Abstract
Photochemical reactions taking place between 1,2-diketones and silyl ketene acetals and their excited state reaction mechanisms have been explored. Irradiation of benzene, acetone, or acetonitrile solutions containing 1,2-diketones and silyl ketene acetals is observed to promote formation of 1,4-dioxenes, resulting from [4 + 2]-cycloaddition, oxetanes, arising by Paterno-Buchi processes, and beta-hydroxy-gamma-ketoesters, generated by SET-promoted Claisen-type condensation. These competitive pathways leading from the excited states of the 1,2-diketones to these products are influenced by solvent polarity and the nature of the silyl ketene acetal and 1,2-diketone. The Claisen-type condensation process, following an SET desilylation pathway and predominating when the photoreactions are carried out in the polar solvent acetonitrile, represents an efficient method to prepare a variety of diversely substituted beta-hydoxy-gamma-ketoesters.

Abstract
The addition of unstabilized carbonyl nucleophiles to allyl-metal fragments still represents a challenge for generating stereoselectively tertiary (and quaternary) stereogenic centers. In this context, the decarboxylative Carroll rearrangement of secondary and tertiary allyl β-ketoesters is particularly interesting since chiral γ,δ-unsaturated ketones are obtained. Herein, we show that CpRu half-sandwich complexes can, in the presence of selected enantiopure diimine ligands, catalyze this transformation and afford complete conversions and decent level of enantiomeric excess. Zwitterionic adducts of a hexacoordinated phosphorus anion and CpRu moieties were also associated and shown to generate air-, moisture-, and microwave-stable catalysts that can be readily purified and recycled. Carroll rearrangements of allylic β-ketoesters performed with these zwitterionic species occur with better regio- and enantioselectivity.

Abstract
Ruthenium(II) complexes containing the pentamethylcyclopentadienyl ligand efficiently perform the activation of allylic carbonates and halides to generate cationic and dicationic ruthenium(IV) complexes. This activation has been transferred as a key step to the catalytic allylation of nucleophiles. The structural and electronic properties of the allylic moieties lead to the regioselective formation of chiral products resulting from nucleophilic addition to their most substituted terminus. The catalytic activity of various Ru(Cp*) precatalysts in several allylic substitutions by C and O nucleophiles will be presented. The enantioselective version that has been demonstrated by using optically pure bisoxazoline ligands will also be discussed.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] Bipyridyl(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)ruthenium chloride is an efficient catalyst for the formal [3,3] rearrangement of allyl beta-ketoesters. The mechanism of the transformation involves formation of pi-allyl ruthenium intermediates, which are selectively attacked at the more substituted allyl terminus by freely diffusing enolates. Decarboxylation of beta-ketocarboxylates allows generation of enolates under extremely mild conditions.
