Green synthesis of alumina nanoparticle using Hibiscus rosa-sinensis leaf extract as a candidate for molybdenum-99 adsorbent

Al₂O₃ nanoparticle is effectively used as an adsorbent for the low specific activity of molybdenum-99 (⁹⁹Mo). The Al₂O₃ nanoparticle was synthesized by the green synthesis method using Hibiscus rosa-sinensis leaf extract (HRE). The Al₂O₃ nanoparticle synthesized using 10% of the HRE has a crystallite size of 4.9 nm, a surface area of 254.6 m²/g, a pore size of 9.1 nm, a pore volume of 0.58 cm³/g and has a Mo adsorption capacity of 43.4 ± 6.1 mg Mo/g.

Surface modification of acid-functionalized mesoporous gamma-alumina for non-fission 99Mo/99mTc generator

Mesoporous gamma-alumina (MGA) was synthesized for neutron-activated ⁹⁹Mo adsorbent. Acid functionalization of the MGA was carried out to enhance the Mo adsorption capacity and the ⁹⁹Mo breakthrough profile. The acid-treated MGA has a more positive particle charge, rougher surface, smaller particle and pore size, larger surface area, and wider pore distance. The acid-treated MGA has a Mo adsorption capacity of 82.8 ± 6.3 mg Mo/g and resulted in ^99mTc eluate with the ⁹⁹Mo breakthrough at the acceptable level.

Mechanisms Responsible for Adsorption of Molybdate ions on Alumina for the Production of Medical Radioisotopes

In this work, the mechanisms responsible for the adsorption of molybdate ions on alumina are investigated using in-depth surface analyses of alumina specimens immersed in solutions containing different molybdate ions at different pH values. The obtained results reveal that when alumina is immersed in an acidic solution containing molybdate ions, the hydroxyl groups present on the surface are removed to generate positively charged sites, and molybdate ions (MoO42− or AlMo6O24H63−) are adsorbed via an electrostatic interaction. Alumina dissolves slightly in an acidic solution to form AlMo6O24H63−, which is more easily desorbed than MoO42−. Furthermore, the enhancement in the Mo adsorption or desorption property may be achieved by enriching the surface of the alumina adsorbent with many –OH groups and optimizing Mo solution to adsorb molybdate ions on alumina as MoO42− ions. These findings will assist researchers in engineering more efficient and stable alumina-based adsorbents for molybdenum adsorption used in medical radioisotope (99Mo/99mTc) generators.

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles loaded with capsaicin and their oxidation resistance in meat preservation

In this work, capsaicin (CAP) was loaded into mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) with grain diameters of 50 nm, 100 nm and 400 nm by free diffusion to obtain the support materials Cap@MSN-50, Cap@MSN-100 and Cap@MSN-400, respectively. The loading capacity was separately calculated as 854.77, 713.86 and 649.09 (mg/g Cap/MSN) by ultraviolet spectrophotometry. An IFFM-E flow injection chemiluminescent analyzer was used for the slow-release experiment, which demonstrated that the MSN release of CAP proceeded with a slow-release effect and MSNs with a smaller grain diameter had a higher rate of slow release and stronger oxidation resistance. The prepared materials were used to maintain the freshness of ground beef by modified atmosphere packaging. After more than 5 days of storage, Cap@MSN-50 retained better oxidation resistance than CAP. The results show that loading CAP into mesoporous nanomaterials has the potential application value for long-term preservation and oxidation prevention of some foods.

