Facile and scalable preparation of ZIF-67 decorated cotton fibers as recoverable and efficient adsorbents for removal of malachite green

Cyclodextrin-based host-guest hierarchical fire retardants: Synthesis and novel strategy to endow polylactic acid fire retardancy and UV resistance

β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD) with a cage-like supramolecular structure possesses the hydrophobic internal ring and external hydroxyl groups, which are beneficial for intramolecular interactions known as "host-guest" chemistry. This study presents a β-CD-based three-functions-in-one and host-guest fire retardant (βCD-MOF@Schiff base), which incorporates self-crosslinking Schiff base into its cavity and modification of its surface by metal-organic framework (MOF). With the presence of 5 wt% of βCD-MOF@Schiff base, the LOI value of PLA composites increased to 29 % and showed 15 %, 17 % and 62 % reductions in peak heat release rate (pHRR), total heat release (THR), and the yield of hazard gas carbon monoxide, respectively. The mode action of FR on fire retardation of PLA showed that the FR promoted the char formation with higher thermal stability and graphitization, and modified the decomposition path of PLA. Additionally, the PLA composites exhibited enhanced UV resistance in the UVA and UVB areas with improved UV absorbance and the UPF values improving and doubling. This work develops a new approach to preparing biodegradable FR, which simultaneously endows fire safety and anti-UV properties for PLA.

Compressible polydopamine modified pomelo peel powder/poly(ethyleneimine)/κ-carrageenan aerogel with pH-tunable charge for selective removal of anionic and cationic dyes

In this work, a novel biomass-based aerogel, polydopamine decorated pomelo peel powder/polyethyleneimine/κ-carrageenan (PPEKC) aerogel, was developed for dye wastewater treatment. The as-prepared PPEKC aerogel possessed a robust structure and good compressible resilience. As expected, this aerogel presented remarkable efficacy in eliminating both anionic and cationic dyes. The experimental maximum adsorption capacities were 2016.7 mg g-1 for congo red (CR) at pH = 5 and 1176.6 mg g-1 for methylene blue (MEB) at pH = 11, following with ultra-fast adsorption rates. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption isotherms exhibited a stronger alignment with the Langmuir isotherm model for CR at 308 K and MEB at 288, 298, 308 K. The Freundlich isotherm model yielded a suitable fit for the adsorption of CR at 288 and 298 K. Thermodynamic analyses indicated that the removal of CR and MEB was spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption mechanisms involved electrostatic interactions, π-π interactions, and hydrogen bonds. Intriguingly, it could achieve bidirectional selective adsorption of anionic and cationic dyes in the designed pH values, due to pH-tunable surface charge. Additionally, it also exhibited favorable reusability and antibacterial activity. Therefore, the as-prepared PPEKC aerogel could be a promising biosorbent for dye wastewater treatment.

Synthesis of Metal-Organic Framework-Based ZIF-8@ZIF-67 Nanocomposites for Antibiotic Decomposition and Antibacterial Activities

Toxic antibiotic effluents and antibiotic-resistant bacteria constitute a threat to global health. So, scientists are investigating high-performance materials for antibiotic decomposition and antibacterial activities. In this novel research work, we have successfully designed ZIF-8@ZIF-67 nanocomposites via sol-gel and solvothermal approaches. The ZIF-8@ZIF-67 nanocomposite is characterized by various techniques that exhibit superior surface area enhancement, charge separation, and high light absorption performance. Yet, ZIF-8 has high adsorption rates and active sites, while ZIF-67 has larger pore volume and efficient adsorption and reaction capabilities, demonstrating that the ZIF-8@ZIF-67 nanocomposite outperforms pristine ZIF-8 and ZIF-67. Compared with pristine ZIF-8 and ZIF-67, the most active 6ZIF-67@ZIF-8 nanocomposite showed higher decomposition efficacy for ciprofloxacin (65%), levofloxacin (54%), and ofloxacin (48%). Scavenger experiments confirmed that •OH, •O2-, and h+ are the most active species for the decomposition of ciprofloxacin (CIP), levofloxacin (LF), and ofloxacin (OFX), respectively. In addition, the 6ZIF-67/ZIF-8 nanocomposite suggested its potential applications in Escherichia coli for growth inhibition zone, antibacterial activity, and decreased viability. Moreover, the stability test and decomposition pathway of CIP, LF, and OFX were also proposed. Finally, our study aims to enhance the efficiency and stability of ZIF-8@ZIF-67 nanocomposite and potentially enable its applications in antibiotic decomposition, antibacterial activities, and environmental remediation.

