Monitoring of Hypochlorite Level in Fruits, Vegetables, and Dairy Products: A BODIPY-Based Fluorescent Probe for the Rapid and Highly Selective Detection of Hypochlorite

Hypochlorite/hypochlorous acid (ClO^-/HOCl), among the diverse reactive oxygen species, plays a vital role in various biological processes. Besides, ClO^- is widely known as a sanitizer for fruits, vegetables, and fresh-cut produce, killing bacteria and pathogens. However, excessive level of ClO^- can lead to the oxidation of biomolecules such as DNA, RNA, and proteins, threatening vital organs. Therefore, reliable and effective methods are of utmost importance to monitor trace amounts of ClO^-. In this work, a novel BODIPY-based fluorescent probe bearing thiophene and a malononitrile moiety (BOD-CN) was designed and constructed to efficiently detect ClO^-, which exhibited distinct features such as excellent selectivity, sensitivity (LOD = 83.3 nM), and rapid response (<30 s). Importantly, the probe successfully detected ClO^- in various spiked water, milk, vegetable, and fruit samples. In all, BOD-CN offers a clearly promising approach to describe the quality of ClO^--added dairy products, water, fresh vegetables, and fruits.

Triphenylamine-based small-molecule fluorescent probes

Ammonia with the three hydrogens substituted by phenyls is known as triphenylamine (TPA), and is one of the most useful compounds because of its vast practical applications. Chemists have produced thousands of TPA derivatives to date. Because of its biocompatibility and structural features, it has been widely used in the fields of molecular recognition, molecular imaging, materials chemistry, and also in biology and medical science. Its strong electron-donating ability encourages scientists to produce different types of probes for molecular recognition. This review is based on recent developments and advances in TPA-based small molecular fluorescent probes within the time period 2010-2021. This extensive review may expedite improvements in more advanced fluorescent probes for vast and stimulating applications in the future.

Colorimetric and fluorescent probes for real-time naked eye sensing of copper ion in solution and on paper substrate

In this paper, BT ((E)-2-(4-(4-(bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)styryl)-3-cyano-5,5-dimethylfuran-2(5H)-ylidene)malononitrile) with strong donor-π-acceptor structure was synthesized, which showed both colorimetric and fluorescent sensing ability toward Cu²⁺ with high selectivity and sensitivity. Job plot and mass spectra measurement revealed a 1 : 1 coordination mode between Cu²⁺ and probe BT in ethanol/HEPES (1 : 4 v/v) buffer (pH 7.2) solution, and the binding constant was calculated to be 3.6 × 10⁴ M^-1. The colour of BT solution (10 µM) immediately turned from purple red to yellow and the red fluorescence was quenched obviously when a certain amount of Cu²⁺ was added, which enabled a dual-channel detection of Cu²⁺. A paper strip pre-stained with BT solution was further fabricated and it also showed excellent sensing ability toward Cu²⁺ with a detection limit as low as 10^-6 M with the naked eye, which represents better portability and operation simplicity that is favourable for on-site analysis of Cu²⁺ in water.
