Self-Assembled and Polymerized Hierarchical Nanostructure Films of Cyanostilbene-Based Reactive AIEgens for Smart Chemosensors

For the development of acid-responsive advanced fluorescent films with a 2D nanostructure, a pyridyl cyanostilbene-based AIEgen (PCRM) is newly synthesized. The synthesized PCRM exhibits aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and responds reversibly to acid and base stimuli. To fabricate the nanoporous polymer-stabilized film, PCRM and 4-(octyloxy)benzoic acid (8OB) are complexed in a 1:1 ratio through hydrogen bonding. The PCRM-8OB complex with a smectic mesophase is uniaxially oriented at first and photopolymerized with a crosslinker. By subsequently removing 8OB in an alkaline solution, nanopores are generated in the self-assembled and polymerized hierarchical 2D nanostructure film. The prepared nanoporous fluorescent films exhibit not only the reversible response to acid and base stimuli but also mechanical and chemical robustness. Since the nanoporous fluorescent films have different sensitivities to trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) depending on the molecular orientation in the film, advanced acid vapor sensors that can display the risk level according to the concentration of TFA are demonstrated. Reactive AIEgens-based hierarchical nanostructure films with nanopores fabricated by a subsequent process of self-assembly, polymerization, and etching can open a new door for the development of advanced chemosensors.

Aquatic Functional Liquid Crystals: Design, Functionalization, and Molecular Simulation

Aquatic functional liquid crystals, which are ordered molecular assemblies that work in water environment, are described in this review. Aquatic functional liquid crystals are liquid-crystalline (LC) materials interacting water molecules or aquatic environment. They include aquatic lyotropic liquid crystals and LC based materials that have aquatic interfaces, for example, nanoporous water treatment membranes that are solids preserving LC order. They can remove ions and viruses with nano- and subnano-porous structures. Columnar, smectic, bicontinuous LC structures are used for fabrication of these 1D, 2D, 3D materials. Design and functionalization of aquatic LC sensors based on aqueous/LC interfaces are also described. The ordering transitions of liquid crystals induced by molecular recognition at the aqueous interfaces provide distinct optical responses. Molecular orientation and dynamic behavior of these aquatic functional LC materials are studied by molecular dynamics simulations. The molecular interactions of LC materials and water are key of these investigations. New insights into aquatic functional LC materials contribute to the fields of environment, healthcare, and biotechnology.

Using singular value decomposition to analyze drug/β-cyclodextrin mixtures: insights from X-ray powder diffraction patterns

The article discusses the use of mathematical models and linear algebra to understand the crystalline structures and interconversion pathways of drug complexes with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). It involved the preparation and analysis of mixtures of indomethacin, diclofenac, famotidine, and cimetidine with β-CD using techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR). Singular value decomposition (SVD) analysis is used to identify the presence of different polymorphs in the mixtures of these drugs and β-CD, determine interconversion pathways, and distinguish between different forms. In general, linear algebra or artificial intelligence (AI) is used to approximate the contribution of distinguishable entities to various phenomena. We expected linear algebra to completely reveal all eight entities present in the diffractogram dataset. However, after performing the SVD procedure, we found that only six independent basis functions were extracted, and the entities of the INM α-form and the CIM B-form were not included. It is considered that this is due to that data processing is limited to revealing only six or seven independent factors, as it is a small world. The authors caution that these may not always reproduce or approach reality in complicated real-world situations.

Imaging of Accumulated Mechanical Stresses Using Self-Assembled Layered Conjugated Polymer

When mechanical stresses, such as tensile, compressive, and frictional stresses, are applied to objects by various motions, they are accumulated in materials. Conventional mechanoresponsive materials and sensors detect one-time applied stress. However, the accumulated stresses are not visualized or measured in previous works. The present study demonstrated imaging and sensing of not only one-time but also accumulated tensile, compressive, and frictional stresses. Polyurethane (PU) film was combined with 2D layered polydiacetylene (PDA), a stimuli-responsive color-changing polymer. PDA generally exhibits no color changes with the application of tensile and compression stresses because the molecular motion leading to the color change is not induced by such mechanical stresses. Here the versatile mechanoresponsiveness was achieved using a block copolymer guest partially intercalated in the layered PDA. As the interlayer and outerlayer segments interact with PDA and PU, respectively, the applied stresses to the film are transferred from PU to PDA via the block copolymer guest. The color changes of the film imaged and quantified the accumulated work depending on the number and strength of the applied multiple stresses such as tensile, compressive, and frictional stresses. The design strategy of materials and methodology of sensing can be applied to the development of new sensors for accumulated mechanical stresses in a wide range of length and strength scales.