Fe-pillared montmorillonite functionalized chitosan/gelatin foams for efficient removal of organic pollutants by integration of adsorption and Fenton degradation

A Fe-pillared montmorillonite (Fe-MMT) functionalized bio-based foam (Fe-MMT@CS/G) was developed by using chitosan (CS) and gelatin (G) as the matrix for high-efficiency elimination of organic pollutants through the integration of adsorption and Fenton degradation. The results showed that the mechanical properties of as-obtained foam were strengthened by the addition of certain amounts of Fe-MMT. Interestingly, Fe-MMT@CS/G displayed efficient adsorption ability for charged pollutants under a wide range of pH. The adsorption processes of methyl blue (MB), methylene blue (MEB) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) on Fe-MMT@CS/G were well described by the Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The maximum adsorption capacities were 2208.24 mg/g for MB, 1167.52 mg/g for MEB, and 806.31 mg/g for TCH. Electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces probably involved the adsorption process. As expected, this foam could exhibit better removal properties toward both charged and uncharged organic pollutants through the addition of H2O2 to trigger the Fenton degradation reaction. For non-adsorbable and uncharged bisphenol A (BPA), the removal efficiency was dramatically increased from 1.20 % to 92.77 % after Fenton degradation. Additionally, it presented outstanding recyclability. These results suggest that Fe-MMT@CS/G foam is a sustainable and efficient green material for the alleviation of water pollution.

Versatile CO2-responsive Sponges Decorated with ZIF-8 for Bidirectional Separation of Oil/Water and Controllable Removal of Dyes

The complex wastewater containing water-soluble dyes and water-insoluble oils has given rise to significant environmental concerns that demand urgent remediation. Herein, a novel "smart" multifunctional sponge (ZIF-8@PMS) stepwise decorated with ZIF-8 nanoparticles and CO2-responsive copolymer (poly(2-(diethylamino) ethyl methacrylate-co-3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl acrylate-co-stearyl methacrylate) was successfully prepared for CO2 controllable oil/water separation and dyes removal. The results revealed that the sponge coated with CO2-responsive copolymer for three cycles (ZIF-8@PMS-3) exhibited optimal comprehensive properties. The ZIF-8@PMS-3 had excellent compressive-resilient characteristics and chemical stability. As expected, it displayed tunable wettability and charged state under the regulation of CO2. Based on these features, ZIF-8@PMS-3 presented highly efficient removal of oil and dyes, even for the dye-containing oil/water emulsions, via a synergistic combination of adsorption and separation methods. The adsorption capacity for oil and various organic solvents ranged from 21.3 to 50 g g-1. The maximum adsorption capacities toward anionic dyes: methyl orange with 1205.89 mg g-1 and methyl blue with 880.00 mg g-1 in the presence of CO2 through electrostatic interaction. In the absence of CO2, it achieved maximum adsorption capacities for cationic dyes, including malachite green with 1246.15 mg g-1 and rhodamine B with 203 mg g-1, primarily driven by π-π interactions. According to distinct adsorption mechanisms, ZIF-8@PMS-3 could selectively adsorb either anionic or cationic dyes by exploiting CO2 as a trigger. Furthermore, the separation efficiencies for both types of oil/water emulsions surpassed 99.9%, with respective fluxes of 1566.99 L m-2 h-1 (water-in-oil emulsion) and 310.37 L m-2 h-1 (oil-in-water emulsion). Additionally, the as-prepared sponges exhibited remarkable antibacterial properties and exceptional recyclability. Therefore, the ZIF-8@PMS-3 holds substantial promise for potential applications in practical industrial wastewater treatment.

