Abstract
Burnout has negative consequences for the well-being of healthcare professionals and for the safety of patients. The prevalence of burnout varies among health professions and practice settings and across studies. Consequently, this cross-sectional study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with burnout among community pharmacists in the Qassim region, Saudi Arabia. The study used the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) to assess the burnout. The CBI consists of three scales, including personal burnout, work-related burnout, and client-related burnout. A total of 226 community pharmacists participated in the study. Of these, 63.72% were male, and 44.25% had experience of 1-5 years as community pharmacists. The prevalence of personal burnout was 83.63%, while the prevalence of work-related burnout was 83.19%, and the prevalence of client-related burnout was 76.11%. The prevalence of burnout was higher among younger age, early-career pharmacists; staff pharmacists; pharmacists working ≥6 days per week; and those working in pharmacies with fewer pharmacy teams. Multivariable logistic regression showed that compared to five workdays, working six and seven days per week was an independent risk factor for developing personal burnout [(adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 3.60: CI = (1.29-10.05), p = 0.014) and (aOR = 4.72: CI = (1.17-19.08), p = 0.030), respectively]. Similarly, pharmacists working in pharmacies with one or two pharmacists were at higher odds of developing personal burnout compared to others working in a larger team (aOR = 3.41: CI = (1.09-10.66), p = 0.035). For work-related burnout, working six and seven days per week was also an independent risk factor [(aOR = 5.78: CI = (1.96-17.06), p = 0.001), and (aOR = 8.38: CI = (1.99-35.27), p = 0.004, respectively)]. For client-related burnout, staff pharmacists were at higher odds of developing client-related burnout compared to pharmacy managers [(aOR = 2.28: CI = (1.01-5.14), p = 0.046)]. Overall, the prevalence of burnout is alarmingly high among community pharmacists in Saudi Arabia. Consequently, it is crucial to urgently address it through robust initiatives, strategies, and interventions that support the well-being, quality of life, and resilience of community pharmacists.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the mental, emotional, and physical health of healthcare professionals around the world. Despite research efforts to examine the experiences of physicians, nurses, and other professionals in healthcare, little has been shared about the experiences of pharmacists during the pandemic. A review of current evidence is needed to better understand the mental health experiences of pharmacists during the pandemic. This review aimed to understand the perceptions, experiences, and impacts on the mental, emotional, and psychological well-being of practicing pharmacists during the COVID-19 pandemic. A review of the literature was carried out by searching several electronic databases, which included Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, PubMed, DOAJ, JSTOR, PsycINFO, the ERIC Database (via EBSCOhost), and Academic Search Complete for studies published between 2020 and 2022. The search was conducted from September 10, 2022, to November 18, 2022, using Boolean operations and the following terms: Kansas, pharmacist, pharmacy, mental health, psychology, burnout, and well-being. Nine studies exploring the lived experiences of practicing pharmacists worldwide during the COVID-19 pandemic were included in this review. The literature surveyed includes three international studies, five national (USA) studies, one study from the Midwestern region of the USA, and one study from Kansas specifically. These studies revealed increased burnout prevalence, mental health distress, feelings of negativity related to the job, and an overall lack of wellness among pharmacists across the world during the pandemic. There is limited research on the perspectives and experiences of practicing pharmacists during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additional research is necessary to thoroughly understand pharmacists' experiences and how to further support their well-being.

