Abstract
A set of ruthenium(II)-protic-N-heterocyclic carbene complexes, [Ru(NNCH )(PPh3 )2 (X)]Cl (1, X=Cl and 2, X=H) and their deprotonated forms [Ru(NNC)(PPh3 )2 (X)] (1', X=Cl and 2', X=H), in which NNC is a new unsymmetrical pincer ligand, are reported. The four complexes are interconvertible by simple acid-base chemistry. The combined theoretical and spectroscopic investigations indicate charge segregation in anionic-NHC complexes (1' and 2') and can be described from a Lewis pair perspective. The chemical reactivity of deprotonated complex 1' shows cooperative small molecule activation. Complex 1' activates H-H bond of hydrogen, C(sp3 )-I bond of iodomethane, and C(sp)-H bond of phenylacetylene. The activation of CO2 using anionic NHC complex 1' at moderate temperature and ambient pressure and subsequent conversion to formate is also described. All the new compounds have been characterized using ESI-MS, 1 H, 13 C, and 31 P NMR spectroscopy. Molecular structures of 1, 2, and 2' have also been determined with single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The cooperative small molecule activation perspective broadens the scope of potential applications of anionic-NHC complexes in small molecule activation, including the conversion of carbon dioxide to formate, a much sought after reaction in the renewable energy and sustainable development domains.

Abstract
Abstract
The reactions of N-alkyl-N′-picolyl-benzimidazolium bromides or N,N′-dipicolyl-benzimidazolium bromide with silver oxide yielded the silver dicarbene complexes of the type [Ag(NHC)2][AgBr2] 1–4 (NHC = picoline-functionalized benzimidazolin-2-ylidene). The silver complexes 1–4 have been used in carbene transfer reactions to yield the gold(I) complexes of the type [AuCl(NHC)] 5–8 in good yields. A halide exchange at the metal center of complexes 5–8 with lithium bromide yielded the gold bromide complexes 9–12. Finally, the oxidation of the gold(I) centers in complexes 9–12 with elemental bromine gave the gold(III) complexes of the type [AuBr3(NHC)] 13–16. Molecular structures of selected Au(I) and Au(III) complexes have been determined by X-ray diffraction studies.

Abstract
Abstract
Reaction of 8-bromo-7-ethyl-3-methylxanthine 1 with zerovalent group 10 metal complexes gave via an oxidative addition of the C–Br bond the neutral complexes trans-[2] (M = Pd) and trans-[3] (M = Pt) bearing a theobromine-derived azolato ligand. While the oxidative addition to [Pd0(PPh3)4] gave exclusively trans-[2], the reaction with the more substitution-inert [Pt0(PPh3)4] yielded after 1 day the kinetic product cis-[3], which was converted under heating for a total of 3 days completely into the thermodynamically more stable complex trans-[3]. Treatment of trans-[2], trans-[3] or the mixture of cis-/trans-[3] with the proton source HBF4⋅Et2O led to complexes trans-[4]BF4, trans-[5]BF4 and a mixture of cis/trans-[5]BF4 with retention of the original ratio of cis to trans, respectively. The molecular structures of the azolato complexes trans-[2] and trans-[3] and of the theobromine derived pNHC complexes trans-[4]BF4 and trans-[5]BF4 have been determined by X-ray diffraction studies.

Abstract
The IrIII hydrido complexes [1] and [2] have been synthesized by the regioselective oxidative addition of the N7-H bond of 8-halogenotheophyllines to [IrCl(coe)2]2 in the presence of PPh3. The use of dppf in this reaction yielded the bimetallic IrIII/FeII hydrido complexes [3] and [4]. X-ray diffraction studies confirmed that complexes [1]-[4] feature a theophyllinato ligand coordinated to the metal center in the rarely observed, chelating fashion via the N7 and O1 atoms. In addition, 8-bromoadenine reacts with [IrCl(coe)2]2 in the presence of PPh3 to form the IrIII hydrido complex [5] which features one anionic 8-bromoadeninato and one neutral 8-bromoadenine ligand linked by an intramolecular hydrogen bond. Complex [5] was characterized by high-resolution mass spectrometry and an X-ray diffraction analysis but could not be analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy because of its low solubility.

Abstract
A robust magnetic nanoparticle-supported N-heterocyclic carbene-palladacycle has been readily synthesized by directly anchoring the structural defined acenaphthoimidazolylidene palladacycle with a long tail on magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), and functioned as a solid molecular catalyst and exhibited extremely high catalytic activity towards the challenging Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions between less-studied heterocyclic 9-chloroacridine and diverse boronic acids. Remarkably, the catalyst could be used 5 times without obvious loss of activity highlighting the efficiency of our strategy of immobilization of previledged catalysts.