Experimental probing of dynamic self-organized columnar assemblies in colloidal liquid crystals

Self-organized supramolecular assemblies are widespread in nature and technology in the form of liquid crystals, colloids, and gels. The reversible nature of non-covalent bonding leads to dynamic functions such as stimuli-responsive switching and self-healing, which are unachievable from an isolated molecule. However, multiple intermolecular interactions generate diverse conformational and configurational molecular motions over various time scales in their self-assembled states, and their specific dynamics remains unclear. In the present study, we have experimentally unveiled the static structures and dynamical behaviors in columnar colloidal liquid crystals by a coherent X-ray scattering technique using refined model samples. We have found that controlling the size distribution of the colloidal nanoplates dramatically changed their static and dynamic properties. Furthermore, the resulting dynamical behaviors obtained by X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy have been successfully decomposed into multiple distinct modes, allowing us to explore the dynamical origin in the colloidal liquid-crystalline state. The present approaches using a columnar liquid crystal may contribute to a better understanding of the dynamic nature of molecular assemblies and dense colloidal systems and bring valuable insights into rational design of functional properties of self-assembled materials such as stimuli-responsive liquid crystals, self-healing gels, and colloidal crystals. For these materials, the motion of constituent particles and molecules in the self-assembled state is a key factor for structural formation and dynamically responsive performance.

Molecular nanoarchitectonics: unification of nanotechnology and molecular/materials science

The development of nanotechnology has provided an opportunity to integrate a wide range of phenomena and disciplines from the atomic scale, the molecular scale, and the nanoscale into materials. Nanoarchitectonics as a post-nanotechnology concept is a methodology for developing functional material systems using units such as atoms, molecules, and nanomaterials. Especially, molecular nanoarchitectonics has been strongly promoted recently by incorporating nanotechnological methods into organic synthesis. Examples of research that have attracted attention include the direct observation of organic synthesis processes at the molecular level with high resolution, and the control of organic syntheses with probe microscope tips. These can also be considered as starting points for nanoarchitectonics. In this review, these examples of molecular nanoarchitectonics are introduced, and future prospects of nanoarchitectonics are discussed. The fusion of basic science and the application of practical functional materials will complete materials chemistry for everything.

Reentrant 2D Nanostructured Liquid Crystals by Competition between Molecular Packing and Conformation: Potential Design for Multistep Switching of Ionic Conductivity

Reentrant phenomena in soft matter and biosystems have attracted considerable attention because their properties are closely related to high functionality. Here, we report a combined experimental and computational study on the self-assembly and reentrant behavior of a single-component thermotropic smectic liquid crystal toward the realization of dynamically functional materials. We have designed and synthesized a mesogenic molecule consisting of an alicyclic trans,trans-bicyclohexyl mesogen and a polar cyclic carbonate group connected by a flexible tetra(oxyethylene) spacer. The molecule exhibits an unprecedented sequence of layered smectic phases, in the order: smectic A-smectic B-reentrant smectic A. Electron density profiles and large-scale molecular dynamics simulations indicate that competition between the stacking of bicyclohexyl mesogens and the conformational flexibility of tetra(oxyethylene) chains induces this unusual reentrant behavior. Ion-conductive reentrant liquid-crystalline materials have been developed, which undergo the multistep conductivity changes in response to temperature. The reentrant liquid crystals have potential as new mesogenic materials exhibiting switching functions.

Intermolecular hydrogen bonding of alcohols with dinitrobenzene radical anion and dianion: A combined electrochemical and DFT study

Hydrogen bonding is one of the most important inter-molecular interactions in the field of biochemistry and medicinal chemistry. Such non-covalent interactions play a vital role in self-assembly phenomena, chemical structures, material properties and enzymatic catalysis. Herein, we present hydrogen bonding phenomenon in alcohols-dinitrobenzene (DNB) radical anion/dianion systems using electrochemical and computational approaches. First, 1,3-DNB radical anion and dianion were generated through electrochemical method and then hydrogen bonding interactions with aliphatic alcohols in DMSO are studied through cyclic voltammetry (CV). CV results show that the cathodic peak potential of 1,3-Dinitrobenzene in Dimethyl sulfoxide is shifted catholically upon addition of alcohols which represent hydrogen bonding phenomenon. Theoretical investigations are performed to gain deep insight on hydrogen bonding interaction strength in DNB-alcohol systems. H-bonding interaction of all isomers of DNB (1,2-, 1,3-, 1,4-), its corresponding radical anion, and dianion with aliphatic alcohols is studied using density functional calculations. The strength of H-bonding is evaluated both qualitatively and quantitatively using interaction energies, vibrational and electronic spectroscopic analysis. Understanding of these interactions will be helpful in gaining insight into biological systems where these interactions play significant role.

