High-Precision and Rapid Direct Laser Writing Using a Liquid Two-Photon Polymerization Initiator

Two-photon polymerization based direct laser writing (DLW) is an emerging micronano 3D fabrication technology wherein two-photon initiators (TPIs) are a key component in photoresists. Upon exposure to a femtosecond laser, TPIs can trigger the polymerization reaction, leading to the solidification of photoresists. In other words, TPIs directly determine the rate of polymerization, physicochemical properties of polymers, and even the photolithography feature size. However, they generally exhibit extremely poor solubility in photoresist systems, severely inhibiting their application in DLW. To break through this bottleneck, we propose a strategy to prepare TPIs as liquids via molecular design. The maximum weight fraction of the as-prepared liquid TPI in photoresist significantly increases to 2.0 wt %, which is several times higher than that of commercial 7-diethylamino-3-thenoylcoumarin (DETC). Meanwhile, this liquid TPI also exhibits an excellent absorption cross section (64 GM), allowing it to absorb femtosecond laser efficiently and generate abundant active species to initiate polymerization. Remarkably, the respective minimum feature sizes of line arrays and suspended lines are 47 and 20 nm, which are comparable to that of the-state-of-the-art electron beam lithography. Besides, the liquid TPI can be utilized to fabricate various high-quality 3D microstructures and manufacture large-area 2D devices at a considerable writing speed (1.045 m s^-1). Therefore, the liquid TPI would be one of the promising initiators for micronano fabrication technology and pave the way for future development of DLW.

A turn-off fluorescence probe based on terpyridine for pH monitoring

A new pH-dependent fluorescence probe 2,8-bis((E)-4-([2,2':6',2″-terpyridin]-4'-yl)styryl)-6H,12H-5,11-methanodibenzo[b,f][1,5]diazocine (TBPTP) based on Tröger's base (TB) bound to terpyridine was designed and synthesized. Photophysical properties and titration experiments of TBPTP were investigated by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. TBPTP exhibited high sensitivity in an acidic environment with the working pH range 7.2-2.5, especially having a good liner response to pH changes in the range 2.5-4.3, which suggested that TBPTP is a good candidate for pH monitoring.

(Ar-tpy)RuII(ACN)3: A Water-Soluble Catalyst for Aldehyde Amidation, Olefin Oxo-Scissoring, and Alkyne Oxygenation

The synthetic chemists always look for developing new catalysts, sustainable catalysis, and their applications in various organic transformations. Herein, we report a new class of water-soluble complexes, (Ar-tpy)Ru^II(ACN)₃, utilizing designed terpyridines possessing electron-donating and -withdrawing aromatic residues for tuning the catalytic activity of the Ru(II) complex. These complexes displayed excellent catalytic activity for several oxidative organic transformations including late-stage C-H functionalization of aldehydes with NH₂OR to valuable primary amides in nonconventional aqueous media with excellent yield. Its diverse catalytic power was established for direct oxo-scissoring of a wide range of alkenes to furnish aldehydes and/or ketones in high yield using a low catalyst loading in the water. Its smart catalytic activity under mild conditions was validated for dioxygenation of alkynes to highly demanding labile synthons, 1,2-diketones, and/or acids. This general and sustainable catalysis was successfully employed on sugar-based substrates to obtain the chiral amides, aldehydes, and labile 1,2-diketones. The catalyst is recovered and reused with a moderate turnover. The proposed mechanistic pathway is supported by isolation of the intermediates and their characterization. This multifaceted sustainable catalysis is a unique tool, especially for late-stage functionalization, to furnish the targeted compounds through frequently used amidation and oxygenation processes in the academia and industry.

Theoretical investigation of the broad one-photon absorption line-shape of a flexible symmetric carbazole derivative

The one-photon absorption spectrum of a carbazole derivative has been studied by employing density functional response theory combined with a mixed quantum/classical approach to simulate the spectral shape.

Novel luminescent soft materials of terpyridine-containing ionic liquids and europium(III)

Herein, we describe novel luminescent soft materials via reaction of Eu(3+)-coordinated carboxyl functionalized ionic liquids with terpyridine-functionalized imidazolium salts that are built from an imidazolium ring substituted on one side with a terpyridine derivative and, on the opposite side, a paraffin chain of various lengths. The obtained materials are either pastelike substances or viscous fluids, depending on the anions of the carboxyl functionalized ionic liquids. The soft luminescent materials were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry (TG), and luminescence spectroscopy. The soft materials show bright red emission irradiated with UV light, because of the energy transfer from terpyridine-functionalized imidazolium salts to the Eu(3+) ions. The absolute quantum yields of the materials were determined and the energy transfer efficiency was estimated according to the reported method.

Dynamic disorder in the crystal structure of an organic semiconductor: an unusual phase transition involving the heat capacity

(E,E)-1-[2-(4-Nitrophenyl)ethenyl]-4-[2-(2,4-dimethoxyphenyl)ethenyl]benzene was characterised by X-ray diffraction and shown to be dynamically disordered at room temperature. The structure was re-determined over a range of temperatures to infer the thermodynamic parameters related to this disorder. A phase transition of third order according to the Ehrenfest classification scheme was discovered. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimentally observed phase transition of formal third order. It can be explained by the involvement of long-range lattice vibrations.