Abstract
A facile, one pot synthesis of a coordinatively unsaturated ruthenium complex supported by a tripodal, protic bis(N-heterocyclic carbene) phosphine ligand is presented. A number of coordination complexes were discovered en route during this synthesis, revealing some of the unique aspects of complexes ligated by this type of tridentate, protic bis(NHC) ligand. Through a combination of 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction, we reveal the intermediacy of phosphine-ligated bisimidazole complexes and show that abstraction of inner-sphere halide ions facilitates conversion to the desired tridentate bis(NHC) coordination mode. Ultimately the use of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone is shown to enable the use of the extreme temperatures needed to facilitate the direct, thermally activated tautomerization reaction that gives rise to the bis(NHC) motif.

Abstract
This article discusses the concept of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) equipped with more than one functional moiety, which allows using these NHCs for multiple purposes. A pioneering example for such NHCs is N-phosphine oxide-substituted imidazolylidenes (PoxIms), and their synthesis and strategic use are highlighted. The utility of PoxIms by far exceeds the conventional use as multidentate ligands for metal complexes on account of the synergetic functions of the carbene and the N-phosphine oxide group(s).

Abstract
A series of robust N-heterocyclic carbene palladacycles have been successfully developed. These showed high catalytic activity and selectivity toward the challenging amination of N-heteroaryl chlorides. Different primary and secondary amines were fully compatible with this catalytic system. Remarkably, no double amination products could be detected when primary amines were utilized in our catalytic transformation. Furthermore, the protocol has been successfully extended to synthesize rosiglitazone, a clinical drug for diabetes mellitus, highlighting its potential pharmaceutical feasibility.

Abstract
A variety of half-sandwich iron(ii) complexes with diprotic acyclic diaminocarbene ligands (pADCs) have been obtained by reaction of the cationic complexes [Fe(Cp)(CO)2(CNR)]+ and [Fe(Cp)(CO)(CNR)2]+ with methylamine, and their acid-base behaviour was studied, revealing an easy reversible deprotonation reaction of both N-H moieties of the carbene ligands. The deprotonation process is frequently followed by a nucleophilic attack of the nitrogen atom on a vicinal carbonyl or isocyanide ligand, affording the corresponding metallacycles. Metalation of one or two N-H groups of the pADC ligands can be accomplished by reaction of the carbene complexes with either [AuCl(PPh3)] or [Ru(p-cym)Cl2]2 in the presence of KOH or LiHMDS as deprotonating agents. A number of Fe(ii)/Au(i) and Fe(ii)/Ru(ii) heterometallic complexes have been prepared in this way, some of them formally containing unique metalla-N-heterocyclic carbene ligands.

Abstract
The reaction of platinum complex trans-[1] bearing an N,NEt-imidazolide ligand with bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe) or bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)ethane (dchpe) yields the dinuclear MIC complexes [2]I2 or the mononuclear MIC complex [3]I, respectively. Whereas dinuclear [2]I2 does not react with elemental hydrogen, the mononuclear complex [3]I splits elemental hydrogen under mild reaction conditions with formation of hydride complex [4]I and N-ethylimidazole. Dinuclear complex [3]I activates CS2 with formation of complex [5]I featuring the CS2 molecule bound through the carbon atom to the MIC nitrogen atom and one sulfur atom coordinating to the platinum center.

Abstract
It is well-recognized that N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have provided a new dimension to the design of homogeneous catalysts. Part of the success of this type of ligands resides in the limitless access to a variety of topologies with tuned electronic properties, but also in the ability of a family of NHCs that are able to adapt their properties to the specific requirements of individual catalytic transformations. The term "smart" is used here to refer to switchable, multifunctional, adaptable, or tunable ligands and, in general, to all those ligands that are able to modify their steric or electronic properties to fulfill the requirements of a defined catalytic reaction. The purpose of this review is to comprehensively describe all types of smart NHC ligands by focusing attention on the catalytically relevant ligand-based reactivity.

Abstract
Abstract
Reaction of 2-chloro-N-(methoxymethyl)benzimidazole 1 with zerovalent group 10 metal complexes in the presence of an additional proton source yielded, via an oxidative addition of the C2–Cl bond, complexes with a protic NH,NR-substituted (R=methoxymethyl) benzimidazolin-2-ylidene ligand. The oxidative addition of 1 to Ni0 and Pd0 complexes proceeded with the exclusive formation of the trans-configured complexes trans-[2]BF4 and trans-[3]BF4, respectively. Contrary to this observation, the reaction of 1 with a more substitution inert Pt0 complex leads, depending on the reaction temperature, to a mixture of cis-/trans-[4]BF4 or exclusively to trans-[4]BF4. The molecular structures of all three trans-configured complexes were determined.