Abstract
Background COVID-19 has profoundly affected pharmacists, causing burnout from heavier workloads, personal stressors, and disrupted healthcare delivery. Research on pharmacists' mental health during the pandemic, especially in rural areas like Kansas, remains limited. Objectives This study aimed to understand perceptions, experiences, and impacts on the mental, emotional, and psychological well-being of active Kansas pharmacists during the COVID-19 pandemic, including evaluating workplace modifications on mental health. Methods Kansas licensed pharmacists were recruited via email distributions through five Kansas pharmacy organizations and informal referrals among colleagues. After consenting, respondents completed a 15-minute, 28-question survey via Qualtrics. The survey included 11 questions concerning demographics and employment characteristics, along with 17 questions designed to assess the impact of COVID-19 on mental health, structured according to existing literature. Participation was uncompensated, and incomplete surveys were omitted from the analysis. Results One hundred and seven respondents (83.59% completion) represented 3.25% of Kansas's 3,290 pharmacists. They were aged 26-66 (M=38.7), the majority female (72.57%) and white (84.84%), with 14.24 years average practice duration (SD=10.94). Data covered 12 rural and 11 urban counties, with 50.91% staff pharmacists and 22.73% pharmacy managers. Many worked over 40 hours weekly in 13 settings. Findings showed increased workload (24.68%), medication shortages (24.03%), and burnout (24.32%) affecting job considerations. Workplace changes impacted personal mental health, with the main stressors being work-related factors (19.21%), social distancing (18.95%), and health concerns (12.63%). Conclusion This study underscores the pandemic's profound toll on Kansas pharmacists' mental, emotional, and physical health, leading to burnout, job dissatisfaction, and decreased effectiveness. It emphasizes the urgency of organizational interventions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine adjunct pharmacist preceptor perceptions of their precepting role related to three domains: motivation to precept, understanding the precepting role, and support for precepting. METHODS An online cross-sectional survey of 2429 adjunct preceptors for four schools of pharmacy was conducted. Participants ranked their agreement with 81 statements regarding the three domains, including eleven subdomains. RESULTS Mean scores for the three domains were slightly below the positive response level, with lower scores found for the subdomains of workload, precepting norms, and extrinsic benefits/rewards. Individual statements indicated increased workload due to precepting, need for more preceptor recognition and appreciation, perceptions that precepting was stressful or draining, and a preference for one concurrent learner. More frequent need for extra coaching for APPE students negatively impacted all domains, including nine subdomains. CONCLUSION This study provides a formal evaluation of adjunct preceptor perceptions of their precepting role. Compared to previous studies, these results may indicate lower satisfaction with precepting, suggesting opportunities exist to improve the adjunct precepting experience. Actions by schools/colleges of pharmacy are necessary to ensure experiential education capacity including addressing workload concerns, increasing preceptor recognition and appreciation, and supporting preceptors when students need extra coaching.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this narrative review is to summarize the literature on well-being and burnout among community pharmacists in the U.S. and provide recommendations for future research. METHODS Relevant literature was identified by searching PubMed for combinations of keywords such as "burnout" and "well-being" combined with "pharmacists." Titles and abstracts were reviewed for relevancy, and full text articles were reviewed when applicable. RESULTS While burnout is defined by its 3 core symptoms of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and low personal accomplishment, well-being is more challenging to define and measure, which has led to it being less studied. Community pharmacists faced high rates of burnout, low quality of life (QOL), and extreme fatigue prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, a situation that has likely only worsened. Factors such as workload, the type of community pharmacy, the level of education or training of the pharmacist, and stress may be some of the contributors to high rates of burnout. Clinician burnout may be related to high rates of mental health disorders seen in pharmacists, may impact patient safety and satisfaction, and may affect productivity and costs to employers and the healthcare system overall. There has been no research into interventions or strategies to support well-being and reduce burnout among community pharmacists, but having a workplace that is perceived as supporting well-being may have some impact. Recommendations for future research include the following: (1) define well-being, (2) explore why various factors support well-being or contribute to burnout, (3) determine the impact of community pharmacists experiencing well-being or burnout, and (4) develop strategies to support well-being and reduce burnout that are specific to community pharmacy. CONCLUSION There is a sparsity of evidence regarding community pharmacist well-being and burnout. Further research is needed to generate the evidence needed to support interventions that are specific to the unique work setting of community pharmacists.