Molecular Machines and Microrobots: Nanoarchitectonics Developments and On-Water Performances

This review will focus on micromachines and microrobots, which are objects at the micro-level with similar machine functions, as well as nano-level objects such as molecular machines and nanomachines. The paper will initially review recent examples of molecular machines and microrobots that are not limited to interfaces, noting the diversity of their functions. Next, examples of molecular machines and micromachines/micro-robots functioning at the air-water interface will be discussed. The behaviors of molecular machines are influenced significantly by the specific characteristics of the air-water interface. By placing molecular machines at the air-water interface, the scientific horizon and depth of molecular machine research will increase dramatically. On the other hand, for microrobotics, more practical and advanced systems have been reported, such as the development of microrobots and microswimmers for environmental remediations and biomedical applications. The research currently being conducted on the surface of water may provide significant basic knowledge for future practical uses of molecular machines and microrobots.

Multi-energy dissipation mechanisms in supramolecular hydrogels with fast and slow relaxation modes

Reversible cross-links by non-covalent bonds have been widely used to produce supramolecular hydrogels that are both tough and functional. While various supramolecular hydrogels with several kinds of reversible cross-links have been designed for many years, a universal design that would allow control of mechanical and functional properties remains unavailable. The physical properties of reversible cross-links are usually quantified by thermodynamics, dynamics, and bond energies. Herein, we investigated the relationship between the molecular mobility and mechanical toughness of supramolecular hydrogels consisting of two kinetically distinct reversible cross-links via host-guest interactions. The molecular mobility was quantified as the second-order average relaxation time (〈τ〉_w) of the reversible cross-links. We discovered that hydrogels combining fast (〈τ〉_w = 1.8 or 18 s) and slowly (〈τ〉_w = 6.6 × 10³ or 9.5 × 10³ s) reversible cross-links showed increased toughness compared to hydrogels with only one type of cross-link because relaxation processes in the former occurred with wide timescales.

Coatable 2D Conjugated Polymers Containing Bulky Macromolecular Guests for Thermal Imaging

Dynamic properties are derived from the structural flexibility of 2D polymers. Softening layered structures has the potential for tuning and enhancing the dynamic properties. In the present work, the flexibility of layered polydiacetylene (PDA) is tuned by the interlayer polymeric guests with different branching structures. PDA shows thermoresponsive color-change properties through shortening the effective conjugation length with molecular motion. Whereas the blue-to-red color transition is observed at certain threshold temperatures for the layered PDA without the interlayer guest, the intercalation of the bulky polymer guests lowers the starting temperature and widens the temperature range for the thermoresponsive color changes. The resultant layered composite of PDA and bulky polymer affords the homogeneous coating on substrates on the centimeter scale. The thermoresponsive color-change coating is applied to temperature-distribution imaging. The specific heat of liquids is colorimetrically estimated using the coating on the bottle. The coating on a silk cloth visualizes the temperature distribution on a simulated tissue during surgical operation using an ultrasonic coagulation cutting device. The coating can be applied to thermal imaging in a variety of fields. Moreover, the softening strategy contributes to explore dynamic properties of soft 2D materials.

How Do Intermolecular Interactions Evolve at the Nematic to Twist–Bent Phase Transition?

Polarized beam infrared (IR) spectroscopy provides valuable information on changes in the orientation of samples in nematic phases, especially on the role of intermolecular interactions in forming the periodically modulated twist–bent phase. Infrared absorbance measurements and quantum chemistry calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) were performed to investigate the structure and how the molecules interact in the nematic (N) and twist–bend (N_TB) phases of thioether dimers. The nematic twist–bend phase observed significant changes in the mean IR absorbance. On cooling, the transition from the N phase to the N_TB phase was found to be accompanied by a marked decrease in absorbance for longitudinal dipoles. Then, with further cooling, the absorbance of the transverse dipoles increased, indicating that transverse dipoles became correlated in parallel. To investigate the influence of the closest neighbors, DFT calculations were performed. As a result of the optimization of the molecular cores system, we observed changes in the square of the transition dipoles, which well corresponds to absorbance changes observed in the IR spectra. Interactions of molecules dominated by pairing were observed, as well as the axial shift of the core to each other.

