Abstract
Cicadas are heavy fliers well known for their life cycles and sound production; however, their flight capabilities have not been extensively investigated. Here, we show for the first time that cicadas appropriate backward flight for additional maneuverability. We studied this flight mode using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations based on three-dimensional reconstructions of high-speed videos captured in a laboratory. Backward flight was characterized by steep body angles, high angles of attack, and high wing upstroke velocities. Wing motion occurred in an inclined stroke plane that was fixed relative to the body. Likewise, the directions of the half-stroke-averaged aerodynamic forces relative to the body (local frame) were constrained in a narrow range (<20°). Despite the drastic difference of approximately 90° in body posture between backward and forward flight in the global frame, the aerodynamic forces in both flight scenarios were maintained in a similar direction relative to the body. The forces relative to the body were also oriented in a similar direction when observed during climbs and turns, although the body orientation and motions were different. Hence, the steep posture appropriated during backward flight was primarily utilized for reorienting both the stroke plane and aerodynamic force in the global frame. A consequence of this reorientation was the reversal of aerodynamic functions of the half strokes in backward flight when compared to forward flight. The downstroke generated propulsive forces, while the upstroke generated vertical forces. For weight support, the upstroke, which typically generates lesser forces in forward flight, is aerodynamically active in backward flight. A leading-edge vortex (LEV) was observed on the forewings during both half strokes. The LEV's effect, together with the high upstroke velocity, increased the upstroke's force contribution from 10% of the net forces in forward flight to 50% in backward flight. The findings presented in this study have relevance to the design of micro-aerial vehicles (MAVs), as backward flight is an important characteristic for MAV maneuverability or for taking off from vertical surfaces.

Abstract
Active particles that self-propel by transforming energy into mechanical motion represent a growing area of research in mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Here we investigate the dynamics of nonspherical inertial active particles moving in a harmonic potential, introducing geometric parameters which take into account the role of eccentricity for nonspherical particles. A comparison between the overdamped and underdamped models for elliptical particles is performed. The model of overdamped active Brownian motion has been used to describe most of the basic aspects of micrometer-sized particles moving in a liquid ("microswimmers"). We consider active particles by extending the active Brownian motion model to incorporate translation and rotation inertia and account for the role of eccentricity. We show how the overdamped and the underdamped models behave in the same way for small values of activity (Brownian case) if eccentricity is equal to zero, but increasing eccentricity leads the two dynamics to substantially depart from each other-in particular, the action of a torque induced by external forces, induced a marked difference close to the walls of the domain if eccentricity is high. Effects induced by inertia include an inertial delay time of the self-propulsion direction from the particle velocity, and the differences between the overdamped and underdamped systems are particularly evident in the first and second moments of the particle velocities. Comparison with the experimental results of vibrated granular particles shows good agreement and corroborates the notion that self-propelling massive particles moving in gaseous media are dominated by inertial effects.

Abstract
Inertial effects affecting both the translational and rotational dynamics are inherent to a broad range of active systems at the macroscopic scale. Thus, there is a pivotal need for proper models in the framework of active matter to correctly reproduce experimental results, hopefully achieving theoretical insights. For this purpose, we propose an inertial version of the active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particle (AOUP) model accounting for particle mass (translational inertia) as well as its moment of inertia (rotational inertia) and derive the full expression for its steady-state properties. The inertial AOUP dynamics introduced in this paper is designed to capture the basic features of the well-established inertial active Brownian particle model, i.e. the persistence time of the active motion and the long-time diffusion coefficient. For a small or moderate rotational inertia, these two models predict similar dynamics at all timescales and, in general, our inertial AOUP model consistently yields the same trend upon changing the moment of inertia for various dynamical correlation functions.

Abstract
We present a theory to study the inertial effect on glassy dynamics of the underdamped active Brownian particle (UABP) system. Using the assumption of the nonequilibrium steady-state, we obtain an effective Fokker-Planck equation for the probability distribution function (PDF) as a function of positions and momentums. With this equation, we achieve the evolution equation of the intermediate scattering function through the Zwanzig-Mori projection operator method and the mode-coupling theory (MCT). Theoretical analysis shows that the inertia of the particle affects the memory function and corresponding glass transition by influencing the structure factor and a velocity correlation function. The theory provides theoretical support and guidance for subsequent simulation work.

