Photocatalytic Methanol Dehydrogenation Promoted Synergistically by Atomically Dispersed Pd and Clustered Pd

Supported metal in the form of single atoms, clusters, and particles can individually or jointly affect the activity of supported heterogeneous catalysts. While the individual contribution of the supported metal to the overall activity of supported photocatalysts has been identified, the joint activity of mixed metal species is overlooked because of their different photoelectric properties. Here, atomically dispersed Pd (Pd1) and Pd clusters are loaded onto CdS, serving as oxidation and reduction sites for methanol dehydrogenation. The Pd1 substitutes Cd2+, forming hole-trapping states for methanol oxidation and assisting the dispersion of photodeposited Pd clusters. Therefore, methanol dehydrogenation on CdS with supported Pd1 and Pd clusters exhibits the highest turnover frequency of 1.14 s-1 based on the Pd content and affords H2 and HCHO with a similar apparent quantum yield of 87 ± 1% at 452 nm under optimized reaction conditions. This work highlights the synergistic catalysis of supported metal for improved photocatalytic activity.

Tripodal Pd metallenes mediated by Nb2C MXenes for boosting alkynes semihydrogenation

2D metallene nanomaterials have spurred considerable attention in heterogeneous catalysis by virtue of sufficient unsaturated metal atoms, high specific surface area and surface strain. Nevertheless, the strong metallic bonding in nanoparticles aggravates the difficulty in the controllable regulation of the geometry of metallenes. Here we propose an efficient galvanic replacement strategy to construct Pd metallenes loaded on Nb₂C MXenes at room temperature, which is triggered by strong metal-support interaction based on MD simulations. The Pd metallenes feature a chair structure of six-membered ring with the coordination number of Pd as low as 3. Coverage-dependent kinetic analysis based on first-principles calculations reveals that the tripodal Pd metallenes promote the diffusion of alkene and inhibit its overhydrogenation. As a consequence, Pd/Nb₂C delivers an outstanding turnover frequency of 10372 h^-1 and a high selectivity of 96% at 25 ^oC in the semihydrogenation of alkynes without compromising the stability. This strategy is general and scalable considering the plentiful members of the MXene family, which can set a foundation for the design of novel supported-metallene catalysts for demanding transformations.

Hydrogen storage and stability properties of Pd-Pt solid-solution nanoparticles revealed via atomic and electronic structure

Bimetallic Pd_1−xPt_x solid-solution nanoparticles (NPs) display charging/discharging of hydrogen gas, which has relevance for fuel cell technologies; however, the constituent elements are immiscible in the bulk phase. We examined these material systems using high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption fine structure and hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques. Recent studies have demonstrated the hydrogen storage properties and catalytic activities of Pd-Pt alloys; however, comprehensive details of their structural and electronic functionality at the atomic scale have yet to be reported. Three-dimensional atomic-scale structure results obtained from the pair distribution function (PDF) and reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) methods suggest the formation of a highly disordered structure with a high cavity-volume-fraction for low-Pt content NPs. The NP conduction band features, as extracted from X-ray absorption near-edge spectra at the Pd and Pt L_III-edge, suggest that the Pd conduction band is filled by Pt valence electrons. This behaviour is consistent with observations of the hydrogen storage capacity of these NPs. The broadening of the valence band width and the down-shift of the d-band centre away from the Fermi level upon Pt substitution also provided evidence for enhanced stability of the hydride (ΔH) features of the Pd_1−xPt_x solid-solution NPs with a Pt content of 8-21 atomic percent.