Molecule-to-Material-to-Bio Nanoarchitectonics with Biomedical Fullerene Nanoparticles

Nanoarchitectonics integrates nanotechnology with various other fields, with the goal of creating functional material systems from nanoscale units such as atoms, molecules, and nanomaterials. The concept bears strong similarities to the processes and functions seen in biological systems. Therefore, it is natural for materials designed through nanoarchitectonics to truly shine in bio-related applications. In this review, we present an overview of recent work exemplifying how nanoarchitectonics relates to biology and how it is being applied in biomedical research. First, we present nanoscale interactions being studied in basic biology and how they parallel nanoarchitectonics concepts. Then, we overview the state-of-the-art in biomedical applications pursuant to the nanoarchitectonics framework. On this basis, we take a deep dive into a particular building-block material frequently seen in nanoarchitectonics approaches: fullerene. We take a closer look at recent research on fullerene nanoparticles, paying special attention to biomedical applications in biosensing, gene delivery, and radical scavenging. With these subjects, we aim to illustrate the power of nanomaterials and biomimetic nanoarchitectonics when applied to bio-related applications, and we offer some considerations for future perspectives.

Materials nanoarchitectonics in a two-dimensional world within a nanoscale distance from the liquid phase

Promoted understanding of nanotechnology has enabled the construction of functional materials with nanoscale-regulated structures. Accordingly, materials science requires one-step further innovation by coupling nanotechnology with the other materials sciences. As a post-nanotechnology concept, nanoarchitectonics has recently been proposed. It is a methodology to architect functional material systems using atomic, molecular, and nanomaterial unit-components. One of the attractive methodologies would be to develop nanoarchitectonics in a defined dimensional environment with certain dynamism, such as liquid interfaces. However, nanoarchitectonics at liquid interfaces has not been fully explored because of difficulties in direct observations and evaluations with high-resolutions. This unsatisfied situation in the nanoscale understanding of liquid interfaces may keep liquid interfaces as unexplored and attractive frontiers in nanotechnology and nanoarchitectonics. Research efforts related to materials nanoarchitectonics on liquid interfaces have been continuously made. As exemplified in this review paper, a wide range of materials can be organized and functionalized on liquid interfaces, including organic molecules, inorganic nanomaterials, hybrids, organic semiconductor thin films, proteins, and stem cells. Two-dimensional nanocarbon sheets have been fabricated by molecular reactions at dynamically moving interfaces, and metal-organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks have been fabricated by specific interactions and reactions at liquid interfaces. Therefore, functions such as sensors, devices, energy-related applications, and cell control are being explored. In fact, the potential for the nanoarchitectonics of functional materials in two-dimensional nanospaces at liquid surfaces is sufficiently high. On the basis of these backgrounds, this short review article describes recent approaches to materials nanoarchitectonics in a liquid-based two-dimensional world, i.e., interfacial regions within a nanoscale distance from the liquid phase.

Study of the Experimental and Simulated Vibrational Spectra Together with Conformational Analysis of Thioether Cyanobiphenyl-Based Liquid Crystal Dimers

Infrared spectroscopy (IR) and quantum chemistry calculations that are based on the density functional theory (DFT) have been used to study the structure and molecular interactions of the nematic and twist-bend phases of thioether-linked dimers. Infrared absorbance measurements were conducted in a polarized beam for a homogeneously aligned sample in order to obtain more details about the orientation of the vibrational transition dipole moments. The distributions to investigate the structure and conformation of the molecule dihedral angle were calculated. The calculated spectrum was compared with the experimental infrared spectra and as a result, detailed vibrational assignments are reported.