Abstract
The present work investigates the effect of inertia on the entropy production rate Π for all canonical models of active particles for different dimensions and the type of confinement. To calculate Π, the link between the entropy production and dissipation of heat rate is explored, resulting in a simple and intuitive expression. By analyzing the Kramers equation, alternative formulations of Π are obtained and the virial theorem for active particles is derived. Exact results are obtained for particles in an unconfined environment and in a harmonic trap. In both cases, Π is independent of temperature. For the case of a harmonic trap, Π attains a maximal value for τ=ω^{-1}, where τ is the persistence time and ω is the natural frequency of an oscillator. For active particles in one-dimensional box, or other nonharmonic potentials, thermal fluctuations are found to reduce Π.

Abstract
Active Brownian motion commonly assumes spherical overdamped particles. However, self-propelled particles are often neither symmetric nor overdamped yet underlie random fluctuations from their surroundings. Active Brownian motion has already been generalized to include asymmetric particles. Separately, recent findings have shown the importance of inertial effects for particles of macroscopic size or in low-friction environments. We aim to consolidate the previous findings into the general description of a self-propelled asymmetric particle with inertia. We derive the Langevin equation of such a particle as well as the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation. Furthermore, a formula is presented that allows reconstructing the hydrodynamic resistance matrix of the particle by measuring its trajectory. Numerical solutions of the Langevin equation show that, independently of the particle's shape, the noise-free trajectory at zero temperature starts with an inertial transition phase and converges to a circular helix. We discuss this universal convergence with respect to the helical motion that many microorganisms exhibit.

Abstract
We study the underdamped motion of a passive particle in an active environment. Using the phase space path integral method we find the probability distribution function of position and velocity for a free and a harmonically bound particle. The environment is characterized by an active noise which is described as the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process (OUP). Taking two similar, yet slightly different OUP models, it is shown how inertia along with other relevant parameters affect the dynamics of the particle. Further we investigate the work fluctuations of a harmonically trapped particle by considering the trap center being pulled at a constant speed. Finally, the fluctuation theorem of work is validated with an effective temperature in the steady-state limit.

Abstract
We analyze the experimental data on the motion of active Brownian micrograins in RF discharge plasmas. In the experiments, two types of microparticles were used: first—plastic grains fully covered with metal, and second—Janus particles with a thin metal cap. We have tracked the trajectories of the separate grains and plotted the pair correlation functions of the observed structures. To examine the motion of the grains, we studied the dependencies of the MFPT dynamic entropy on the coarsening parameter, the fractal dimension of the system on its mean kinetic temperature, and the mean localization area of the grain on its mean kinetic temperature. Based on the obtained results, we conclude that the character of motion of our active Brownian systems changes as the power of an illuminating laser (and, therefore, the mean kinetic temperature of the grains) increases. Janus particles change their trajectories from more chaotic to spiral-like ones; in the case of fully covered particles, we observe the dynamical phase transition from the more ordered structure to the less ordered one.

Abstract
Self-propelled particles, which convert energy into mechanical motion, exhibit inertia if they have a macroscopic size or move inside a gaseous medium, in contrast to micron-sized overdamped particles immersed in a viscous fluid. Here we study an extension of the active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck model, in which self-propulsion is described by colored noise, to access these inertial effects. We summarize and discuss analytical solutions of the particle's mean-squared displacement and velocity autocorrelation function for several settings ranging from a free particle to various external influences, like a linear or harmonic potential and coupling to another particle via a harmonic spring. Taking into account the particular role of the initial particle velocity in a nonstationary setup, we observe all dynamical exponents between zero and four. After the typical inertial time, determined by the particle's mass, the results inherently revert to the behavior of an overdamped particle with the exception of the harmonically confined systems, in which the overall displacement is enhanced by inertia. We further consider an underdamped model for an active particle with a time-dependent mass, which critically affects the displacement in the intermediate time-regime. Most strikingly, for a sufficiently large rate of mass accumulation, the particle's motion is completely governed by inertial effects as it remains superdiffusive for all times.