Abstract
AIM The current study compared preparation time, errors, satisfaction, and preference for a prefilled syringe (PFS) versus two RSV vaccines requiring reconstitution (VRR1 and VRR2) in a randomized, single-blinded time and motion study. METHODS Pharmacists, nurses, and pharmacy technicians were randomized to a preparation sequence of the three vaccines. Participants read instructions, then consecutively prepared the three vaccines with a 3-5-min washout period in between. Preparations were video recorded and reviewed by a trained pharmacist for preparation time and errors using predefined, vaccine-specific checklists. Participant demographics, satisfaction with vaccine preparation, and vaccine preference were recorded. Within-subjects analysis of variance was used to compare preparation time. Mixed-effects Poisson and ordered logistic regression models were used to compare the number of preparation errors and satisfaction scores, respectively. RESULTS Sixty-three pharmacists (60%), nurses (35%), and pharmacy technicians (5%) participated at four sites in the United States. The least squares mean preparation time per dose for PFS was 141.8 s (95% CI = 156.8-126.7; p <.0001) faster than for VRR1, 103.6 s (95% CI = 118.7-88.5; p <.0001) faster than for VRR2, and 122.7 s (95% CI = 134.2-111.2; p <.0001) faster than the pooled VRRs. Overall satisfaction (combined "Very" and "Extremely") was 87.3% for PFS, 28.6% for VRR1, and 47.6% for VRR2. Most participants (81.0%) preferred the PFS vaccine. LIMITATIONS The study is limited by the inability to completely blind observers. To minimize the effects of order, we utilized a 3-sequence block design; however, the order in which the vaccines were prepared may have affected outcomes. Participants were assessed once, whereas if repeated preparations were performed there may have been trained efficiencies gained for each vaccine. CONCLUSION PFS vaccines can greatly simplify the vaccine preparation process, allowing administrators to prepare almost four times more doses per hour than with vial and syringe systems.

Abstract
Background Pharmacists have experienced declines in psychological health and wellbeing post-pandemic. The phenomena of moral distress, disengagement and burnout are associated with workforce attrition, unfitness to practice and inferior quality of patient care. A working group of the Canadian Pharmacists Association (CPhA) was formed to identify resources and interventions (R&I) for occupational psychological health and wellbeing. Objective To characterize R&I from an evidence-based national health worker 'burnout' Toolkit with potential to support the pharmacy workforce. Methods All R&I included within a draft 'burnout' Toolkit from the Canadian Health Workforce Network (CHWN) were screened to determine relevancy and usefulness for the pharmacy workforce. R&I with higher grades were data-charted to capture information on topic and content delivery. Final R&I were determined through consensus meetings where 'highly rated' R&I were discussed and selected. Results Of 140 original CHWN Toolkit R&I, 53 (37.8%) were of potential relevance or usefulness to improve well-being for most in the pharmacy workforce. Of those 53 R&I, 28 (20% of original) were final selections. The majority of R&I at each stage were focused on 'preventing burnout' and 'promoting mental health' (>60%) rather than 'addressing burnout', 'supporting recovery' or managing specific issues in the workplace (i.e. stigma, discrimination, bullying, hostility, workload). No R&I were specifically developed or studied within the pharmacy workforce. Conclusions Health professions may benefit from the CHWN Toolkit and the knowledge translation activity described here. R&I relevant and useful to the pharmacy workforce generally require adaptation for dissemination and/or implementation. The set of final R&I form the basis for orchestrated plans to support the pharmacy workforce with respect to psychological health and wellbeing. There is a relative lack of R&I devoted to addressing and recovering from burnout and workload management issues.