A 195Pt NMR study on zero-magnetic-field splitting and the phosphorescence properties in the excited triplet states of cyclometalated platinum(ii) complexes

We report the factors governing zero-magnetic-field splitting (zfs) in the lowest-energy electronically excited triplet (T1) states of cyclometalated platinum(ii) complexes, whose zfs energies between the lowest- (φ1) and highest-energy spin-sublevels (φ3) in the T1 states (ΔEzfs) are already known: [Pt(bhq)(dpm)] (1Pt), [Pt(thpy)(acac)] (2Pt), [Pt(ppy)(acac)] (3Pt), cis-[Pt(thpy)2 (4Pt), and cis-[Pt(ppy)2] (5Pt), where bhq, dpm, thpy, acac, and ppy are benzo[h]quinoline, dipivaloylmethane, 2-(2-thienyl)pyridine, acetylacetone, and 2-phenylpyridine, respectively. As one of the important findings, we show the relationship between the ΔEzfs and 195Pt NMR chemical shifts of the five Pt(ii) complexes. The implications of the ΔEzfs values on the emission properties of the Pt(ii) complexes in acetonitrile at 293 K are also discussed. In particular, we demonstrate that the radiative rate constants of the Pt(ii) complexes correlate with both ΔEzfs and 195Pt NMR chemical shifts.

Mesoporous bimetallic Fe/Co as highly active heterogeneous Fenton catalyst for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochlorides

Mesoporous bimetallic Fe/Co was prepared as a Fenton-like catalyst to degrade the tetracycline hydrochlorides (TC). The nanocasting strategy with KIT-6 as a hard template was carried out to synthesize the mesoporous bimetallic catalyst. The mesoporous bimetallic Fe/Co catalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. The results showed that the catalyst has significant nanofeatures; the surface area, pore size, and particle size were 113.8 m²g⁻¹, 4 nm, and 10 nm, respectively. In addition, the effects of the operating parameters, such as the iron-to-cobalt ratio, pH, H₂O₂, and initial TC concentrations on its catalytic performance were investigated. The best operating parameters were as follows: iron-to-cobalt ratio = 2:1 to 1:1, pH = 5–9, H₂O₂: 30 mmol, initial TC less than 30 mg/L. Furthermore, the mesoporous bimetallic Fe/Co showed a good performance for degrading TC, achieving a removal rate of 86% of TC after 3 h under the reaction conditions of H₂O₂ = 30 mmol, mesoporous bimetallic Fe/Co = 0.6 g/L, TC = 30 mg/L, pH = 7.0, and temperature = 25.5 °C. The mesoporous bimetallic Fe/Co catalyst shows good stability and reusability. This work demonstrated that mesoporous bimetallic Fe/Co has excellent catalytic efficiency, smaller amounts of leached ions, and wider pH range, which enhance its potential applications.

Highly ordered mesoporous silica film nanocomposites containing gold nanoparticles for the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol

We report that transparent mesostructured silica/gold nanocomposite materials with an interpore distance of 4.1 nm, as-synthesized from a templated sol-gel synthesis method using discotic trinuclear gold(I) pyrazolate complex, were successfully utilized for the fabrication of thin film mesoporous silica nanocomposites containing gold nanoparticles. The material exhibited a highly ordered hexagonal structure when subjected to a thermal hydrogen reduction treatment at 210 °C. In contrast, when the material was subjected to calcination as a heat treatment from 190 to 450 °C, the thin film nanocomposites showed an intense d ₁₀₀ X-ray diffraction peak. Moreover, gold nanoparticles inside the thin film nanocomposites were confirmed by the presence of the d ₁₁₁ diffraction peak at 2θ = 38.2°, a surface plasmon resonance peak between 500-580 nm, and the spherical shape observed in the transmission electron microscope images, as well as the visual change in color from pink to purple. Interestingly, by simply dipping the material into a reaction solution of 4-nitrophenol at room temperature, the highly ordered structure of the as-fabricated silica/gold nanoparticle thin film composite after thermal hydrogen reduction at 210 °C resulted in an improved catalytic activity for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol compared to the material calcined at 250 °C. Such catalytic activity is due to the presence of gold nanoparticles of smaller size in the silicate channels of the highly ordered mesoporous film nanocomposites.

