Bioinspired Smart Liquid Directional Transport Control

Developments in bioinspired superwetting materials have triggered technological revolutions in many disciplines. One representative area is liquid directional transport dominated by interface properties, which has experienced rapid progress recently. To improve the controllability, scientists try to use the external field, such as light, electricity, thermal, and so on, to assist or achieve controllable smart, responsive liquid directional transport. However, there are still some intractable problems and challenges behind prosperity. Here, we summarize the relevant basic theory of surface wettability and the processes of the development of bioinspired superwetting materials. We discuss the different essential mechanisms of liquid directional transport. Furthermore, smart external field-controlled fluid directional transport is the primary focus of this feature article. We briefly put forward our views on some outstanding problems, existing challenges, and trends in this field.

The Potential of Liquid Marbles for Biomedical Applications: A Critical Review

Liquid marbles (LM) are freestanding droplets covered by micro/nanoparticles with hydrophobic/hydrophilic properties, which can be manipulated as a soft solid. The phenomenon that generates these soft structures is regarded as a different method to generate a superhydrophobic behavior in the liquid/solid interface without modifying the surface. Several applications for the LM have been reported in very different fields, however the developments for biomedical applications are very recent. At first, the LM properties are reviewed, namely shell structure, LM shape, evaporation, floatability and robustness. The different strategies for LM manipulation are also described, which make use of magnetic, electrostatic and gravitational forces, ultraviolet and infrared radiation, and approaches that induce LM self-propulsion. Then, very distinctive applications for LM in the biomedical field are presented, namely for diagnostic assays, cell culture, drug screening and cryopreservation of mammalian cells. Finally, a critical outlook about the unexplored potential of LM for biomedical applications is presented, suggesting possible advances on this emergent scientific area.

Thermoresponsive Melamine Sponges with Switchable Wettability by Interface-Initiated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization for Oil/Water Separation

Here we have obtained a temperature responsive melamine sponge with a controllable wettability between superhydrophilicity and superhydrophobicity by grafting the octadecyltrichlorosilane and thermoresponsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) onto the surface of melamine sponge skeletons. The whole process included the silanization in which step the rough surface with low surface energy and the NH₂ were provided, and the atom transfer radical polymerization which ensured the successful grafting of PNIPAAm onto the skeleton's surface. The product exhibits a good reversible switch between superhydrophilicity and superhydrophobicity by changing the temperature below or above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST, about 32 °C) of PNIPAAm, and the modified sponge still retains a good responsiveness after undergoing two temperature switches for 20 cycles. Simultaneously, the functionalized sponges could be used to absorb the oil under water at 37 °C, and they released the absorbed oil in various ways under water at 20 °C, showing wide potential applications including oil/water separation.
