by using thicker scintillation crystals with depth-of-interaction (DOI) encoding. Subsurface laser engraving (SSLE) can be used to segment crystals of a scintillation detector in order to fabricate a DOI detector. We previously applied SSLE to crystal bars of 3 × 3 × 20 mm³and 1.5 × 1.5 × 20 mm³and developed two dual-ended detectors with DOI segments of 3 mm and 1.5 mm, respectively. To further improve the DOI resolution, our SSLE detector design can be used with smaller pitch crystal bars, making them excellent detector candidates for small animal PET scanners with submillimetre resolution. In the present study, three small crystal bars of 1 × 1 × 20 mm³, 2 × 1 × 20 mm³, and 2 × 1 × 40 mm³were laser engraved to 12, 20 and 40 segments, respectively, by applying SSLE in their height directions. The segmented crystal bars were characterised in three prototype detector arrangements. First, the 1 × 1 × 20 mm³crystal bars were characterised in an 8 × 8 crystal array designed for DOI encoding along crystal height in a conventional small animal PET design. Second, a 4 × 8 crystal array of 2 × 1 × 20 mm³crystal bars was characterised for using the DOI information for crystal interaction positioning along the axial axis of a small animal PET scanner. Finally, the third part of the study was performed on a single 2 × 1 × 40 mm³crystal bar with 40 segments to investigate the feasibility of DOI estimation in longer crystals for application in a system with extended axial length. We evaluated the capability of segment identification and energy resolution of theses detectors. The 3D position maps of the detectors were obtained using the Anger-type calculation and the crystal identification performance was evaluated for each detector. Clear segment separation was obtained for the crystal arrays with 12 (segment pitch of 1.67 mm) and 20 (segment pitch of 1 mm) segments. Mean energy resolutions of 8.8% ± 0.4% and 9.6% ± 0.8% at 511 keV were obtained for the segments in the central regions of the 8 × 8 array with 12 segments and the 4 × 8 array with 20 segments, respectively. Clear segment identification was found to be difficult for the detector with 40 segments, especially for the segments at the middle of the crystal. Energy and interaction positioning characterisation results suggest that both prototype detectors with 12 and 20 segments are well suited for small animal PET scanners with high spatial resolution.

Optimisation of monolithic nanocomposite and transparent ceramic scintillation detectors for positron emission tomography

High-resolution arrays of discrete monocrystalline scintillators used for gamma photon coincidence detection in PET are costly and complex to fabricate, and exhibit intrinsically non-uniform sensitivity with respect to emission angle. Nanocomposites and transparent ceramics are two alternative classes of scintillator materials which can be formed into large monolithic structures, and which, when coupled to optical photodetector arrays, may offer a pathway to low cost, high-sensitivity, high-resolution PET. However, due to their high optical attenuation and scattering relative to monocrystalline scintillators, these materials exhibit an inherent trade-off between detection sensitivity and the number of scintillation photons which reach the optical photodetectors. In this work, a method for optimising scintillator thickness to maximise the probability of locating the point of interaction of 511 keV photons in a monolithic scintillator within a specified error bound is proposed and evaluated for five nanocomposite materials (LaBr3:Ce-polystyrene, Gd2O3-polyvinyl toluene, LaF3:Ce-polystyrene, LaF3:Ce-oleic acid and YAG:Ce-polystyrene) and four ceramics (GAGG:Ce, GLuGAG:Ce, GYGAG:Ce and LuAG:Pr). LaF3:Ce-polystyrene and GLuGAG:Ce were the best-performing nanocomposite and ceramic materials, respectively, with maximum sensitivities of 48.8% and 67.8% for 5 mm localisation accuracy with scintillator thicknesses of 42.6 mm and 27.5 mm, respectively.

Feasibility Study of a Small Animal PET Insert Based on a Single LYSO Monolithic Tube

There are drawbacks with using a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner design employing the traditional arrangement of multiple detectors in an array format. Typically PET systems are constructed with many regular gaps between the detector modules in a ring or box configuration, with additional axial gaps between the rings. Although this has been significantly reduced with the use of the compact high granularity SiPM photodetector technology, such a scanner design leads to a decrease in the number of annihilation photons that are detected causing lower scanner sensitivity. Moreover, the ability to precisely determine the line of response (LOR) along which the positron annihilated is diminished closer to the detector edges because the spatial resolution there is degraded due to edge effects. This happens for both monolithic based designs, caused by the truncation of the scintillation light distribution, but also for detector blocks that use crystal arrays with a number of elements that are larger than the number of photosensors and, therefore, make use of the light sharing principle. In this report we present a design for a small-animal PET scanner based on a single monolithic annulus-like scintillator that can be used as a PET insert in high-field Magnetic Resonance systems. We provide real data showing the performance improvement when edge-less modules are used. We also describe the specific proposed design for a rodent scanner that employs facetted outside faces in a single LYSO tube. In a further step, in order to support and prove the proposed edgeless geometry, simulations of that scanner have been performed and lately reconstructed showing the advantages of the design.

