Recent Advances of Chiral Isolated and Small Organic Molecules: Structure and Properties for Circularly Polarized Luminescence

This paper explores recent advancements in the field of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) exhibited by small and isolated organic molecules. The development and application of small CPL molecule are systematically reviewed through eight different chiral skeleton sections. Investigating the intricate interplay between molecular structure and CPL properties, the paper aims at providing and enlighting novel strategies for CPL-based applications.

Furan-Containing Chiral Spiro-Fused Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds: Synthesis and Photophysical Properties

Spiro-fused polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) have received growing interest as rigid chiral scaffolds. However, furan-containing spiro-fused PACs have been quite limited. Here, we design spiro[indeno[1,2-b][1]benzofuran-10,10′-indeno[1,2-b][1]benzothiophene] as a new family of spiro-fused PACs that contains a furan unit. The compound was successfully synthesized in enantiopure form and also transformed to its S,S-dioxide derivative and the pyrrole-containing analog via aromatic metamorphosis. The absorption and emission properties of the obtained furan-containing chiral spiro-fused PACs are apparently different from those of their thiophene analogs that have been reported, owing to the increased electron-richness of furan compared to thiophene. All of the furan-containing chiral spiro-fused PACs were found to be circularly polarized luminescent materials.

Synthesis, Stereochemical and Photophysical Properties of Functionalized Thiahelicenes

We report on the synthesis of a novel class of functionalized thia[6]helicenes and a thia[5]helicene, containing a benzothiophene unit and a second heteroatom embedded in the helix (i.e., nitrogen and oxygen) or a pyrene or a spirobifluorene moiety. These systems are obtained through straightforward and general procedures that involve: (i) palladium-catalyzed annulation of iodo-atropoisomers with internal alkynes and (ii) Suzuki coupling of iodo-atropoisomers with phenyl boronic acid followed by a Mallory-type reaction. Both experimental and theoretical studies on the configurational stability of some selected thia[6]helicenes confirmed their stability toward racemization at room temperature, while the pyrene-based thia[5]helicene was found to be unstable. Moreover, the configuration assignment for one representative thiahelicene was established through the comparison between experimental and theoretical circular dichroism (CD) spectra. A systematic study of the photophysical properties of both thiahelicenes and the corresponding atropoisomers has been carried out to provide a complete overview on the new molecules proposed in this work. The obtained data showed regular trends in all the thiahelicene series with spectroscopic traits in line with those previously observed for similar heterohelicenes.

Transformation of Thia[7]helicene to Aza[7]helicenes and [7]Helicene-like Compounds via Aromatic Metamorphosis

[n]Helicenes with helically twisted structures have attracted increasing interest owing to their unique properties. Therefore, it has been an important issue to develop facile synthetic methodologies which allow access to a variety of [n]helicenes. Here we report the synthesis of [7]helicenes and [7]helicene-like compounds from the thia[7]helicene as a common starting material. Desulfurative dilithiation of the thia[7]helicene and the subsequent reaction with silicon and phosphorus electrophiles afforded the silole- and phosphole-fused [7]helicene-like compounds, respectively. The cyclopentadiene-fused [7]helicene-like compound and the pyrrole-fused aza[7]helicenes were also successfully synthesized via twofold S_NAr reactions of the thia[7]helicene S,S-dioxide with the carbon and nitrogen nucleophiles, respectively. The thia[7]helicene S,S-dioxide showed a slightly red-shifted absorption spectrum than the parent thia[7]helicene, which was well demonstrated by the theoretical calculations. The substituents on the silicon atom of silole-fused [7]helicene-like compounds have little impact on the longest absorption maximum. Such little effect of the substituents on absorption properties was also observed for cyclopentadiene-fused [7]helicene-like compounds and aza[7]helicenes and was well demonstrated by the theoretical calculations. The thia[7]helicene S,S-dioxide and the silole-fused [7]helicene-like compound exhibited bright blue emission, and the cyclopentadiene-fused [7]helicene-like compound and the aza[7]helicenes showed strong violet emission. Each single enantiomer of the aza[7]helicenes showed circularly-polarized luminescence with the dissymmetry factors of 4.2~4.4 × 10⁻³.

A Tandem Nucleophilic Aminopalladation and Carbene Insertion Sequence for Indole Fused Polycycles

An efficient tandem nucleophilic aminopalladation and carbene insertion sequence is described for the synthesis of indole fused polycycles. The reaction process provides a variety of substituted indeno[1,2-b]indoles in up to 99% yields.

Aromatic Metamorphosis of Thiophenes by Means of Desulfurative Dilithiation

A new mode of aromatic metamorphosis has been developed, which allows thiophenes and their benzo-fused derivatives to be converted to a variety of exotic heteroles. This transformation involves 1) the efficient generation of key 1,4-dianions by means of desulfurative dilithiation with lithium powder and 2) the subsequent trapping of the dianions with heteroatom electrophiles in a one-pot manner. Via the desulfurative dilithiation, the sulfur atoms of thiophenes are replaced also with a carbon-carbon double bond or a 1,2-phenylene for the construction of benzene rings.

