Stability and conformation of the complexes of riboflavin with aromatic hydroxy compounds in an aqueous medium

Overall equilibrium constants K' for the formation of molecular complexes of riboflavin with the conjugate forms of different aromatic hydroxy compounds are greater in magnitude than those involving the protonated forms of the hydroxy compounds. There is good agreement between the K(B) values determined by using absorption and emission methods. Based on the magnitude of K(B), it is possible to differentiate between the donor capacities of the hydroxy compounds in the charge transfer complexes with riboflavin. Molecular modeling studies indicate stacking interactions for all the systems in an aqueous medium.

Effect of a mixture of caffeine and nicotinamide on the solubility of vitamin (B2) in aqueous solution

The effect of caffeine (CAF) and nicotinamide (NMD) on the solubility of a vitamin B2 derivative (FMN) has been evaluated for mixtures containing either a single hydrotrope (CAF or NMD) or the two hydrotropes simultaneously. A model for analysis of ternary systems, which takes into account all possible complexes between the molecules, has been developed and tested with experimental NMR data on the three-component mixture FMN-CAF-NMD. The results indicate that special attention should be given to the concentration of a hydrotropic agent used to enhance the solubility of a particular drug. A decrease in the efficacy of solubility of the vitamin on addition of large amounts of hydrotropic agent is expected in the two-component systems due to the increased proportion of self-association of the hydrotrope. It is found that a mixture of two hydrotropic agents leads to an increase in the solubility of the vitamin in three-component compared to the two-component system. Rather than using just one hydrotropic agent, it is proposed that a strategy for optimising the solubility of aromatic drugs is to use a mixture of hydrotropic agents.

Studies on the riboflavin-resorcinol interaction in an aqueous medium and its pH dependence

The equilibrium constants, K', for the formation of the molecular association complex between riboflavin and resorcinol in the pH range 6-8 were found to be in the range 5-25 mol(-1)dm(3) by difference absorption spectroscopy. The equilibrium constants from emission spectroscopy were estimated to be in the range 38-55 mol(-1)dm(3) over the same pH range. Both sets of K' show a remarkable dependence on pH. The equilibrium constants K(A) and K(B) describing the interaction of riboflavin with neutral and ionic forms of resorcinol, respectively, obtained by resolving K', shows that K(B) is much greater than K(A). Molecular modeling studies suggest a stacked conformation of the two components in the complexed form. The interaction energies obtained from modeling studies also suggest a stronger interaction between the ionic form of resorcinol and riboflavin.

Photoreaction of aromatic compounds at alpha-FeOOH/H2O interface in the presence of H2O2: evidence for organic-goethite surface complex formation

The photoreactions of aromatic compounds were investigated in aqueous dispersions of alpha-FeOOH(goethite)/H(2)O(2) at neutral pHs. It was found that aromatic compounds could undergo rapid decomposition and mineralization (even to 100% yield) in the presence of both alpha-FeOOH and H(2)O(2) under UV irradiation, and the degradation rates of the organics were related to their sorption ability of the surface of alpha-FeOOH and were in the following order: salicylic acid approximately m-hydroxylbenzoic acid>p-hydroxylbenzoic acid approximately benzoic acid>p-biphthalic acid>phenol>benzenesulfonic acid. The interactions of salicylic acid and benzenesulfonic acid with goethite were examined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and electron spin resonance (ESR) was applied to detect the intermediate radicals formed in the photoreaction. The effect of pH and foreign ligands on the degradation of salicylic acid, decomposition of H(2)O(2), and formation of dissolved iron was also examined.