Enhancing zerovalent iron-based Fenton-like chemistry by copper sulfide: Insight into the active sites for sustainable Fe(II) supply

Zerovalent iron (ZVI)-based Fenton-like processes have been widely applied in degrading organic contaminants. However, the surface oxyhydroxide passivation layer produced during the preparation and oxidation of ZVI hinders its dissolution and Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycling, and restricts the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this study, copper sulfide (CuS) was found to effectively enhance the degradation of diverse organic pollutants in the ZVI/H₂O₂ system. Moreover, the degradation performance for the actual industrial wastewater (i.e., dinitrodiazophenol wastewater) in the ZVI/H₂O₂ system was impressively improved by 41% with CuS addition, and the COD removal efficiency could reach 97% after 2 h of treatment. Mechanism investigation revealed that the introduction of CuS accelerated the sustainable supply of Fe(II) in the ZVI/H₂O₂ system. Specifically, Cu(I) and reductive sulfur species (i.e., S^2-, S₂^2-, S_n^2- and H₂S (aq)) from CuS directly induced efficient Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycling. The iron-copper synergistic effect between Cu(II) from CuS and ZVI expedited Fe(II) generation from ZVI dissolution and Fe(III) reduction by formed Cu(I). This study not only elucidates the promotion effects of CuS on ZVI dissolution and Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycling in ZVI-based Fenton-like processes, but also provides a sustainable and high-efficiency iron-based oxidation system for removal of organic contaminants.

Metal-organic frameworks/cellulose hybrids with their modern technological implementation towards water treatment

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are amongst the most attractive porous polymeric networks with appealing properties. However, their inherent fragility, powder nature, low processibility, and handling present some exceptional challenges for high-tech commercial applications. Currently, economic and environmental concerns drive the development of some bioinspired polymeric matrices containing MOFs. As an artifact, the availability of previously unattainable properties is negotiated by conjugating cellulosic materials with crystalline MOFs. Thus, multi-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid composites are formed with high electrical, optical, mechanical, and thermal features. These MOF/cellulose hybrids, known as CelloMOFs (cellulose MOFs), have remarkable mechanical properties with tunable porosities, specific surface area and accessible active sites, making them ideal for real-world troubleshooting applications such as wastewater treatment, chemical sensing, energy storage, and so on. In this review, current state-of-the-art strategic synthesis routes for fabrication of MOF/cellulose composites with a specific focus on CelloMOFs as a potential tool for mitigation of the targeted emerging water contaminants have been done under the same umbrella, which has previously been less explored. Streamlining discussions on general properties such as raw material selection, structural analysis of cellulose, availability of surface functional groups, cellulose-metal node interactions, cellulose charging, and so on have been emphasized, as has integration with robust MOFs. A better understanding of these fundamental properties is critical because they will have a significant impact on the performance of MOF/cellulose composites in a variety of applications. Furthermore, at the end of this review, the challenges and perspectives of using CelloMOFs have been discussed in a concise manner in order to improve their practical utility rather than just concept mapping.

