Charge Polarity Control in Organic Transistors of Mixed and Segregated Complexes Based on Diaminonaphthalene and Pyrene

Organic cocrystals of diaminonaphthalene (DAN) and diaminopyrene (DAP) with bromanil (BA) and tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) are an exemplar system for understanding the charge-transport process, where from the viewpoint of partition theory, orbital symmetry plays a crucial role in controlling the carrier charge polarity of transistors. In the mixed-stack complexes of BA and other p-quinone acceptors, a comparatively weak donor, 1,5-DAN, shows p-channel characteristics owing to the counteractive contribution of the next highest occupied molecular orbital for electron transport. This characteristic behavior occurs because the BA molecule, situated on top of the amino group, overlaps with half of the DAN molecule. By contrast, the BA and TCNQ complexes of a stronger donor, 1,6-DAP, exhibit n-channel transport due to the cooperative path and orthogonal orbitals. Similarly, TCNQ complexes of variously substituted DAN show n-channel transport, where the TCNQ molecules are located on top of the DAN molecules. However, when the carbon electrodes of (1,5-DAN)(BA) are replaced by silver, electron transport appears due to the competitive effect of the Schottky barriers. In a highly conducting segregated complex of (1,6-DAP)(TCNQ), ambipolar transistor characteristics are observed without subtracting the bulk current by using carefully prepared thin-film transistors.

An isotropic three-dimensional organic semiconductor 2-(thiopyran-4-ylidene)-1,3-benzodithiole (TP-BT): asymmetric molecular design to suppress access resistance

We report the synthesis of P-BT and TP-BT and their OTFT properties based on electronic dimensionality and access resistance (Racc). TP-BT can suppress Racc due to its 3D electronic structure.

Absence of HOMO/LUMO Transition in Charge-Transfer Complexes of Thienoacenes

In charge-transfer complexes, transition from the donor highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) to the acceptor lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) gives the charge-transfer absorption. However, in tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) complexes of thienoacenes, comparison of the observed and calculated charge-transfer absorption demonstrates that the HOMO/LUMO transition is absent in the solid state owing to the orbital symmetry, and the first near-infrared band comes from the transition from the donor next HOMO to the TCNQ LUMO. Maps of the oscillator strength in rotated and translated molecular geometries are calculated on the basis of the time-dependent density functional theory, in which the absence of the HOMO/LUMO transition is approximately maintained even in the general molecular geometry.

MOLC. A reversible coarse grained approach using anisotropic beads for the modelling of organic functional materials

We describe the development and implementation of a coarse grained (CG) modelling approach where complex organic molecules, and particularly the π-conjugated ones often employed in organic electronics, are modelled in terms of connected sets of attractive-repulsive biaxial Gay-Berne ellipsoidal beads. The CG model is aimed at reproducing realistically large scale morphologies (e.g. up to 100 nm thick films) for the materials involved, while being able to generate, with a back-mapping procedure, atomistic coordinates suitable, with limited effort, to be applied for charge transport calculations. Detailed methodology and an application to the common hole transporter material α-NPD are provided.

Di- and tetramethoxy benzothienobenzothiophenes: substitution position effects on the intermolecular interactions, crystal packing and transistor properties

Carrier Charge Polarity in Mixed-Stack Charge-Transfer Crystals Containing Dithienobenzodithiophene

Dithieno[2,3- d;2'3'- d']benzo[1,2- b;4,5- b']dithiophene forms mixed-stack charge-transfer complexes with fluorinated tetracyanoquinodimethanes (F _nTCNQs, n = 0, 2, and 4) and dimethyldicyanoquinonediimine (DMDCNQI). The single-crystal transistors of the F _nTCNQ complexes exhibit electron transport, whereas the DMDCNQI complex shows hole transport as well. The dominance of electron transport is explained by the superexchange mechanism, where transfers corresponding to the acceptor-to-acceptor hopping ( t_e^eff) are more than 10 times larger than the donor-to-donor hopping ( t_h^eff). This is because the donor orbital next to the highest occupied molecular orbital makes a large contribution to the electron transport owing to the symmetry matching. Like this, inherently asymmetrical electron and hole transport in alternating stacks is understood by analyzing bridge orbitals other than the transport orbitals.

Novel electronic ferroelectricity in an organic charge-order insulator investigated with terahertz-pump optical-probe spectroscopy

In electronic-type ferroelectrics, where dipole moments produced by the variations of electron configurations are aligned, the polarization is expected to be rapidly controlled by electric fields. Such a feature can be used for high-speed electric-switching and memory devices. Electronic-type ferroelectrics include charge degrees of freedom, so that they are sometimes conductive, complicating dielectric measurements. This makes difficult the exploration of electronic-type ferroelectrics and the understanding of their ferroelectric nature. Here, we show unambiguous evidence for electronic ferroelectricity in the charge-order (CO) phase of a prototypical ET-based molecular compound, α-(ET)₂I₃ (ET:bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene), using a terahertz pulse as an external electric field. Terahertz-pump second-harmonic-generation(SHG)-probe and optical-reflectivity-probe spectroscopy reveal that the ferroelectric polarization originates from intermolecular charge transfers and is inclined 27° from the horizontal CO stripe. These features are qualitatively reproduced by the density-functional-theory calculation. After sub-picosecond polarization modulation by terahertz fields, prominent oscillations appear in the reflectivity but not in the SHG-probe results, suggesting that the CO is coupled with molecular displacements, while the ferroelectricity is electronic in nature. The results presented here demonstrate that terahertz-pump optical-probe spectroscopy is a powerful tool not only for rapidly controlling polarizations, but also for clarifying the mechanisms of ferroelectricity.