Nanoarchitectonics for conductive polymers using solid and vapor phases

Conductive polymers have been extensively studied as functional organic materials due to their broad range of applications. Conductive polymers, such as polypyrrole, polythiophene, and their derivatives, are typically obtained as coatings and precipitates in the solution phase. Nanoarchitectonics for conductive polymers requires new methods including syntheses and morphology control. For example, nanoarchitectonics is achieved by liquid-phase syntheses with the assistance of templates, such as macromolecules and porous materials. This minireview summarizes the other new synthetic methods using the solid and vapor phases for nanoarchitectonics. In general, the monomers and related species are supplied from the solution phase. Our group has studied polymerization of heteroaromatic monomers using the solid and vapor phases. The surface and inside of solid crystals were used for the polymerization with the diffusion of the heteroaromatic monomer vapor. Our nanoarchitectonics affords to form homogeneous coatings, hierarchical structures, composites, and copolymers for energy-related applications. The concepts using solid and vapor phases can be applied to nanoarchitectonics for not only conductive polymers but also other polymers toward a variety of applications.

Biomineral-Inspired Colloidal Liquid Crystals: From Assembly of Hybrids Comprising Inorganic Nanocrystals and Organic Polymer Components to Their Functionalization

Bioinspired organic/inorganic synthetic composites have been studied as high-performance and functional materials. In nature, biominerals such as pearls, teeth, and bones are self-organized organic/inorganic composites. The inorganic components are composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) and hydroxyapatite (HAp), while the organic components consist of peptides and polysaccharides. These composites are used as structural materials in hard biological tissues. Biominerals do not show significantly higher performances than synthetic composites such as glass-fiber- or carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics. However, biominerals consist of environmentally friendly and biocompatible components that are prepared under mild conditions. Moreover, they form elaborate nanostructures and self-organized hierarchical structures. Much can be learned about material design from these biomineral-based hierarchical and nanostructured composites to assist in the preparation of functional materials.

Inspired by these biological hard tissues, we developed nanostructured thin films and bulk hybrid crystals through the self-organization of organic polymers and inorganic crystals of CaCO₃ or HAp. In biomineralization, the combination of insoluble components and soluble acidic macromolecules controls the crystallization process. We have shown that poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) or acidic peptides called polymer additives induce the formation of thin film crystals of CaCO₃ or HAp by cooperation with insoluble organic templates such as chitin and synthetic polymers bearing the OH group. Moreover, we recently developed CaCO₃- and HAp-based nanostructured particles with rod and disk shapes. These were obtained in aqueous media using a macromolecular acidic additive, PAA, without using insoluble polymer templates. At appropriate concentrations, the anisotropic particles self-assembled and formed colloidal liquid-crystalline (LC) phases.

LC materials are generally composed of organic molecules. They show ordered and mobile states. The addition of stimuli-responsive properties to organic rod-like LC molecules led to the successful development of informational displays, which are now widely used. On the other hand, colloidal liquid crystals are colloidal self-assembled dispersions of anisotropic organic and inorganic nano- and micro-objects. For example, polysaccharide whiskers, clay nanosheets, gibbsite plate-shaped particles, and silica rod-shaped particles exhibit colloidal LC states.

In this Account, we focused on the material design and hierarchical aspects of biomineral-based colloidal LC polymer/inorganic composites. We describe the design and preparation, nanostructures, and self-assembled behavior of these new bioinspired and biocompatible self-organized materials. The characterization results for these self-assembled nanostructured colloidal liquid crystals found using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, and neutron scattering and rheological measurements are also reported. The functions of these biomineral-inspired liquid crystals are presented. Because these biomineral-based LC colloidal liquid crystals can be prepared under mild and aqueous conditions and they consist of environmentally friendly and biocompatible components, new functions are expected for these materials.

Advanced Functional Liquid Crystals

Liquid crystals have been intensively studied as functional materials. Recently, integration of various disciplines has led to new directions in the design of functional liquid-crystalline materials in the fields of energy, water, photonics, actuation, sensing, and biotechnology. Here, recent advances in functional liquid crystals based on polymers, supramolecular complexes, gels, colloids, and inorganic-based hybrids are reviewed, from design strategies to functionalization of these materials and interfaces. New insights into liquid crystals provided by significant progress in advanced measurements and computational simulations, which enhance new design and functionalization of liquid-crystalline materials, are also discussed.