Abstract
We report on self-propelled rotating liquid marbles fabricated using droplets of alcoholic solution encapsulated in hollow microtetrapods of GaN with hydrophilic free ends of their arms and hydrophobic lateral walls. Apart from stationary rotation, elongated-spheroid-like liquid marbles were found, for the first time, to exhibit pulsed rotation on water surfaces characterized by a threshold speed of rotation, which increased with the weight of the liquid marble while the frequency of pulses proved to decrease. To throw light upon the unusual behavior of the developed self-propelled liquid marbles, we propose a model which takes into account skimming of the liquid marbles over the water surface similar to that inherent to flying water lily beetle and the so-called helicopter effect, causing a liquid marble to rise above the level of the water surface when rotating.

Abstract
Many self-propelled objects are large enough to exhibit inertial effects but still suffer from environmental fluctuations. The corresponding basic equations of motion are governed by active Langevin dynamics, which involve inertia, friction, and stochastic noise for both the translational and orientational degrees of freedom coupled via the self-propulsion along the particle orientation. In this paper, we generalize the active Langevin model to time-dependent parameters and explicitly discuss the effect of time-dependent inertia for achiral and chiral particles. Realizations of this situation are manifold, ranging from minirockets (which are self-propelled by burning their own mass), to dust particles in plasma (which lose mass by evaporating material), to walkers with expiring activity. Here we present analytical solutions for several dynamical correlation functions, such as mean-square displacement and orientational and velocity autocorrelation functions. If the parameters exhibit a slow power law in time, we obtain anomalous superdiffusion with a nontrivial dynamical exponent. Finally, we constitute the "Langevin rocket" model by including orientational fluctuations in the traditional Tsiolkovsky rocket equation. We calculate the mean reach of the Langevin rocket and discuss different mass ejection strategies to maximize it. Our results can be tested in experiments on macroscopic robotic or living particles or in self-propelled mesoscopic objects moving in media of low viscosity, such as complex plasma.

Abstract
Butterflies are agile fliers which use inactive and active upstrokes (US). The active US plays a secondary role to the downstroke (DS), generating both thrust and negative vertical force. However, whether their active halfstroke function is fixed or facultative has not been clarified. We showed that during multiple backward flights of an individual, postural adjustments via body angles greater than 90°, with pitch-down and pitch-up motions in the DS and US, respectively, reoriented the stroke plane and caused the reversal of the aerodynamic functions of the halfstrokes compared with forward flight. The US and DS primarily provided weight support and horizontal force, respectively, and a leading edge vortex (LEV) was formed in both halfstrokes. The US's LEV was a Class II LEV extending from wingtip to wingtip, previously reported albeit during the DS in forward flight. The US's net force contribution increased from 32% in forward to 60% in backward flight. Likewise, US weight support increased from 8 to 85%. Despite different trajectories, body postures and force orientations among flight sequences in the global frame, the halfstroke-average forces pointed in a uniform direction relative to the body in both forward and backward flight.

Abstract
Honeybees display a unique biolocomotion strategy at the air-water interface. When water's adhesive force traps them on the surface, their wetted wings lose ability to generate aerodynamic thrust. However, they adequately locomote, reaching a speed up to 3 body lengths·s-1 Honeybees use their wetted wings as hydrofoils for their water surface propulsion. Their locomotion imparts hydrodynamic momentum to the surrounding water in the form of asymmetric waves and a deeper water jet stream, generating ∼20-μN average thrust. The wing kinematics show that the wing's stroke plane is skewed, and the wing supinates and pronates during its power and recovery strokes, respectively. The flow under a mechanical model wing mimicking the motion of a bee's wing further shows that nonzero net horizontal momentum is imparted to the water, demonstrating net thrust. Moreover, a periodic acceleration and deceleration of water are observed, which provides additional forward movement by "recoil locomotion." Their water surface locomotion by hydrofoiling is kinematically and dynamically distinct from surface skimming [J. H. Marden, M. G. Kramer, Science 266, 427-430 (1994)], water walking [J. W. M. Abstract
Unlike in thermodynamic equilibrium where coexisting phases always have the same temperature, here we show that systems comprising "active" self-propelled particles can self-organize into two coexisting phases at different kinetic temperatures, which are separated from each other by a sharp and persistent temperature gradient. Contrasting previous studies that have focused on overdamped descriptions of active particles, we show that a "hot-cold coexistence" occurs if and only if accounting for inertia, which is significant, e.g., in activated dusty plasmas, microflyers, whirling fruits, or beetles at interfaces. Our results exemplify a route to use active particles to create a self-sustained temperature gradient across coexisting phases. This phenomenon is fundamentally beyond equilibrium physics and is accompanied by a slow coarsening law with an exponent significantly smaller than the universal 1/3 exponent seen in both equilibrium systems and overdamped active Brownian particles.

