Ni-catalyzed mild hydrogenolysis and oxidations of C-O bonds via carbonate redox tags

Oxygenated molecules are omnipresent in natural as well as artificial settings making the redox transformation of the present C-O bonds a central tool for their processing. However, the required (super)stoichiometric redox agents which traditionally include highly reactive and hazardous reagents pose multiple practical challenges including process safety hazards or special waste management requirements. Here, we report a mild Ni-catalyzed fragmentation strategy based on carbonate redox tags for redox transformations of oxygenated hydrocarbons in the absence of any external redox equivalents or other additives. The purely catalytic process enables the hydrogenolysis of strong C(sp²)-O bonds including that of enol carbonates as well as the catalytic oxidation of C-O bonds under mild conditions down to room temperature. Additionally, we investigated the underlying mechanism and showcased the benefits of carbonate redox tags in multiple applications. More broadly, the work herein demonstrates the potential of redox tags for organic synthesis.

Cobalt-Catalyzed Formation of Grignard Reagents via C-O or C-S Bond Activation

C(aryl)-OMe bond functionalization catalyzed by cobalt(II) chloride in combination with a nacnac-type ligand and magnesium as a reductant is reported. Borylation and benzoylation of aryl methoxides are demonstrated, and C(aryl)-SMe bond borylation can be achieved under similar conditions. This is the first example of achieving these transformations using cobalt catalysis. Mechanistic studies suggest that a Grignard reagent is generated as an intermediate in a rare example of a magnesiation via a C-O bond activation reaction. Indeed, an organomagnesium species could be directly observed by electrospray ionization mass spectroscopic analysis. Kinetic experiments indicate that a heterogeneous cobalt catalyst performs the C-O bond activation.

Chromium-Catalyzed Reductive Cleavage of Unactivated Aromatic and Benzylic C–O Bonds

Reductive cleavage of aromatic and benzylic C–O bonds by chromium catalysis is reported. This deoxygenative reaction was promoted by low-cost CrCl2 precatalyst combined with poly(methyl hydrogen siloxane) as the mild reducing agent, providing a strategy in forming reduced motifs by cleavage of unactivated C–O bonds. A range of functional groups such as bromide, chloride, fluoride, hydroxyl, amino, and alkoxycarbonyl can be retained in the reduction.

Selective C-O Bond Reduction and Borylation of Aryl Ethers Catalyzed by a Rhodium-Aluminum Heterobimetallic Complex

We report the catalytic reduction of a C-O bond and the borylation by a rhodium complex bearing an X-type PAlP pincer ligand. We have revealed the reaction mechanism based on the characterization of the reaction intermediate and deuterium-labeling experiments. Notably, this novel catalytic system shows steric-hindrance-dependent chemoselectivity that is distinct from conventional Ni-based catalysts and suggests a new strategy for selective C-O bond activation by heterobimetallic catalysis.

Cobalt-catalyzed intramolecular decarbonylative coupling of acylindoles and diarylketones through the cleavage of C-C bonds

We report here cobalt-N-heterocyclic carbene catalytic systems for the intramolecular decarbonylative coupling through the chelation-assisted C-C bond cleavage of acylindoles and diarylketones. The reaction tolerates a wide range of functional groups such as alkyl, aryl, and heteroaryl groups, giving the decarbonylative products in moderate to excellent yields. This transformation involves the cleavage of two C-C bonds and formation of a new C-C bond without the use of noble metals, thus reinforcing the potential application of decarbonylation as an effective tool for C-C bond formation.

Nickel-catalyzed reductive defunctionalization of esters in the absence of an external reductant: activation of C–O bonds

The nickel-catalyzed reductive cleavage of esters in the absence of an external reductant, which involves the cleavage of an inert acyl C–O bond in O-alkyl esters is reported.