Mechano-Nanoarchitectonics: Design and Function

Mechanical stimuli have rather ambiguous and less-specific features among various physical stimuli, but most materials exhibit a certain level of responses upon mechanical inputs. Unexplored sciences remain in mechanical responding systems as one of the frontiers of materials science. Nanoarchitectonics approaches for mechanically responding materials are discussed as mechano-nanoarchitectonics in this review article. Recent approaches on molecular and materials systems with mechanical response capabilities are first exemplified with two viewpoints: i) mechanical control of supramolecular assemblies and materials and ii) mechanical control and evaluation of atom/molecular level structures. In the following sections, special attentions on interfacial environments for mechano-nanoarchitectonics are emphasized. The section entitled iii) Mechanical Control of Molecular System at Dynamic Interface describes coupling of macroscopic mechanical forces and molecular-level phenomena. Delicate mechanical forces can be applied to functional molecules embedded at the air-water interface where operation of molecular machines and tuning of molecular receptors upon macroscopic mechanical actions are discussed. Finally, the important role of the interfacial media are further extended to the control of living cells as described in the section entitled iv) Mechanical Control of Biosystems. Pioneering approaches on cell fate regulations at liquid-liquid interfaces are discussed in addition to well-known mechanobiology.

Biomimetic and Biological Nanoarchitectonics

A post-nanotechnology concept has been assigned to an emerging concept, nanoarchitectonics. Nanoarchitectonics aims to establish a discipline in which functional materials are fabricated from nano-scale components such as atoms, molecules, and nanomaterials using various techniques. Nanoarchitectonics opens ways to form a more unified paradigm by integrating nanotechnology with organic chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, material chemistry, microfabrication technology, and biotechnology. On the other hand, biological systems consist of rational organization of constituent molecules. Their structures have highly asymmetric and hierarchical features that allow for chained functional coordination, signal amplification, and vector-like energy and signal flow. The process of nanoarchitectonics is based on the premise of combining several different processes, which makes it easier to obtain a hierarchical structure. Therefore, nanoarchitectonics is a more suitable methodology for creating highly functional systems based on structural asymmetry and hierarchy like biosystems. The creation of functional materials by nanoarchitectonics is somewhat similar to the creation of functional systems in biological systems. It can be said that the goal of nanoarchitectonics is to create highly functional systems similar to those found in biological systems. This review article summarizes the synthesis of biomimetic and biological molecules and their functional structure formation from various viewpoints, from the molecular level to the cellular level. Several recent examples are arranged and categorized to illustrate such a trend with sections of (i) synthetic nanoarchitectonics for bio-related units, (ii) self-assembly nanoarchitectonics with bio-related units, (iii) nanoarchitectonics with nucleic acids, (iv) nanoarchitectonics with peptides, (v) nanoarchitectonics with proteins, and (vi) bio-related nanoarchitectonics in conjugation with materials.

Material Evolution with Nanotechnology, Nanoarchitectonics, and Materials Informatics: What will be the Next Paradigm Shift in Nanoporous Materials?

Materials science and chemistry have played a central and significant role in advancing society. With the shift toward sustainable living, it is anticipated that the development of functional materials will continue to be vital for sustaining life on our planet. In the recent decades, rapid progress has been made in materials science and chemistry owing to the advances in experimental, analytical, and computational methods, thereby producing several novel and useful materials. However, most problems in material development are highly complex. Here, the best strategy for the development of functional materials via the implementation of three key concepts is discussed: nanotechnology as a game changer, nanoarchitectonics as an integrator, and materials informatics as a super-accelerator. Discussions from conceptual viewpoints and example recent developments, chiefly focused on nanoporous materials, are presented. It is anticipated that coupling these three strategies together will open advanced routes for the swift design and exploratory search of functional materials truly useful for solving real-world problems. These novel strategies will result in the evolution of nanoporous functional materials.

Hysteresis Nanoarchitectonics with Chiral Gel Fibers and Achiral Gold Nanospheres for Reversible Chiral Inversion

Intelligent control over the handedness of circular dichroism (CD) is of special significance in self-organized biological and artificial systems. Herein, we report a chiral organic molecule (R1) containing a disulfide unit self-assembles into M-type helical fibers gels, which undergoes chirality inversion by incorporating gold nanospheres due to the formation of Au-S bonds between R1 and gold nanospheres. Upon heating at 80oC, the aggregation of gold nanospheres results in a disappearance of the Au-S bond, allowing the reversible switching back to M-type helical fibers. The original chirality of M-type fibers could also be retained by adding anisotropic gold nanorods. A series of characterization methods, involving CD, Raman, Infrared spectroscopy, electric microscopy, and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements were used to investigate the mechanism of chiral evolutions. Our results provide a facile way of fabricating hysteresis nanoarchitectonics to achieve dynamic supramolecular chirality using inorganic metallic nanoparticles.