Developing a 'multiPatchPET' system in GATE for a PET system design with irregular geometries

This work modified the commonly used Monte Carlo tool package GATE by developing a new 'multiPatchPET' system so that GATE users can easily simulate PET systems with irregular geometries. The motivation was to design a brain PET scanner with high sensitivity. It is known that compact PET scanners with a large solid coverage angle can achieve high sensitivity with fewer scintillation detectors, and thus have the potential to provide better image quality in brain PET imaging than conventional ring PET scanners. However, considering a straightforward example with the largest possible solid angle, a spherical PET scanner is hard to manufacture. A more practical alternative would be a sphere-like polyhedral PET scanner with flat detector patches. Moreover, when monolithic scintillators are chosen to construct these flat detector modules, detection efficiency is further improved. Thus, we plan to design a sphere-like polyhedral PET scanner made up of monolithic scintillators. Unfortunately, in our design study, we found that simulating such a scanner with the latest GATE version (8.0) was not trivial, since no predefined systems could be used. In this work we introduced a 'multiPatchPET' system to GATE, which we and other GATE users will be able to use to develop PET scanners with any irregular geometry and any shape of patch. To validate our modification, a single block detector and an mCT scanner were simulated via both the original 'ecat' system and the new 'multiPatchPET' system. The results show no difference in terms of the detecting efficiency and reconstruction image. Then we used the 'multiPatchPET' system to simulate an 86 surface polyhedral brain PET scanner. Compared with two cylindrical brain scanners, the polyhedral brain scanner shows a higher sensitivity and has fewer noisy images. Thus, it was proved that our modification, which is accessible to the nuclear imaging research community, equipped GATE with a powerful and user-friendly tool to simulate complex scanners with irregular patches easily.

Performance of a SiPM based semi-monolithic scintillator PET detector

A depth encoding PET detector module using semi-monolithic scintillation crystal single-ended readout by a SiPM array was built and its performance was measured. The semi-monolithic scintillator detector consists of 11 polished LYSO slices measuring 1  ×  11.6  ×  10 mm³. The slices are glued together with enhanced specular reflector (ESR) in between and outside of the slices. The bottom surface of the slices is coupled to a 4  ×  4 SiPM array with a 1 mm light guide and silicon grease between them. No reflector is used on the top surface and two sides of the slices to reduce the scintillation photon reflection. The signals of the 4  ×  4 SiPM array are grouped along rows and columns separately into eight signals. Four SiPM column signals are used to identify the slices according to the center of the gravity of the scintillation photon distribution in the pixelated direction. Four SiPM row signals are used to estimate the y (monolithic direction) and z (depth of interaction) positions according to the center of the gravity and the width of the scintillation photon distribution in the monolithic direction, respectively. The detector was measured with 1 mm sampling interval in both the y and z directions with electronic collimation by using a 0.25 mm diameter ²²Na point source and a 1  ×  1  ×  20 mm³ LYSO crystal detector. An average slice based energy resolution of 14.9% was obtained. All slices of 1 mm thick were clearly resolved and a detector with even thinner slices could be used. The y positions calculated with the center of gravity method are different for interactions happening at the same y, but different z positions due to depth dependent edge effects. The least-square minimization and the maximum likelihood positioning algorithms were developed and both methods improved the spatial resolution at the edges of the detector as compared with the center of gravity method. A mean absolute error (MAE) which is defined as the probability-weighted mean of the absolute value of the positioning error is used to evaluate the spatial resolution. An average MAE spatial resolution of ~1.15 mm was obtained in both y and z directions without rejection of the multiple scattering events. The average MAE spatial resolution was ~0.7 mm in both y and z directions after the multiple scattering events were rejected. The timing resolution of the detector is 575 ps. In the next step, long rectangle detector will be built to reduce edge effects and improve the spatial resolution of the semi-monolithic detector. Thick detector up to 20 mm will be explored and the positioning algorithms will be further optimized.
