Retroperitoneal lymphangioma in a pregnant patient: A case report and literature review

This case report describes the management of a woman diagnosed with a retroperitoneal cystic tumor during pregnancy. The 29-year-old patient presented at 29 weeks of pregnancy with abdominal pain. A retroperitoneal tumor measuring 224 × 156 × 235 mm was identified on ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging. The patient underwent cesarean section delivery of a healthy neonate at 37 weeks. Uncomplicated laparoscopic surgery was performed during the postpartum period, resulting in a histologic diagnosis of a retroperitoneal lymphangioma. A review of articles published between 2003 and 2023 on the diagnosis, management, and prognosis of gestational lymphangiomas was conducted using the PubMed, SCOPUS and SpringerLink databases. Ten articles, including case reports of lymphangiomas diagnosed during pregnancy, were identified. The most frequent location was the gastrointestinal tract, with no cases reported in the retroperitoneal area. A good perinatal outcome was reported in the majority of cases. Lymphangiomas are rare benign tumors that are even more uncommon during pregnancy. Watchful waiting can offer a good obstetric and perinatal prognosis.

Benign idiopathic retroperitoneal cyst: A case series of three patients

IMPORTANCE

Retroperitoneal cysts are a rare entity in the field of surgery and their management remains a clinical dilemma for many surgeons. This study addresses the clinical management of three benign retroperitoneal cysts which were presented in our hospital.

OBJECTIVES

The objective of this case series is to explore the different clinical presentation of the retroperitoneal cyst (RPC). This study also aims at different tools of investigations especially role of CT scan in the diagnosis of RPC and finally the different treatment options available for RPC.

METHODS

This is a single centered case series of three retroperitoneal cysts which were presented in surgical department of our hospital in the year 2016 and 2017. Total three patients were presented in this case series, two of them were females and one was male. Females were 13 years and 23 years age-old, male was 45 years old. Two of them admitted through the Outdoor Patient Clinic and one was presented to the surgical emergency. Informed consent from the patients and guardian (case1) has been taken. Research work has been reported in line with the PROCESS criteria.

RESULTS

They were investigated and treated in our hospital. Two of them were diagnosed with retroperitoneal cysts preoperatively and one was diagnosed pre-operatively. In all three cases, surgery had been carried out and they had been observed in their early postoperative period and then followed up for two years. All biopsies had been followed and turned out to be benign idiopathic cysts. These patients have been followed up for 2 years after completion of their treatment.

CONCLUSION

Retroperitoneal cysts in adults are an uncommon manifestation of abdominal pathology. Their presentation is quite vague. The rarity catches the surgeon off guard at times. Radiology plays a crucial role in defining these lesions and complete surgical excision remains the cornerstone of treatment for symptomatic and complicated patients.

Giant Retroperitoneal Lymphangioma: a Rare Entity

Retroperitoneal lymphangiomas are rare benign tumors, and the exact incidence of which is not well known. They usually arise from the developmental abnormalities of retroperitoneal lymphatics or their traumatic rupture. Confusion with other cystic tumors of the retroperitoneum including those arising from the kidney and pancreas is common. They usually lack specific symptoms and are mostly detected accidentally, while very rarely, some may present with complications such as rupture, torsion, hemorrhage, or infection. We report a case of a 22-year-old female in whom preoperative diagnosis of retroperitoneal lymphangioma was made on the basis of radiological investigations. On exploration, a large lymphangioma arising retroperitoneally was identified and excised. Postoperative recovery was uneventful.

Retroperitoneal cystic lymphangioma in an adult: A case report and review of the literature

Lymphangiomas are rare benign cystic tumors of the lymphatic system. Retroperitoneal lymphangiomas account for 1% of all lymphangiomas, and approximately 186 cases have been reported. They may clinically present as a palpable abdominal mass and can cause diagnostic dilemmas with other retroperitoneal cystic tumors, including those arising from the liver, kidney and pancreas. This report describes the rare case of a cystic retroperitoneal lymphangioma in a 54-year-old male patient. The lymphangioma had progressed to the point of inducing clinical symptoms of abdominal distention, abdominal pain, anorexia, fever, nausea and diarrhea. Radiological imaging revealed a large multiloculated cystic abdominal mass with enhancing septations involving the upper retroperitoneum and extending into the pelvis. Surgical removal of the cyst was accomplished without incident. A benign cystic retroperitoneal lymphangioma was diagnosed on histology and confirmed with immunohistochemical stains.

Retroperitoneal lymphangioma

Lymphangiomas are rare cystic tumours that may present as cystic masses in the retroperitoneum. Retroperitoneal lymphangiomas account for approximately 1% of all lymphangiomas. Confusion with other cystic tumours of the retroperitoneum including those arising from the liver, kidney and pancreas is common. A case of a retroperitoneal cystic lymphangioma occurring in a 41-year-old woman raising interesting diagnostic and management issues is reported. The patient presented with vague abdominal pain and persistent nausea. Radiological imaging demonstrated a large multiloculated thin-walled cyst involving the upper retroperitoneum. Surgical resection was complete, revealing a benign cavernous lymphangioma. The patient made a complete recovery and was disease-free 30 months postoperatively.