Abstract
PURPOSE The COVID-19 pandemic has had deleterious effects on oncologist professional and personal well-being, the optimal delivery of quality cancer care, and the future cancer care workforce, with many departing the field. Hence, the identification of evidence-based approaches to sustain oncologists is essential to promote well-being. MATERIALS AND METHODS We developed a brief, oncologist-centered, virtual group peer support program and tested its feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary impact on well-being. Trained facilitators provided support to peers on the basis of burnout research in oncology with available resources to enhance oncologist resilience. Peers completed pre- and postsurvey assessment of well-being and satisfaction. RESULTS From April to May 2022, 11 of 15 (73%) oncologists participated in its entirety: mean age 51.1 years (range, 33-70), 55% female, 81.8% Ca, 82% medical oncologists, 63.6% trained ≥15 years, average 30.3 patients/wk (range, 5-60), and 90.9% employed in hospital/health system practice. There was a statistically significant difference in pre- and postintervention well-being (7.0 ± 3.6 v 8.2 ± 3.0, P = .03) with high satisfaction with postgroup experience (9.1 ± 2.5). These quantitative improvements were affirmed by qualitative feedback. These themes included (1) an enhanced understanding of burnout in oncology, (2) shared experience in practice of oncology, and (3) fostering connections with diverse colleagues. Future recommendations proposed included (1) restructuring group format and (2) tailoring groups according to practice setting (academic v community). CONCLUSION Preliminary results suggest that a brief, innovative oncologist-tailored group peer support program is feasible, acceptable, and beneficial for enhancing well-being dimensions including burnout, engagement, and satisfaction. Additional study is required to refine program components (optimal timing, format) to support oncologist well-being, now during the pandemic and well into recovery.

Abstract
Joy in medicine, or the loss of it, is a popular topic of conversation, even more so since the pandemic. Burnout in oncology is common and diminishes the satisfaction of practicing medicine. One of the challenges clinicians face is the way in which modern clinical practice takes us away from what we find most meaningful in our work: time with patients. Strategies like being kind, expressing gratitude, and using effective communication skills can establish more connection with our colleagues and our patients, and, in turn, result in a more joyful work environment. Creating space for more moments of feeling deep interconnectedness with patients and colleagues can rekindle feelings of joy in oncology practice. This article reviews the concepts of joy in medicine, the term sacred moments, and outlines practical strategies and communication skills that are effective in enhancing the patient-provider relationship.

Abstract
PURPOSE Moral distress (MD) is the result of barriers or constraints that prevent providers from carrying out what they believe to be ethically appropriate care. This study was initiated to explore associations between MD, burnout, and the organizational climate (OC) for oncology physician assistants (PAs). METHODS A national survey of oncology PAs was conducted to explore the associations between MD, OC, and burnout. The Nurse Practitioner-Primary Care OC Questionnaire was revised for oncology PAs to assess OC for PA practice. MD and burnout were assessed using the Measure of MD-Healthcare Professionals (MMD-HP) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory. RESULTS One hundred forty-six oncology PAs are included in the analysis. PAs were mostly female (90%), White/Caucasian (84%), married/partnered (78%), and in medical oncology (73%), with mean age 41.0 years. The mean MMD-HP score for oncology PAs was 71.5 and there was no difference in MD scores on the basis of oncology subspecialty, practice setting, practice type, or hours worked per week. PAs currently considering leaving their position because of MD had significantly higher mean scores on the MMD-HP compared with those not considering leaving their position (108.2 v 64.8; P = .001). PAs with burnout also had significantly higher mean scores for MD compared with PAs without burnout (97.6 v 54.3; P < .001). A negative relationship between OC for PA practice and MD was only found for the PA-administration relations subscale, whereas all subscales were negatively associated with burnout. CONCLUSION This study demonstrates that the risk of professional burnout increases significantly with increasing levels of MD. Additional research exploring the relationship between MD and burnout is needed.

