Drinking made easier: honey bee tongues dip faster into warmer and/or less viscous artificial nectar

Adult rhinoceros beetles use a sweeping pattern to ingest high-viscosity fluid

More than half of all insect species utilize various natural liquids as primary diet. The concentrated liquids with energy-dense nutrition can provide highly favorable rewards, however, their high-viscosity poses challenges to the insect for ingesting. Here we show that rhinoceros beetles, Trypoxylus dichotomus (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), are capable of ingesting sugar solutions with viscosities spanning four orders of magnitude, exhibiting extraordinary adaptability to diverse natural liquid sources. We discovered a previously unidentified maxillae-sweeping motion that beetles preferentially adopt to consume highly viscous liquids, achieving a higher feeding rate than the more common direct sucking. By utilizing morphological characterizations, flow visualization, and fluid-structure coupling simulation, we revealed the underlying mechanisms of how this maxillary movement facilitates the transportation of viscous liquid. Our findings not only shed light on the multi-functionality of beetle mouthparts but also provide insights into the adaptability of generalized mouthparts to a broad range of fluid sources.

Trichoid sensilla on honey bee proboscises as inspiration for micro-viscometers

Sensing physical properties of liquids, such as viscosity, is of great significance for both biological organisms and industrial applications. For terrestrial organisms feeding on liquids, such as honey bees that forage nectar, sensing viscosity may help to determine the quality of food sources. Previous experiments showed that honey bees exhibit strong preferences for less viscous nectar; however, the physical mechanism underlying how they perceive viscosity remains unexplored. In this study, we propose that the western honey bee (Apis melliferaL.) is capable of distinguishing viscosity using the slender trichoid sensilla emerging from a ball and socket-like joint on the proboscis. Observations of the trichoid sensilla using transmission electron microscopy reveal physical characteristics that are typical of mechanosensory structures. Additionally, we found that bees actively alter the rate at which they feed based on the liquid's viscosity and not its sugar content, hinting at their sensing of viscosity. Through mathematical modeling, we found that the sensitivity of the biological viscometer was determined by its length, and the optimal sensitivity for a western honey bee occurs when the tongue interacts with nectar with a viscosity of 4.2 mPa·s, coinciding with the viscosities typically found in the wild. Our findings broaden insights into how honey bees adapt to varying-viscosity nectar from the perspective of mechanical sensing, and how the bee-flower partnership may be based around the optimal nectar viscosity for feeding. By understanding how bees may sense viscosity at the micrometer scale, we may motivate new technologies for micro-viscometers.

Optimal kinematics of the bee tongue for viscous fluid transport

Honey bees can forage nectar from a large spectrum of nectariferous flowers using their rhythmically erectable tongue hairs in a viscous dipping fashion that involves a faster protraction stroke toward the nectar pool and a slower retraction stroke backward. Since honey bees are capable of using their hairy tongues to adapt to various feeding environments, the kinematic characteristics of the bee tongue, especially the retraction time, would likely represent evolutionary optimization. However, the phenomenon and mechanism remain elusive. In this combined experimental and theoretical study, we established a mathematical model to analyze the effects of tongue retraction time on the energy intake rate considering the unfolding dynamics of tongue hairs in the retraction phase. The theoretical optimal retraction time at which the energy intake rate reached the maximum was governed by the dimensions of tongue hairs, which matched well with the in vivo tests. This study may not only bridge the connection between the kinematics and geometry of the bee tongue but also shed light on a control strategy for micropumps equipped with dynamic surfaces.

Sweet solutions: nectar chemistry and quality

Nectar, the main floral reward for pollinators, varies greatly in composition and concentration. The assumption that nectar quality is equivalent to its sugar (energy) concentration is too simple. Diverse non-sugar components, especially amino acids and secondary metabolites, play various roles in nutrition and health of pollinators. Many nectar compounds have indirect effects by altering the foraging behaviour of pollinators or protecting them from disease. This review also emphasizes the water component of nectar, often ignored because of evaporative losses and difficulties in sampling small nectar volumes. Nectar properties vary with environmental factors, pollinator visits and microbial contamination. Pollination mutualisms depend on the ability of insect and vertebrate pollinators to cope with and benefit from the variation and diversity in nectar chemistry. Essential role of papillae flexibility in nectar capture by bees

Many bees possess a tongue resembling a brush composed of a central rod (glossa) covered by elongated papillae, which is dipped periodically into nectar to collect this primary source of energy. In vivo measurements show that the amount of nectar collected per lap remains essentially constant for sugar concentrations lower than 50% but drops significantly for a concentration around 70%. To understand this variation of the ingestion rate with the sugar content of nectar, we investigate the dynamics of fluid capture by Bombus terrestris as a model system. During the dipping process, the papillae, which initially adhere to the glossa, unfold when immersed in the nectar. Combining in vivo investigations, macroscopic experiments with flexible rods, and an elastoviscous theoretical model, we show that the capture mechanism is governed by the relaxation dynamics of the bent papillae, driven by their elastic recoil slowed down through viscous dissipation. At low sugar concentrations, the papillae completely open before the tongue retracts out of nectar and thus, fully contribute to the fluid capture. In contrast, at larger concentrations corresponding to the drop of the ingestion rate, the viscous dissipation strongly hinders the papillae opening, reducing considerably the amount of nectar captured. This study shows the crucial role of flexible papillae, whose aspect ratio determines the optimal nectar concentration, to understand quantitatively the capture of nectar by bees and how physics can shed some light on the degree of adaptation of a specific morphological trait.