Highly efficient U(VI) capture from nuclear wastewater by an easily synthesized lignin-derived biochar: Adsorption performance and mechanism

The efficient recycling of uranium (U) by adsorbents remains challenging due to the strong interference from coexisting impurities, insufficient desorption efficiency, and weak irradiation instability. In this work, a novel lignin-derived biochar (AL/BC) with high surface area and abundant functional groups was developed through a green and simple pyrolysis process, and an adsorbent for U(VI) capture was used. The optimist AL/BC-600 exhibited ultrahigh adsorption capacity for U(VI) of 4007 mg/g, possessing a wide pH range of 1-11, and powerful anti-interference ability when coexisting with various common cations and anions. In addition, AL/BC-600 showed high tolerance even under strong irradiation at a dose of 350 kGy. Most importantly, after the tenth round of the adsorption-desorption cyclic utilization, the adsorption efficiency and desorption rate of AL/BC-600 were actually over 95% and 80%, respectively. Hence, this study provides a green and simple process for synthesizing a novel adsorbent for highly efficient U(VI) capture, not only paving a path for alleviating the increasingly serious energy crisis, but also facilitating the low-carbon and circular development of lignin.

Preparation and Tribological Properties of Bismaleimide Matrix Composites Reinforced with Covalent Organic Framework Coated Graphene Nanosheets

The poor compatibility between the polymer matrix and complex modification processes greatly affects the excellent tribological properties of graphene in the polymer matrix. In this study, a covalent organic framework (COF)-coated graphene hybrid lubricating filler (G/COFs) was synthesized in situ using a sample one-step mechanochemical synthesis process. This was used to improve the tribological properties of bismaleimide (BMI) resin. The morphology and microstructure of the G/COFs hybrid were characterized, and the effect of the added amount on the tribological properties of the G/COFs/BMI composites was studied. The results showed that the G/COFs hybrid could improve the stability of the friction coefficient and decrease the volume wear rate of BMI composites. Compared to the neat BMI, the 0.6 wt% G/COFs/BMI composites showed optimal tribological performance, with the friction coefficient and volume wear rate decreasing from 0.35 to 0.14 and from 48 × 10^-6 to 10.6 × 10^-6 mm³/(N‧m), respectively. In addition, the G/COFs/BMI composites showed lower friction coefficient fluctuations and volume wear rates than G/BMI composites. This is mainly attributed to the fact that the deposition of COFs can not only effectively prevent the aggregation of graphene nanosheets, but can also significantly improve the compatibility and interfacial bond between the graphene and BMI matrix. Moreover, the good synergistic effect between the lamellar COFs and graphene nanosheets can generate high-quality self-lubricating transfer films during the friction process. The excellent dispersibility, efficient chemical functionalization, better friction reduction and wear-resistance properties, and facile preparation method make graphene/COFs hybrid nanoparticles promising as an excellent lubricating filler.

CO2-responsive functional cotton fibers decorated with Ag nanoparticles for "smart" selective and enhanced dye adsorption

Novel Ag nanoparticles (NPs) decorated CO₂-responsive cotton fiber (PCCF@Ag) as eco-friendly adsorbent was prepared via in-situ growth of Ag NPs on the poly(2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate-co-4-acryloyloxybenzophenone) coated cotton fiber. The as-prepared PCCF@Ag displayed excellent adsorption performance toward both anionic and cationic dyes with or without CO₂ stimulation, even under a wide range of pH from 3 to 11. The maximum adsorption capacities of the as-prepared PCCF@Ag toward anionic dye (1538.5 mg g^-1 for MO) and cationic dyes (944.0 mg g^-1 for MEB and 415.6 mg g^-1 for NR) were satisfactory. The adsorption processes were described better by the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, respectively. Notably, upon CO₂ stimulation, the PCCF@Ag exhibited significantly enhanced adsorption capacity toward anionic dyes, following ultrafast adsorption rate, which made the PCCF@Ag could selectively adsorb anionic dyes from mixture because of greatly different adsorption rates between anionic dyes (adsorption equilibrium within 2 min) and cationic dyes (adsorption equilibrium over 12 h). Additionally, the PCCF@Ag could maintain over 91.0% of adsorption capacity even after ten cycles, indicating its outstanding reusability. Meanwhile, the as-obtained PCCF@Ag exhibited excellent antibacterial activity. Overall, the as-obtained PCCF@Ag could be considered as a promising dye scavenger for wastewater remediation.
