Spatial variation of life-history traits in Bulinus truncatus, the intermediate host of schistosomes, in the context of field application of niclosamide in Côte d’Ivoire

Identification of freshwater snail species and survey of their trematode infections in Ordos, China

In order to investigate and study the species and distribution of freshwater snails in Ordos area of Inner Mongolia, as well as the trematode infection in different periods, and to provide a scientific basis for the effective prevention and control of livestock trematodiasis. In this paper, freshwater snails distributed in Ordos were widely collected for morphological identification, and PCR amplification of freshwater snails COI gene and ITS2 gene was carried out with the help of molecular biology. At the same time, microscopic examination was used to observe the trematode infection of freshwater snails in two different periods from May to July and July to September, and the molecular biology of the trematodes was identified. The results showed that the 1796 freshwater snails collected belonged to two orders, three families and four genera, i.e. Bellamya, Radix, Galba, and Gyraulus. Microscopic examination of snails showed that the infection rate of trematode larvae from July to September was significantly higher than that from May to July. The collected trematodes were identified as five species, namely Cotylurus marcogliesei, Fasciola hepatica, Fasciola gigantica, Paramphistomum cervi, and Parastrigea robusta. The combination of freshwater snail species in Ordos and the infection of trematode in snails showed that a large number of freshwater snails were infected with trematodes, especially from July to September, when there is more rain and suitable climate, which causes serious harm to local livestock.

Ovicidal, immunotoxic and endocrine disrupting effects of saponin on Bulinus truncatus snails with special emphasize on the oxidative stress parameters, genotoxicological, and histopathological alterations

Bulinus truncatus snail is one of the most medically important snails. The goal of this study was to evaluate the molluscicidal effect of saponin on these snails and study how it affects their biological functions. The present results showed that saponin had a molluscicidal activity against adult B. truncatus snails after 24h and 72h with LC50 (57.5 and 27.1 ppm, respectively) and had ovicidal acivity on the snails' embryos. By studying the effect of the sublethal concentrations (LC10 48.63 ppm or LC25 52.83 ppm) exposure on B. truncatus snails, they resulted in significant decreases in the survivorship, egg-laying, and the reproductive rate compared to untreated snails. Both concentrations caused morphological changes to the snails' hemocytes, where, after the exposure, granulocytes and hyalinocytes had irregular outer cell membrane and some cell formed pseudopodia. Granulocytes had large number of granules, vacuoles, while hyalinocytes' nucleus was shrunken. Also, these concentrations resulted in significant increases in sex hormone levels (17β-estradiol and testosterone) in tissue homogenate of B. truncatus snails. It resulted in significant decrease in total antioxidant (TAO) activity, while, significantly increased lipid peroxidase (LPO) level, superoxide dismutase (SOD), nitrogen oxide (NO), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) as compared to control group. Histopathological and genotoxicological damages occurred in snails' tissue after exposure to these concentrations. Conclusion, saponin has a molluscicidal effect on B. truncatus snails and might be used for the control of schistosomiasis haematobium. Besides, these snails could be used as invertebrate models to reflect the toxic effects of saponin in the aquatic ecosystem.

Understanding key vectors and vector-borne diseases associated with freshwater ecosystem across Africa: Implications for public health

The emerging and re-emerging vector-borne diseases transmitted by key freshwater organisms have remained a global concern. As one of the leading biodiversity hotspots, the African ecoregion is suggested to harbour the highest number of freshwater organisms globally. Among the commonly found organisms in the African ecoregion are mosquitoes and snails, with a majority of their life cycle in freshwater, and these freshwater organisms can transmit diseases or serve as carriers of devastating diseases of public health concerns. However, synthetic studies to link the evident abundant presence and wide distribution of these vectors across the freshwater ecosystems in Africa with the increasing emerging and re-emerging vector-borne diseases in Africa are still limited. Here, we reviewed documented evidence on vector-borne diseases and their transmission pathways in Africa to reduce the knowledge gap on the factors influencing the increasing emerging and re-emerging vector-borne diseases across Africa. We found the population distributions or abundance of these freshwater organisms to be increasing, which is directly associated with the increasing emerging and re-emerging vector-borne diseases across Africa. Furthermore, we found that although the current changing environmental conditions in Africa affect the habitats of these freshwater organisms, current changing environmental conditions may not be suppressing the population distributions or abundance of these freshwater organisms. Instead, we found that these freshwater organisms are extending their geographic ranges across Africa, which may have significant public health implications in Africa. Thus, our study demonstrates the need for future studies to integrate the environmental conditions of vectors' habitats to understand if these environmental conditions directly or indirectly influence the vectorial capacities and transmission abilities of vectors of diseases. We propose that such studies will be necessary to guide policymakers in making informed policies to help control vector-borne diseases.
