Nickel-Catalyzed Selective C(sp2 )-F Bond Alkylation of Industrially Relevant Hydrofluoroolefin HFO-1234yf

The selective transition-metal catalyzed C-F bond functionalization of inexpensive industrial fluorochemicals represents one of the most attractive approaches to valuable fluorinated compounds. However, the selective C(sp2 )-F bond carbofunctionalization of refrigerant hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) remains challenging. Here, we report a nickel-catalyzed selective C(sp2 )-F bond alkylation of HFO-1234yf with alkylzinc reagents. The resulting 2-trifluoromethylalkenes can serve as a versatile synthon for diversified transformations, including the anti-Markovnikov type hydroalkylation and the synthesis of bioactive molecule analogues. Mechanistic studies reveal that lithium salt is essential to promote the oxidative addition of Ni0 (Ln ) to the C-F bond; the less electron-rich N-based ligands, such as bipyridine and pyridine-oxazoline, feature comparable or even higher oxidative addition rates than the electron-rich phosphine ligands; the strong σ-donating phosphine ligands, such as PMe3 , are detrimental to transmetallation, but the less electron-rich and bulky N-based ligands, such as pyridine-oxazoline, facilitate transmetallation and reductive elimination to form the final product.

Highly Selective C-F Bond Functionalization of Tetrasubstituted gem-Difluoroalkenes and Trisubstituted Monofluoroalkenes Using Grignard Reagents

We herein describe selective C-F bond functionalizations of tetrasubstituted gem-difluoroalkenes and trisubstituted monofluoroalkenes using Grignard reagents without the transition metal catalyst. β,β-Difluoroacrylates react with Grignard reagents under mild conditions to afford tetrasubstituted (E)-β-monofluoroacrylates. Experimental and computational studies revealed that the selectivity stems from the intrinsic reactivity difference between the (E)- and (Z)-isomers toward excess Grignard reagent, which leads to the resolution of the two products.

Highly Active Cross-Metathesis of Tetrafluoroethylene with a Seven-Membered N-Heterocyclic-Carbene-Ruthenium Catalyst

A drastic increase in catalyst turnover number (TON) was accomplished in the cross-metathesis of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) and vinyl ethers. Under a continuous flow of TFE, catalyst Ru7, which contains a seven-membered N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand, reached a TON of 4100; this is 2 orders of magnitude higher than the highest hitherto reported value. Mechanistic studies revealed that the expanded NHC successfully destabilizes the stable intermediates with a difluorocarbene structure, which strongly promotes the reaction.

Pd/Cu-Catalyzed Defluorinative Carbonylative Coupling of Aryl Iodides and gem-Difluoroalkenes: Efficient Synthesis of α-Fluorochalcones

An unprecedented and challenging defluorinative carbonylation was achieved. Enabled by a Pd/Cu cooperative catalyst system, the first example of defluorinative carbonylative coupling has been established. With gem-difluoroalkenes and aryl iodides as the substrates, this methodology offers flexible and facile access to privileged α-fluorochalcones under mild reaction conditions in moderate-to-excellent yields. Mechanistic studies indicated transmetalation between palladium and copper intermediates as a crucial step of the catalytic cycle.

Direct Transformation of Tetrafluoroethylene to Trifluorovinylzinc via sp2 C-F Bond Activation

Trifluorovinylzinc is a common synthetic intermediate for trifluorovinyl derivatives, including α,β,β-trifluorostyrenes and hexafluorobutadiene. Here, we report a novel synthetic approach for the formation of trifluorovinylzinc chloride via a C-F bond activation of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), which is an industrially cost-effective bulk feedstock with a negligible GWP. The present system provides a practical synthetic route to various trifluorovinyl derivatives with very low energy consumption.

Selective Catalytic Formation of Cross-Tetramers from Tetrafluoroethylene, Ethylene, Alkynes, and Aldehydes via Nickelacycles as Key Reaction Intermediates

In the presence of a catalytic amount of Ni(cod)₂ (cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) and PCy₃ (Cy = cyclohexyl), the cross-tetramerization of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), ethylene, alkynes, and aldehydes leads to a variety of fluorine-containing enone derivatives. This reaction is the first example of a highly selective cross-tetramerization between four different unsaturated compounds. Stoichiometric reactions revealed that the present reaction involves partially fluorinated five- and seven-membered nickelacycles as key reaction intermediates.

Nickel-Catalyzed Formation of 1,3-Dienes via a Highly Selective Cross-Tetramerization of Tetrafluoroethylene, Styrenes, Alkynes, and Ethylene

In the presence of a catalytic amount of Ni(cod)₂ (cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) and PCy₃ (Cy = cyclohexyl), the cross-tetramerization of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), alkynes, and ethylene occurred in a highly selective manner to afford a variety of 1,3-dienes with a 3,3,4,4-tetrafluorobutyl chain. In addition, a Ni(0)-catalyzed cross-tetramerization of TFE, alkynes, ethylene, and styrenes was developed. These catalytic reactions might proceed via partially fluorinated five- and seven-membered nickelacycle key intermediates.