Porous carbon nanoarchitectonics for the environment: detection and adsorption

As a post-nanotechnology concept, nanoarchitectonics has emerged from the 20th century to the 21st century. This review summarizes the recent progress in the field of metal-free porous carbon nanoarchitectonics.

Regulation of stem cell fate and function by using bioactive materials with nanoarchitectonics for regenerative medicine

Nanoarchitectonics has emerged as a post-nanotechnology concept. As one of the applications of nanoarchitectonics, this review paper discusses the control of stem cell fate and function as an important issue. For hybrid nanoarchitectonics involving living cells, it is crucial to understand how biomaterials and their nanoarchitected structures regulate behaviours and fates of stem cells. In this review, biomaterials for the regulation of stem cell fate are firstly discussed. Besides multipotent differentiation, immunomodulation is an important biological function of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). MSCs can modulate immune cells to treat multiple immune- and inflammation-mediated diseases. The following sections summarize the recent advances of the regulation of the immunomodulatory functions of MSCs by biophysical signals. In the third part, we discussed how biomaterials direct the self-organization of pluripotent stem cells for organoid. Bioactive materials are constructed which mimic the biophysical cues of in vivo microenvironment such as elasticity, viscoelasticity, biodegradation, fluidity, topography, cell geometry, and etc. Stem cells interpret these biophysical cues by different cytoskeletal forces. The different cytoskeletal forces lead to substantial transcription and protein expression, which affect stem cell fate and function. Regulations of stem cells could not be utilized only for tissue repair and regenerative medicine but also potentially for production of advanced materials systems. Materials nanoarchitectonics with integration of stem cells and related biological substances would have high impacts in science and technology of advanced materials.

There is still plenty of room for layer-by-layer assembly for constructing nanoarchitectonics-based materials and devices

Nanoarchitectonics approaches can produce functional materials from tiny units through combination of various processes including atom/molecular manipulation, chemical conversion, self-assembly/self-organization, microfabrication, and bio-inspired procedures. Existing fabrication approaches can be regarded as fitting into the same concept. In particular, the so-called layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly method has huge potential for preparing applicable materials with a great variety of assembling mechanisms. LbL assembly is a multistep process where different components can be organized in planned sequences while simple alignment options provide access to superstructures, for example helical structures, and anisotropies which are important aspects of nanoarchitectonics. In this article, newly-featured examples are extracted from the literature on LbL assembly discussing trends for composite functional materials according to (i) principles and techniques, (ii) composite materials, and (iii) applications. We present our opinion on the present trends, and the prospects of LbL assembly. While this method has already reached a certain maturity, there is still plenty of room for expanding its usefulness for the fabrication of nanoarchitectonics-based materials and devices.

Membranes for Cation Transport Based on Dendronized Poly(epichlorohydrin-co-ethylene oxide). Part 1: The Effect of Dendron Amount and Column Orientation on Copolymer Mobility

Dendronized polyethers give rise to columnar LC structures which can successfully act as cation transport materials. Therefore, we prepared two different materials, based on Poly(epichlorohydrin-co-ethylene oxide) (PECH-co-EO) grafted with methyl 3,4,5-tris[4-(n-dodecan-1-yloxy)benzyloxy] benzoate, containing 20% or 40% modified units, respectively. The obtained polymers were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy between crossed polars (POM) and compared to the unmodified PECH-co-EO. In order to reach efficient transport properties, homeotropically oriented membranes were prepared by a fine-tuned thermal annealing treatment and were subsequently investigated by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and dielectric thermal analysis (DETA). We found that the presence of the dendrons induces a main chain partial crystallization of the polyether chain and coherently increases the polymer Tg. This effect is more evident in the oriented membranes. As for copolymer orientation upon annealing, the cooling rate and the annealing temperature were the most crucial factors. DMTA and DETA confirmed that grafting with the dendron strongly hinders copolymer motions, but did not show great differences between unoriented and oriented membranes, regardless of the amount of dendrons.

Unveiling the Role of Hydrogen Bonds in Luminescent N-Annulated Perylene Liquid Crystals

We report the liquid‐crystalline (LC) and luminescent properties of a series of N‐annulated perylenes (1–4) in whose molecular structures amide and ester groups alternate. We found that the LC properties of these compounds not only depend on the number of hydrogen‐bonding units, but also on the relative position of the amide linkers in the molecule. The absence of amide groups in compound 1 leads to no LC properties, whereas four amide groups induce the formation of a wide temperature range columnar hexagonal phase in compound 4. Remarkably, compound 3, with two amide groups in the inner part of the structure, stabilizes the columnar LC phases better than its structural isomer 2, with the amide groups in the outer part of the molecule. Similarly, we found that only compounds 1 and 2, which have no hydrogen bonding units in the inner part of the molecule, exhibit luminescence vapochromism upon exposure to organic solvent vapors.

