Natural Polymers as Carriers for Encapsulation of Volatile Oils: Applications and Perspectives in Food Products

The technique of encapsulating different materials into matrices that can both protect and release their contents under specific circumstances is known as encapsulation. It serves the primary function of shielding delicate components from outside influences, including heat, light, and humidity. This can be accomplished by a variety of procedures that, depending on the method and materials selected, result in the creation of particles with various structures. The materials used for encapsulation in food applications must be of high quality, acceptable for human consumption, and stable during processing and storage. The most suitable natural polymers for food applications are carbohydrates, proteins, or mixtures thereof. Volatile oils are end products of plant metabolism, accumulated and stored in various plant organs, cells, or secretory tissues. These are natural and are characterized by the scent of the aromatic plants they come from. Because of their antibacterial and antioxidant qualities, they are being utilized more and more in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Since volatile oils are highly sensitive to environmental changes, they must be stored under specific conditions after being extracted from a variety of plant sources. A promising method for increasing the applicability of volatile oils is their encapsulation into colloidal particles by natural polymers such as carbohydrates and proteins. Encapsulation hides the unfavorable taste of nutrients while shielding delicate dietary ingredients from the effects of heat, moisture, oxygen, and pH. This technique results in improved stability for volatile oils that are often sensitive to environmental factors and offers the possibility of using them in an aqueous system even if they are insoluble in water. This paper aims to provide an overview of the current advances in volatile oil encapsulation technologies and presents a variety of natural polymers used in the food industry for encapsulation. Also, a distinct section is created to highlight the current advances in dairy products enriched with encapsulated volatile oils.

Janus Self-Propelled Chitosan-Based Hydrogel Spheres for Rapid Bleeding Control

Uncontrolled hemorrhage is a major cause of potentially preventable death in civilian trauma nowadays. Considerable concern has been given to the development of efficient hemostats with high blood absorption, self-propelled property, and Ca²⁺ release ability, for irregularly shaped and noncompressible hemorrhage. Herein, Janus self-propelled chitosan-based hydrogel with CaCO₃ (J-CMH@CaCO₃ ) is developed by partial ionic crosslinking of carboxylated chitosan (CCS) and Ca²⁺ , gravity settlement, and photopolymerization, followed by removing the shell of CCS. The obtained J-CMH@CaCO₃ is further used as a hemostat powered by the internal CaCO₃ and coordinated protonated tranexamic acid (J-CMH@CaCO₃ /T). Bubbles are generated and detached to provide the driving force, accompanied by the release of Ca²⁺ . The two aspects work in synergy to accelerate clot formation, endowing the J-CMH@CaCO₃ /T with excellent hemostatic efficiency. The J-CMH@CaCO₃ /T presents high blood absorption, favorable blood-clotting ability, desired erythrocyte and platelet aggregation, and acceptable hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility. In rodent and rabbit bleeding models, the J-CMH@CaCO₃ /T exhibits the most effective hemostasis to the best knowledge of the authors, wherein the hemorrhage is rapidly halted within 39 s. It is believed that the J-CMH@CaCO₃ /T with self-propelled property opens up a new avenue to design high-performance hemostats for clinical application.

Electrohydrodynamic atomization: A two-decade effort to produce and process micro-/nanoparticulate materials

Electrohydrodynamic atomization (EHDA), also called electrospray technique, has been studied for more than one century. However, since 1990s it has begun to be used to produce and process micro-/nanostructured materials. Owing to the simplicity and flexibility in EHDA experimental setup, it has been successfully employed to generate particulate materials with controllable compositions, structures, sizes, morphologies, and shapes. EHDA has also been used to deposit micro- and nanoparticulate materials on surfaces in a well-controlled manner. All these attributes make EHDA a fascinating tool for preparing and assembling a wide range of micro- and nanostructured materials which have been exploited for use in pharmaceutics, food, and healthcare to name a few. Our goal is to review this field, which allows scientists and engineers to learn about the EHDA technique and how it might be used to create, process, and assemble micro-/nanoparticulate materials with unique and intriguing properties. We begin with a brief introduction to the mechanism and setup of EHDA technique. We then discuss issues critical to successful application of EHDA technique, including control of composition, size, shape, morphology, structure of particulate materials and their assembly. We also illustrate a few of the many potential applications of particulate materials, especially in the area of drug delivery and regenerative medicine. Next, we review the simulation and modeling of Taylor cone-jet formation for a single and co-axial nozzle. The mathematical modeling of particle transport and deposition is presented to provide a deeper understanding of the effective parameters in the preparation, collection and pattering processes. We conclude this article with a discussion on perspectives and future possibilities in this field.

Chitosan microparticles loaded with yeast-derived PCV2 virus-like particles elicit antigen-specific cellular immune response in mice after oral administration

BACKGROUND

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2)-associated diseases are a major problem for the swine industry worldwide. In addition to improved management and husbandry practices, the availability of several anti-PCV2 vaccines provides an efficient immunological option for reducing the impact of these diseases. Most anti-PCV2 vaccines are marketed as injectable formulations. Although these are effective, there are problems associated with the use of injectable products, including laborious and time-consuming procedures, the induction of inflammatory responses at the injection site, and treatment-associated stress to the animals. Oral vaccines represent an improvement in antigen delivery technology; they overcome the problems associated with injection management and facilitate antigen boosting when an animals' immunity falls outside the protective window.

METHODS

Chitosan microparticles were used as both a vehicle and mucosal adjuvant to deliver yeast-derived PCV2 virus-like particles (VLPs) in an attempt to develop an oral vaccine. The physical characteristics of the microparticles, including size, Zeta potential, and polydispersity, were examined along with the potential to induce PCV2-specific cellular immune responses in mice after oral delivery.

RESULTS

Feeding mice with PCV2 VLP-loaded, positively-charged chitosan microparticles with an average size of 2.5 μm induced the proliferation of PCV2-specific splenic CD4+/CD8+ lymphocytes and the subsequent production of IFN-γ to levels comparable with those induced by an injectable commercial formulation.

CONCLUSION

Chitosan microparticles appear to be a safe, simple system on which to base PCV2 oral vaccines. Oral chitosan-mediated antigen delivery is a novel strategy that efficiently induces anti-PCV2 cellular responses in a mouse model. Further studies in swine are warranted.
