Uncovering Nursing Communication Strategies and Relational Styles to Foster Patient Engagement in Oncology: A Scoping Review

Nurses play an active role in fostering engagement of oncological patients, and, therefore, adopting effective communication and interpersonal skills is crucial. However, the nurse-patient relationship and communication strategies are frequently undervalued. This scoping review aims to address this gap with a twofold objective: (1) to explore the existing literature to identify communication strategies and relational styles employed by nurses to promote patient engagement in non-pediatric oncology patients; (2) to assess current knowledge on this topic to determine the need for future research. The search was conducted on different scientific databases and grey literature. The review was conducted following the methodology outlined in the Joanna Briggs Institute guidance for scoping reviews and the updated version of the PRISMA-ScR Checklist. Thirteen articles were included in the study. The studies in total enrolled 863 participants. Four clusters of nursing interventions were identified, encompassing communication strategies and relational styles of varying complexity, along with ten categories of general outcomes emerging from their implementation. This study summarizes the current knowledge regarding nursing communication strategies and relational styles used to promote patient engagement in oncological patients. Further research is needed, to evaluate and integrate the researched techniques, tools, and interventions for future clinical nursing practice.

SBAR Shift Report Training Program and its Effect on Nurses' Knowledge and Practice and Their Perception of Shift Handoff Communication

Introduction: Handover is a key factor in the continuity of care and is the most vital communication means among nurses. Using an identical method for this can enhance the quality of the handover. Objective: To evaluate the effect of a shift reporting training program using the Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation tool on nurses' knowledge and practice and their perception of shift handoff communication in noncritical departments. Methods: A quasiexperimental research design. The study was held in noncritical departments on 83 staff nurses. Researcher used a knowledge questionnaire, an observation checklist, and two perception scales were used to collect data. Statistical data analysis was performed with SPSS using descriptive, chi-square or Fisher exact tests, correlation coefficient, multiple linear regression model. Results: Nurses varied in age from 22 to 45 years old, with 85.5% of them being female. After the intervention, their knowledge rose from 4.8% to 92.8% (p < .001), the adequate practice reached 100%, and their perception of the process had significant improvement (p < .001). Using multivariate analysis, the study involvement was the main significant independent positive predictor of nurses' knowledge and scores, and these latter were positive predictors of their perception. Conclusion: Using the shift work reporting method had a significant effect among the study participants using Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation tool and improved their knowledge, practice and perception of shift handoff communication.

Systematic Review of Quality Improvement Projects Related to Intershift Nursing Handover

BACKGROUND

Nursing handover is a real-time process in which patient-specific information is passed between nurses to ensure the continuity and safety of patient care.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of quality improvement (QI) projects in improving the intershift nursing handover process.

METHODS

A computerized search was performed of electronic databases for articles published during 2009-2019 in English or Korean for which the full texts were available. The included studies involved QI projects, handover between nurses, and intershift handover. The QI-MQCS (Quality Improvement Minimum Quality Criteria Set) was used to appraise the quality of QI strategies.

RESULTS

The handover methods used in the 22 QI projects could be broadly divided into 2 types: (1) using a standardized communication tool; and (2) involving patient-participation bedside handover.

CONCLUSIONS

The published research on intershift handover-related QI projects employed standardized communication tools and the patient-participation bedside handover method to reduce adverse events and handover times and increase the satisfaction of patients and nurses. Future studies should measure the changes in patient safety-related outcomes.

Health Disparities: Impact of Health Disparities and Treatment Decision-Making Biases on Cancer Adverse Effects Among Black Cancer Survivors

BACKGROUND

Health disparities affect cancer incidence, treatment decisions, and adverse effects. Oncology providers may hold biases in the decision-making process, which can perpetuate health disparities.

OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this article is to describe health disparities across treatment decisions and adverse effects, describe decision-making biases, and provide suggestions for nurses to mitigate adverse outcomes.

METHODS

A scoping review of the literature was conducted.

FINDINGS

Factors affecting health disparities stem, in part, from structural racism and decision-making biases, such as implicit bias, which occurs when individuals have unconscious negative thoughts or feelings toward a particular group. Other decision-making biases, seemingly unrelated to race, include default bias, delay discounting bias, and availability bias. Nurses and nurse navigators can mitigate health disparities by providing culturally appropriate care, assessing health literacy, providing education regarding adverse effects, serving as patient advocates, empowering patients, evaluating personal level of disease knowledge, and monitoring and managing cancer treatment adverse effects.