Chiral Benzo[b]silole-Fused 9,9'-Spirobi[fluorene]: Synthesis, Chiroptical Properties, and Transformation to π-Extended Polycyclic Arene

Chiral spiro π-conjugated compounds have emerged as a new class of circularly polarized luminescent organic materials. Here we report the synthesis and (chir)optical properties of a chiral benzo[b]silole-fused 9,9'-spirobi[fluorene] (SBF) and π-extended spiro polycyclic arene. The benzo[b]silole-fused SBF was successfully synthesized by a rhodium-catalyzed intramolecular silylative cyclization. It was further transformed to the chiral π-extended spiro polycyclic arene by an annulative π-extension reaction. Less effective spiroconjugation was observed for these spiro compounds through UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. They exhibit circularly polarized luminescence with the dissymmetry factors of up to 0.76×10^-3 . Theoretical calculations demonstrate that emission of the benzo[b]silole-fused SBF occurs from one subunit, the structure of which is slightly different from that in the Frank-Condon state.

Control of Molecular Orientation of Spiro-OMeTAD on Substrates

2,2',7,7'-Tetrakis(N,N-di-p-methoxyphenylamino)-9,9'-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD) is utilized as a p-type semiconductor layer in perovskite solar cells and solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells. Spiro-OMeTAD has been known to have a spiro center, leading to a random orientation. Although the molecular orientation of organic semiconductor materials influences the conductivity, which is directly related to semiconductor device characteristics, the molecular orientation of spiro-OMeTAD has not been fully discussed. In this study, we prepared spiro-OMeTAD layers on various substrates and investigated their orientation by grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS). Additionally, we demonstrated that the molecular orientation of spiro-OMeTAD could be controlled by changing their surface energies by changing the substrate materials. Consequently, we could improve the electrical conductivity by improving its molecular orientation. The results of this study provide a guideline for the preparation of organic semiconductor material layers using the wet-coating method.

Supramolecular Chiral Nanoarchitectonics

Exploration of molecular functions and material properties based on the control of chirality would be a scientifically elegant approach. Here, the fabrication and function of chiral-featured materials from both chiral and achiral components using a supramolecular nanoarchitectonics concept are discussed. The contents are classified in to three topics: i) chiral nanoarchitectonics of rather general molecular assemblies; ii) chiral nanoarchitectonics of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs); iii) chiral nanoarchitectonics in liquid crystals. MOF structures are based on nanoscopically well-defined coordinations, while mesoscopic orientations of liquid-crystalline phases are often flexibly altered. Discussion on the effects and features in these representative materials systems with totally different natures reveals the universal importance of supramolecular chiral nanoarchitectonics. Amplification of chiral molecular information from molecules to materials-level structures and the creation of chirality from achiral components upon temporal statistic fluctuations are universal, regardless of the nature of the assemblies. These features are thus surely advantageous characteristics for a wide range of applications.

Rigidly Fused Spiro-Conjugated π-Systems

Spiro-fused π-systems have gained considerable attention for their application as semiconductors in molecular electronics. Here, a synopsis regarding recent breakthroughs in ladderized spirobifluorenes and indeno-spirobifluorenes, along with further spiro-condensed heteroatomic hydrocarbons with donor-acceptor moieties, is provided. Additionally, an extended range of rigid spirobifluorene polymers and specific doubly linked spiro-systems with partial chiral character is discussed. The diverse applications of the aforementioned structures are thoroughly evaluated.

Designing a near-infrared circularly polarized luminescent dye by dissymmetric spiro-fusion

A novel spiro-fused terrylene dimer (SDT) was designed and synthesized by a dissymmetric spiro-fusion strategy. The spiro-conjugation effect caused a distinct red-shift and enhancement of the absorption spectrum. Two chiral enantiomers of SDT have been absolutely resolved and identified in combination with theoretical calculations. Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) measurement revealed its potential as a near-infrared chiral luminescent material.

Solvent-sensitive circularly polarized luminescent compounds bearing a 9,9′-spirobi[fluorene] skeleton

Chiral 9,9′-spirobi[fluorene] derivatives with a donor–π–acceptor system were prepared and found to exhibit solvent-sensitive circularly polarized luminescence.

Synthesis of N-Alkyl and N-H-Carbazoles through SN Ar-Based Aminations of Dibenzothiophene Dioxides

Alkyl amines have become available for the synthesis of diverse N-alkyl carbazoles through twofold S_N Ar aminations of dibenzothiophene dioxides by using alkali metal bases. Of particular importance is the choice of counter cations on alkali metal bases, that is, i) the use of Li base for the efficient intermolecular reaction and ii) the sequential addition of heavier alkali metal bases (Na, K, or Cs) to promote intramolecular cyclization in a one-pot manner. This protocol also enables the cascade synthesis of N-H-carbazoles by using 2-phenylethylamine by removal of the 2-phenethyl group from N-(2-phenethyl) carbazoles in a single operation.