Abstract
Healthcare workers have been under a great deal of stress and have been experiencing burnout throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Among these, healthcare workers are pharmacists who have been instrumental in the fight against the pandemic. This scoping review examined the impact of the pandemic on pharmacists' mental health and their antecedents using three databases (CINAHL, MEDLINE, and PsycINFO). Eligible studies included primary research articles that examined the mental health antecedents and outcomes among pharmacists during the first two years of the pandemic. We used the Social Ecological Model to categorize antecedents per outcome. The initial search yielded 4165 articles, and 23 met the criteria. The scoping review identified pharmacists experiencing poor mental health during the pandemic, including anxiety, burnout, depression, and job stress. In addition, several individual, interpersonal, organizational, community, and policy-level antecedents were identified. As this review revealed a general decline in pharmacists' mental health during the pandemic, further research is required to understand the long-term impacts of the pandemic on pharmacists. Furthermore, we recommend practical mitigation strategies to improve pharmacists' mental health, such as implementing crisis/pandemic preparedness protocols and leadership training to foster a better workplace culture.

Abstract
PURPOSE No single pharmacy in an urban zip code is consistently the least expensive across medications. If medication prices change differently across pharmacies, patients and clinicians will face challenges accessing affordable medications when refilling medications. This is especially pertinent to people with cancer with multiple fills of supportive care medications over time. We evaluated if the lowest-priced pharmacy for a formulation remains the lowest-priced over time. METHODS We compiled generic medications used to manage nausea/vomiting (14 formulations) and anorexia/cachexia (12 formulations). We extracted discounted prices in October 2021 and again in March 2022 for a typical fill at 8 pharmacies in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA (zip code 55,414) using GoodRx.com. We examined how prices changed across formulations and pharmacies over time. RESULTS Data were available for all 208 possible pharmacy-formulation combinations (8 pharmacies × 26 formulations). For 172 (83%) of the 208 pharmacy-formulation combinations, the March 2022 price was within 20% of the October 2021 price. Across pharmacy-formulation combinations, the price change over time ranged from - 76 to + 292%. For 12 (46%) of the 26 formulations, at least one pharmacy with the lowest price in October 2021 no longer was the least costly in March 2022. For one formulation (dronabinol tablets), the least expensive pharmacy became the most expensive, with an absolute and relative price increase of a fill of $22 and 85%. CONCLUSION For almost half of formulations studied, at least one pharmacy with the lowest price was no longer the least costly a few months later. The lowest price for a formulation (across pharmacies) could also change considerably. Thus, even if a patient accesses the least expensive pharmacy for a medication, they may need to re-check prices across all pharmacies with each subsequent fill to access the lowest prices. In addition to safety concerns, directing medications to and accessing medications at multiple pharmacies can add time and logistic toxicity to patients with cancer, their care partners, prescribers, and pharmacy teams.

Abstract
Objective: The primary objective was to assess presence of community-based pharmacist practitioner burnout and workplace stress through administration of validated tools. Methods: Pharmacists licensed in Ohio received an invitation to participate in the anonymous online assessment via Qualtrics™ using emails available via the State Board of Pharmacy listserv. The survey assessed emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment using a validated tool, the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). The Areas of Worklife Survey (AWS) was used to assess stressors as they relate to burnout and job stress. This study was approved by The Ohio State University Institutional Review Board. Results: There were 1,425 complete responses. Based on the study sample, 67.2% of community-based pharmacists are experiencing burnout. When asked to self-identify workplace stressors, respondents primarily described the Workload, Control, and Reward dimensions of the AWS. The most commonly reported coping mechanisms were self-care strategies (28.4%), mindfulness (17.6%), and personal time/time off (15.3%). Respondents suggested that organizations address staffing (50.2%) and development of a culture of well-being (17.2%) to promote well-being. Conclusion: This study allowed insight into workplace stressors for community-based pharmacists and strategies organizations can employ to improve their well-being. Future studies are needed to assess the efficacy of these interventions.

