Behavioral determinants for vaccine acceptability among rurally located college students

Background: College-aged adults in a rural and medically-underserved area often struggle to receive proper vaccinations due to lower socioeconomic status coupled with life demands. Objectives: The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) was used as the theoretical basis to explore behavioral determinants associated with vaccination uptake in the population. Methods: This study used a questionnaire distributed to college students (n = 208) located in a rural area to assess the effects of social and behavioral factors on vaccination uptake. Results: Attitudes and normative beliefs towards vaccination uptake were positive but were largely impacted by work demands. Perceived behavioral control did not contribute towards the intent to receive necessary vaccines. Conclusions: Researchers conducting vaccination interventions, along with physician-patient communication, need to target attitudes and subjective norms in rural and medically underserved communities to increase vaccines, particularly HPV. In addition, results showed that promoting vaccine uptake among minorities is necessary to aid in vaccine acceptability in these communities.

The relationship between cognitive function and non-prescribed therapy use in older adults

OBJECTIVES

To examine the association of cognitive function with use of non-prescribed therapies for managing acute and chronic conditions, and to determine whether use of non-prescribed therapies changes over time in relation to baseline cognitive function.

METHODS

200 community-dwelling adults aged 65 and older were recruited from three counties in south central North Carolina. Repeated measures of daily symptoms and treatment were collected on three consecutive days at intervals of at least one month. The Mini-Mental State Examination, the primary cognitive measure, was collected as part of the baseline survey. Data were collected on the daily use of common non-prescribed therapies (use of prayer, ignore symptoms, over-the-counter remedies, food and beverage therapies, home remedies, and vitamin, herb, or supplements) on each of the three days of the follow-up interviews for up to six consecutive months.

RESULTS

Older adults with poorer cognitive function were more likely to pray and ignore symptoms on days that they experienced acute symptoms. Poorer cognitive function was associated with increased use of home remedies for treating symptoms related to existing chronic conditions.

CONCLUSIONS

Cognitive function may play a role in why older patients use some non-prescribed therapies in response to acute and chronic conditions.

Depressive symptomatology among Turkish older adults with low incomes in a rural community sample

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

To identify the characteristics that are associated with depressive symptomatology among Turkish older adults with low income.

BACKGROUND

Depression is a major threat to mental health in older people, but little is known about older adults with low income at risk for depressive symptomatology in Turkey.

DESIGN

This was a cross-sectional study, based in one area of Istanbul.

METHODS

The sample included 132 older adults in a rural setting living in Istanbul, Turkey. The participants were 55 years of age or older and chosen from among older adults with low income. Data were collected through a structured interview conducted in the homes of the participants.

RESULTS

High depressive symptoms (Geriatric Depression Scale > or =11) were reported by 50% of the participants. Compared with non-depressed individuals, those with depressive symptomatology were more likely to be women, widowed, lack health insurance and to live alone. Depressed participants significantly more often reported chronic health conditions compared to non-depressed participants (OR = 4.11, 95% CI = 1.35, 12.57). Overall well-being scores were significantly higher in men and in the non-depressed group. The result of the Pearson correlation provided support for the association between depression scores and overall well-being scores (r = -0.60).

CONCLUSIONS

Depressive symptomatology is prevalent within Turkish older adults with low income. Further research is needed to examine potential risk factors associated with depressive symptomatology for this population.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

Findings may assist health care professionals in assessing high-risk older people who could benefit from interventions aimed at minimizing depressive symptoms.