Interdiffusive Surfactant Procedure for the Preparation of Nanoarchitectured Porous Films: Application to the Growth of Titania Thin Films on Silicon Substrates

Herein is reported the preparation of nanostructured mesoporous supported films, in this case, titanium dioxide nanoparticles on silicon wafer, according to a new approach taking place in two consecutive deposition steps: (i) coating of a homogeneous and continuous layer of a surfactant on the selected support and (ii) building up of a second layer of the fresh metal-oxide gel precursor, followed by thermal treatment to generate porosity. This approach represents an alternative way to soft-template procedures, as for instance, the largely applied evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) method, which typically consists of a single-step deposition of the mixture of gel precursor and surfactant used as a soft template to create porosity. The main advantage of the procedure reported here compared to the EISA method is the possibility of reaching tunable textural characteristics along the growing film (pore size, shape, and distribution of pores) by using gels with nanoparticles preformed at different stages via a simple regulation of the residence time of the precursors deposited on the support containing the surfactant.

Biomolecule-Assisted Synthesis of Hierarchical Multilayered Boehmite and Alumina Nanosheets for Enhanced Molybdenum Adsorption

The effective utilization of various biomolecules for creating a series of mesoporous boehmite (γ-AlOOH) and gamma-alumina (γ-Al₂ O₃ ) nanosheets with unique hierarchical multilayered structures is demonstrated. The nature and concentration of the biomolecules strongly influence the degree of the crystallinity, the morphology, and the textural properties of the resulting γ-AlOOH and γ-Al₂ O₃ nanosheets, allowing for easy tuning. The hierarchical γ-AlOOH and γ-Al₂ O₃ multilayered nanosheets synthesized by using biomolecules exhibit enhanced crystallinity, improved particle separation, and well-defined multilayered structures compared to those obtained without biomolecules. More impressively, these γ-AlOOH and γ-Al₂ O₃ nanosheets possess high surface areas up to 425 and 371 m²  g^-1 , respectively, due to their mesoporous nature and hierarchical multilayered structure. When employed for molybdenum adsorption toward medical radioisotope production, the hierarchical γ-Al₂ O₃ multilayered nanosheets exhibit Mo adsorption capacities of 33.1-40.8 mg g^-1 . The Mo adsorption performance of these materials is influenced by the synergistic combination of the crystallinity, the surface area, and the pore volume. It is expected that the proposed biomolecule-assisted strategy may be expanded for the creation of other 3D mesoporous oxides in the future.

Utilizing Infrared Spectroscopy to Analyze the Interfacial Structures of Ionic Liquids/Al₂O₃ and Ionic Liquids/Mica Mixtures under High Pressures

The interfacial interactions between ionic liquids (1,3-dimethylimidazolium methyl sulfate and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate) and solid surfaces (mesoporous aluminum oxide and mica) have been studied by infrared spectroscopy at high pressures (up to 2.5 GPa). Under ambient pressure, the spectroscopic features of pure ionic liquids and mixtures of ionic liquids/solid particles (Al₂O₃ and mica) are similar. As the pressure is increased, the cooperative effect in the local structure of pure 1,3-dimethylimidazolium methyl sulfate becomes significantly enhanced as the imidazolium C–H absorptions of the ionic liquid are red-shifted. However, this pressure-enhanced effect is reduced by adding the solid particles (Al₂O₃ and mica) to 1,3-dimethylimidazolium methyl sulfate. Although high-pressure IR can detect the interactions between 1,3-dimethylimidazolium methyl sulfate and particle surfaces, the difference in the interfacial interactions in the mixtures of Al₂O₃ and mica is not clear. By changing the type of ionic liquid to 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate, the interfacial interactions become more sensitive to the type of solid surfaces. The mica particles in the mixture perturb the local structure of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate under high pressures, forcing 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate to form into an isolated structure. For Al₂O₃, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate tends to form an associated structure under high pressures.