Abstract
In this study, we investigated the backward free flight of a dragonfly, accelerating in a flight path inclined to the horizontal. The wing and body kinematics were reconstructed from the output of three high-speed cameras using a template-based subdivision surface reconstruction method, and numerical simulations using an immersed boundary flow solver were conducted to compute the forces and visualize the flow features. During backward flight, the dragonfly maintained an upright body posture of approximately 90° relative to the horizon. The upright body posture was used to reorient the stroke plane and the flight force in the global frame; a mechanism known as 'force vectoring' which was previously observed in manoeuvres of other flying animals. In addition to force vectoring, we found that while flying backward, the dragonfly flaps its wings with larger angles of attack in the upstroke (US) when compared with forward flight. Also, the backward velocity of the body in the upright position enhances the wings' net velocity in the US. The combined effect of the angle of attack and wing net velocity yields large aerodynamic force generation in the US, with the average magnitude of the force reaching values as high as two to three times the body weight. Corresponding to these large forces was the presence of a strong leading edge vortex (LEV) at the onset of US which remained attached up until wing reversal. Finally, wing-wing interaction was found to enhance the aerodynamic performance of the hindwings (HW) during backward flight. Vorticity from the forewings' trailing edge fed directly into the HW LEV to increase its circulation and enhance force production.

Abstract
Typically the motion of self-propelled active particles is described in a quiescent environment establishing an inertial frame of reference. Here we assume that friction, self-propulsion, and fluctuations occur relative to a noninertial frame and thereby the active Brownian motion model is generalized to noninertial frames. First, analytical solutions are presented for the overdamped case, both for linear swimmers and for circle swimmers. For a frame rotating with constant angular velocity ("carousel"), the resulting noise-free trajectories in the static laboratory frame are trochoids if these are circles in the rotating frame. For systems governed by inertia, such as vibrated granulates or active complex plasmas, centrifugal and Coriolis forces become relevant. For both linear and circling self-propulsion, these forces lead to out-spiraling trajectories which for long times approach a spira mirabilis. This implies that a self-propelled particle will typically leave a rotating carousel. A navigation strategy is proposed to avoid this expulsion, by adjusting the self-propulsion direction at will. For a particle, initially quiescent in the rotating frame, it is shown that this strategy only works if the initial distance to the rotation center is smaller than a critical radius R_{c} which scales with the self-propulsion velocity. Possible experiments to verify the theoretical predictions are discussed.

Abstract
Many bio-inspired robots have been developed so far after careful investigation of animals' locomotion. To successfully apply the locomotion of natural counterparts to robots for efficient and improved mobility, it is essential to understand their principles. Although a lot of research has studied either animals' locomotion or bio-inspired robots, there have only been a few attempts to broadly review both of them in a single article. Among the millions of animal species, this article reviewed various forms of aquatic locomotion in arthropods including relevant bio-inspired robots. Despite some previous robotics research inspired by aquatic arthropods, we found that many less-investigated or even unexplored areas are still present. Therefore, this article has been prepared to identify what types of new robotics research can be carried out after drawing inspiration from the aquatic locomotion of arthropods and to provide fruitful insights that may lead us to develop an agile and efficient aquatic robot.