Abstract
This study applied a hermeneutic phenomenological approach to better understand pharmacy workplace wellbeing and resilience using respondents' written comments along with a blend of the researchers' understanding of the phenomenon and the published literature. Our goal was to apply this understanding to recommendations for the pharmacy workforce and corresponding future research. Data were obtained from the 2021 APhA/NASPA National State-Based Pharmacy Workplace Survey, launched in the United States in April 2021. Promotion of the online survey to pharmacy personnel was accomplished through social media, email, and online periodicals. Responses continued to be received through the end of 2021. A data file containing 6973 responses was downloaded on 7 January 2022 for analysis. Usable responses were from those who wrote an in-depth comment detailing stories and experiences related to pharmacy workplace and resilience. There were 614 respondents who wrote such comments. The findings revealed that business models driven by mechanized assembly line processes, business metrics that supersede patient outcomes, and reduction of pharmacy personnel's professional judgement have contributed to the decline in the experience of providing patient care in today's health systems. The portrait of respondents' lived experiences regarding pharmacy workplace wellbeing and resilience was beyond the individual level and revealed the need for systems change. We propose several areas for expanded inquiry in this domain: (1) shared trauma, (2) professional responsibility and autonomy, (3) learned subjection, (4) moral injury and moral distress, (5) sociocultural effects, and (6) health systems change.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Patients on oral oncolytics are responsible for self-monitoring adherence and adverse drug reactions (ADRs). Oncology pharmacists are in position to focus on quality and safety of care for patients on oncolytics while providing communication between the patient, physician, and specialty pharmacies. This pilot aimed to monitor patients treated by our leukemia team initiated on oral oncolytics. METHODS From July 2020 to February 2021, patients treated by our leukemia team newly started on oncolytics were included. Pharmacists performed medication reconciliation and drug interaction screening on initiation of oral oncolytic. Pharmacists followed up at predefined intervals. On follow up adherence was assessed using the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-8 (MMAS-8) and patient reported outcomes (PROs) were assessed using the revised Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS-r). After each follow-up, a note was placed in the chart with assessment scores and recommendations. RESULTS A total of 32 patients were screened with 19 patients included. Oral oncolytics included: imatinib (4), dasatinib (5), ponatinib (1), gilteritinib (2), enasidenib (1), and venetoclax (6). Fourteen drug interactions were identified, 11 medications discontinued, nine medications added, and two medications doses were changed. Twenty-six adherence assessments were performed with 21, 4, and 1 assessment demonstrating adherence, medium adherence, and low adherence, respectively. 62 ESAS-r assessments were performed with 64% reported as no symptoms, 17% as mild, 13% as moderate, and 5% as severe symptoms. Twenty laboratory tests were ordered from pharmacist recommendation on initiation and follow-up. CONCLUSION This pilot demonstrated the role pharmacists play in oral oncolytic monitoring and symptom management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Solid organ transplant (SOT) pharmacist burnout and well-being has not been described. METHODS A survey of SOT pharmacists was distributed to transplant pharmacy organization listervs. Burnout was assessed with the full 22 item Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel (MBI-HSS-MP) and well-being was assessed with the Mayo Well-Being Index (WBI). Logistic multivariate regression was constructed to identify risk factors for a composite burnout assessment. RESULTS In total, 230 responses were included (estimated response rate 36.2%). Survey participants were predominantly Caucasian (80.4%), female (79.1%), married/partnered (67.4%), and were within the first 5 years of practice (32.2%) as clinical pharmacist/specialists (87%). According to the MBI-HSS-MP, 63% met criteria for burnout. Comparing the groups with or without burnout, low quality of life (40.4% vs 9.5%; p<0.001), extreme fatigue (52.1% vs 19%; p<0.001), and likelihood of leaving the job for reasons other than retirement (38.5% vs 10.7%; p<0.001) were more common. The incidence of SOT pharmacists with WBI scores ≥ 5 (decreased well-being) was 26.5%. Among clinical pharmacists, risk factors for burnout included > 10 hours per week of clinical duties outside of transplant (OR 2.669, p = 0.021) and extreme fatigue (OR 3.473, p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS Pharmacist burnout in SOT practice was similar to that reported in various pharmacy specialties (53-61%), which impacts clinical workforce retention and personal well-being.