Self-assembly as a key player for materials nanoarchitectonics

The development of science and technology of advanced materials using nanoscale units can be conducted by a novel concept involving combination of nanotechnology methodology with various research disciplines, especially supramolecular chemistry. The novel concept is called 'nanoarchitectonics' where self-assembly processes are crucial in many cases involving a wide range of component materials. This review of self-assembly processes re-examines recent progress in materials nanoarchitectonics. It is composed of three main sections: (1) the first short section describes typical examples of self-assembly research to outline the matters discussed in this review; (2) the second section summarizes self-assemblies at interfaces from general viewpoints; and (3) the final section is focused on self-assembly processes at interfaces. The examples presented demonstrate the strikingly wide range of possibilities and future potential of self-assembly processes and their important contribution to materials nanoarchitectonics. The research examples described in this review cover variously structured objects including molecular machines, molecular receptors, molecular pliers, molecular rotors, nanoparticles, nanosheets, nanotubes, nanowires, nanoflakes, nanocubes, nanodisks, nanoring, block copolymers, hyperbranched polymers, supramolecular polymers, supramolecular gels, liquid crystals, Langmuir monolayers, Langmuir-Blodgett films, self-assembled monolayers, thin films, layer-by-layer structures, breath figure motif structures, two-dimensional molecular patterns, fullerene crystals, metal-organic frameworks, coordination polymers, coordination capsules, porous carbon spheres, mesoporous materials, polynuclear catalysts, DNA origamis, transmembrane channels, peptide conjugates, and vesicles, as well as functional materials for sensing, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, photovoltaics, charge transport, excitation energy transfer, light-harvesting, photocatalysts, field effect transistors, logic gates, organic semiconductors, thin-film-based devices, drug delivery, cell culture, supramolecular differentiation, molecular recognition, molecular tuning, and hand-operating (hand-operated) nanotechnology.

Materials nanoarchitectonics at two-dimensional liquid interfaces

Much attention has been paid to the synthesis of low-dimensional materials from small units such as functional molecules. Bottom-up approaches to create new low-dimensional materials with various functional units can be realized with the emerging concept of nanoarchitectonics. In this review article, we overview recent research progresses on materials nanoarchitectonics at two-dimensional liquid interfaces, which are dimensionally restricted media with some freedoms of molecular motion. Specific characteristics of molecular interactions and functions at liquid interfaces are briefly explained in the first parts. The following sections overview several topics on materials nanoarchitectonics at liquid interfaces, such as the preparation of two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks, and the fabrication of low-dimensional and specifically structured nanocarbons and their assemblies at liquid-liquid interfaces. Finally, interfacial nanoarchitectonics of biomaterials including the regulation of orientation and differentiation of living cells are explained. In the recent examples described in this review, various materials such as molecular machines, molecular receptors, block-copolymer, DNA origami, nanocarbon, phages, and stem cells were assembled at liquid interfaces by using various useful techniques. This review overviews techniques such as conventional Langmuir-Blodgett method, vortex Langmuir-Blodgett method, liquid-liquid interfacial precipitation, instructed assembly, and layer-by-layer assembly to give low-dimensional materials including nanowires, nanowhiskers, nanosheets, cubic objects, molecular patterns, supramolecular polymers, metal-organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks. The nanoarchitecture materials can be used for various applications such as molecular recognition, sensors, photodetectors, supercapacitors, supramolecular differentiation, enzyme reactors, cell differentiation control, and hemodialysis.

Mesopore Connectivity Improving Aerosol-Assisted Synthesis of Mesoporous Alumina Powders with High Surface Area

Considering the closed packing of supramolecular mediated cage-type (spherical) mesopores inside spherical particles that are typically obtained by the aerosol-assisted process, uniform mesopores cannot be packed so periodically and then the mesopores are less connected and/or occasionally isolated, leading to the formation of low-surface-area mesoporous particles. In this study, we proposed the controlled swelling of such cage-type mesopores for improving their connectivity. Actually, we succeeded in preparing high-surface-area mesoporous alumina powders using poly(oxyethylene)- block-poly(oxypropylene)- block-poly(oxyethylene) (EO _nPO _mEO _n) type triblock copolymers such as Pluronic P123. The surface area of the mesoporous alumina powders was originally low (278 m² g^-1 without organic additives), which can be drastically increased up to ca. 540 m² g^-1 through the controlled welling with suitable addition of 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene and 1,3,5-triisopropylbenzene. The insight is promising for further development of the aerosol-assisted approach for recovering high-quality mesoporous powders and helpful for rational catalyst design by utilizing mesoporous alumina powders with extremely high surface area.