Recent advances in dopamine-based materials constructed via one-pot co-assembly strategy

Dopamine-based materials have attracted widespread interest due to the outstanding physicochemical and biological properties. Since the first report on polydopamine (PDA) films, great efforts have been devoted to develop new fabrication strategies for obtaining novel nanostructures and desirable properties. Among them, one-pot co-assembly strategy offers a unique pathway for integrating multiple properties and functions into dopamine-based platform in a single simultaneous co-deposition step. This review focuses on the state of the art development of one-pot multicomponent self-assembly of dopamine-based materials and summarizes various single-step co-deposition approaches, including PDA-assisted adaptive encapsulation, co-assembly of dopamine with other molecules through non-covalent interactions or covalent interactions. Moreover, emerging applications of dopamine-based materials in the fields ranging from sensing, cancer therapy, catalysis, oil/water separation to antifouling are outlined. In addition, some critical remaining challenges and opportunities are discussed to pave the way towards the rational design and applications of dopamine-based materials.

A Layered Polydiacetylene Containing Hydrogen-Bonding 4,4'-Bipyridyl Guests: Reversible Color Changes with a Wide-Range Temperature Response

Layered organic polymers have intercalation capabilities and dynamic properties. In classical intercalation chemistry, the interlayer guests are intercalated in the host layers via electrostatic interaction. The present work shows the organic layered materials with the host-guest interlayer interaction via hydrogen bond. Polydiacetylene (PDA) exhibits color changes from blue to red with the application of external stimuli, such as thermal and mechanical stresses. Here we report on a layered PDA containing 4,4'-bipyridyl in the interlayer space as a hydrogen-bonding guest. Whereas the layered PDA without interlayer guest shows the color transition at 65 °C, gradual color changes with two-stage reversibility are observed in the temperature range of -20-240 °C by the introduction of the hydrogen-bonding guest. The weaker interlayer interaction via the hydrogen bond promotes the dynamic motion directing the thermoresponsive color changes in a wide temperature range.

Self-healing and shape memory functions exhibited by supramolecular liquid-crystalline networks formed by combination of hydrogen bonding interactions and coordination bonding

We here report a new approach to develop self-healing shape memory supramolecular liquid-crystalline (LC) networks through self-assembly of molecular building blocks via combination of hydrogen bonding and coordination bonding. We have designed and synthesized supramolecular LC polymers and networks based on the complexation of a forklike mesogenic ligand with Ag+ ions and carboxylic acids. Unidirectionally aligned fibers and free-standing films forming layered LC nanostructures have been obtained for the supramolecular LC networks. We have found that hybrid supramolecular LC networks formed through metal-ligand interactions and hydrogen bonding exhibit both self-healing properties and shape memory functions, while hydrogen-bonded LC networks only show self-healing properties. The combination of hydrogen bonds and metal-ligand interactions allows the tuning of intermolecular interactions and self-assembled structures, leading to the formation of the dynamic supramolecular LC materials. The new material design presented here has potential for the development of smart LC materials and functional LC membranes with tunable responsiveness.

Alignment Layer of Liquid Crystal Using Plant-Based Isoeugenol-Substituted Polystyrene

We synthesized a series of renewable and plant-based isoeugenol-substituted polystyrenes (PIEU#, # = 100, 80, 60, 40, and 20, where # is the molar percent content of isoeugenol moiety), using polymer modification reactions to study their liquid crystal (LC) alignment behavior. In general, the LC cells fabricated using polymer film with a higher molar content of isoeugenol side groups showed vertical LC alignment behavior. This alignment behavior was well related to the surface energy value of the polymer layer. For example, vertical alignments were observed when the polar surface energy value of the polymer was smaller than approximately 3.59 mJ/m2, generated by the nonpolar isoeugenol moiety with long and bulky carbon groups. Good alignment stability at 100 °C and under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation of 15 J/cm2 was observed for the LC cells fabricated using PIEU100 as a LC alignment layer. Therefore, renewable isoeugenol-based materials can be used to produce an eco-friendly vertical LC alignment system.
