Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone (ZEN) are often detected in plant materials used to produce feed for pre-pubertal gilts. Daily exposure to small amounts of these mycotoxins causes subclinical conditions in pigs and affects various biological processes (e.g. mycotoxin biotransformation). The aim of this preclinical study was to evaluate the effect of low monotonic doses of DON and ZEN (12 µg/kg body weight-BW-and 40 µg/kg BW, respectively), administered alone or in combination to 36 prepubertal gilts for 42 days, on the degree of immunohistochemical expression of oestrogen receptors (ERs) in the liver and the mRNA expression of genes encoding selected liver enzymes during biotransformation processes. The level of expression of the analysed genes proves that the tested mycotoxins exhibit variable biological activity at different stages of biotransformation. The biological activity of low doses of mycotoxins determines their metabolic activity. Therefore, taking into account the impact of low doses of mycotoxins on energy-intensive processes and their endogenous metabolism, it seems that the observed situation may lead to the activation of adaptation mechanisms.

Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a highly lethal liver cancer with late diagnosis; therefore, the identification of new early biomarkers could help reduce mortality. We determine the tissue and plasma status of five annexins during hepatocarcinogenesis by diethylnitrosamine-induced cirrhosis-HCC. We found that Anxa5 was the earliest upregulated gene at week 12 after HCC initiation, while Anxa1 and Anxa2 were upregulated in advanced HCC stages (weeks 18 and 22). Furthermore, the protein level of Annexin A1, A2, A5 and A10 was increased from the early stages. Immunofluorescence and subcellular fractionation revealed Annexin A1, A2, and A5 in the cytoplasm and nuclei of tumor cells. Notably, increased plasma levels of Annexin A5 significantly (r2 = 0.8203) correlated with Annexin A5 levels in liver tissue from week 12 and gradually increased until week 22. Using the TCGA database, we found that the expression of ANXA2 (HR = 1.7, p = 0.0046) and ANXA5 (HR = 1.8, p = 0.00077) was associated with poor survival in HCC patients. In conclusion, we have identified Annexin A1 and A5 as potentially useful early biomarkers for poor prognosis in HCC patients.

Abstract
Microalgae represent a growing innovative source of nutraceuticals such as carotenoids and phenolic compound which are naturally present within these single-celled organisms or can be induced in response to specific growth conditions. The presence of the unfavourable allelic variant in genes involved in the control of oxidative stress, due to one or more SNPs in gene encoding protein involved in the regulation of redox balance, can lead to pathological conditions such as insulin resistance, which, in turn, is directly involved in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus. In this review we provide an overview of the main SNPs in antioxidant genes involved in the promotion of insulin resistance with a focus on the potential role of microalgae-derived antioxidant molecules as novel nutritional tools to mitigate oxidative stress and improve insulin sensitivity.

Abstract
Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a highly prevalent tumor that requires extensive research. Ferroptosis is a unique cell death modality driven by iron-dependent phospholipid peroxidation manifested as an accumulation of lipid-reactive oxygen species. With further understanding of noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs), numerous studies have demonstrated an important regulatory role of ncRNAs in ESCC through ferroptosis, including microRNAs, long ncRNAs, and circular RNAs. These ncRNAs influence the expression of the target gene to regulate ESCC progression by involving the ferroptosis signaling pathway. However, the specific regulatory mechanism of ncRNAs on ferroptosis in ESCC remains largely unknown. This review summarized the current knowledge on the relation between ferroptosis regulators, such as glutathione synthesis/metabolism, Keap1/Nfr2, and p53, by ncRNAs and ESCC. This review also proposed the possible therapeutic approaches for ncRNAs targeting ferroptosis in ESCC. This is the latest and most effective summary of recent research achievements of ncRNAs on ferroptosis in ESCC. These ncRNAs based on ferroptosis merit further investigation in preclinical research of ESCC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the associations between genetic polymorphisms of GSTT1, GSTM1, GSTO1, GSTP1 and MTHFR genes and the DNA damage levels of BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. METHODS Peripheral blood samples were used to measure DNA damage levels and genetic polymorphisms, and urine samples were collected to analyze arsenic metabolites in 79 arsenic-exposed workers and 24 non-arsenic-exposed workers. RESULTS The BRCA1 and BRCA2 damage levels in exposure group were significantly higher than that in control group. Significant associations were detected between GSTT1 and GSTO1 polymorphisms and DNA damage levels of BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes in subjects (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that the DNA damage levels of BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes may modulate by genetic variations of GSTT1 and GSTO1 when individuals are exposed to carcinogens, such as arsenic.