Nanoarchitectonic-Based Material Platforms for Environmental and Bioprocessing Applications

The challenges of pollution, environmental science, and energy consumption have become global issues of broad societal importance. In order to address these challenges, novel functional systems and advanced materials are needed to achieve high efficiency, low emission, and environmentally friendly performance. A promising approach involves nanostructure-level controls of functional material design through a novel concept, nanoarchitectonics. In this account article, we summarize nanoarchitectonic approaches to create nanoscale platform structures that are potentially useful for environmentally green and bioprocessing applications. The introduced platforms are roughly classified into (i) membrane platforms and (ii) nanostructured platforms. The examples are discussed together with the relevant chemical processes, environmental sensing, bio-related interaction analyses, materials for environmental remediation, non-precious metal catalysts, and facile separation for biomedical uses.

Materials Nanoarchitectonics for Mechanical Tools in Chemical and Biological Sensing

In this Focus Review, nanoarchitectonic approaches for mechanical-action-based chemical and biological sensors are briefly discussed. In particular, recent examples of piezoelectric devices, such as quartz crystal microbalances (QCM and QCM-D) and a membrane-type surface stress sensor (MSS), are introduced. Sensors need well-designed nanostructured sensing materials for the sensitive and selective detection of specific targets. Nanoarchitectonic approaches for sensing materials, such as mesoporous materials, 2D materials, fullerene assemblies, supported lipid bilayers, and layer-by-layer assemblies, are highlighted. Based on these sensing approaches, examples of bioanalytical applications are presented for toxic gas detection, cell membrane interactions, label-free biomolecular assays, anticancer drug evaluation, complement activation-related multiprotein membrane attack complexes, and daily biodiagnosis, which are partially supported by data analysis, such as machine learning and principal component analysis.

Template-Free Fabrication of Mesoporous Alumina Nanospheres Using Post-Synthesis Water-Ethanol Treatment of Monodispersed Aluminium Glycerate Nanospheres for Molybdenum Adsorption

This work reports the template-free fabrication of mesoporous Al₂ O₃ nanospheres with greatly enhanced textural characteristics through a newly developed post-synthesis "water-ethanol" treatment of aluminium glycerate nanospheres followed by high temperature calcination. The proposed "water-ethanol" treatment is highly advantageous as the resulting mesoporous Al₂ O₃ nanospheres exhibit 2-4 times higher surface area (up to 251 m² g^-1 ), narrower pore size distribution, and significantly lower crystallization temperature than those obtained without any post-synthesis treatment. To demonstrate the generality of the proposed strategy, a nearly identical post-synthesis "water treatment" method is successfully used to prepare mesoporous monometallic (e.g., manganese oxide (MnO₂ )) and bimetallic oxide (e.g., CuCo₂ O₄ and MnCo₂ O₄ ) nanospheres assembled of nanosheets or nanoplates with highly enhanced textural characteristics from the corresponding monometallic and bimetallic glycerate nanospheres, respectively. When evaluated as molybdenum (Mo) adsorbents for potential use in molybdenum-99/technetium-99m (⁹⁹ Mo/^99m Tc) generators, the treated mesoporous Al₂ O₃ nanospheres display higher molybdenum adsorption performance than non-treated Al₂ O₃ nanospheres and commercial Al₂ O₃ , thereby suggesting the effectiveness of the proposed strategy for improving the functional performance of oxide materials. It is expected that the proposed method can be utilized to prepare other mesoporous metal oxides with enhanced textural characteristics and functional performance.

Biocarbon-templated synthesis of porous Ni–Co-O nanocomposites for room-temperature NH3 sensors

Mesoporous nickel–cobalt oxide (Ni–Co-O) nanocomposites were fabricated using a mesoporous biocarbon material (BCM), resulting from hemp stem, as a template.
