Abstract
Curved nanographenes (NGs) are emerging as promising candidates for organic optoelectronics, supramolecular materials, and biological applications. Here we report a distinctive type of curved NGs bearing a [1,4]diazocine core that is fused with four pentagonal rings. This is formed by Scholl-type cyclization of two adjacent carbazole moieties through an unusual diradical cation mechanism followed by C-H arylation. Owing to the strain in the unique 5-5-8-5-5-membered ring skeleton, the resulting NG adopts an interesting concave-convex cooperatively dynamic structure. By peripheral π-extension, a helicene moiety with fixed helical chirality can be further mounted to modulate the vibration of the concave-convex structure, through which the distant bay region of the curved NG inherits the chirality of the helicene moiety in a reversed fashion. The [1,4]diazocine-embedded NGs show typical electron-rich characteristics and form charge transfer complexes with tunable emissions with a series of electron acceptors. The relatively protruding armchair edge also allows the fusion of three NGs into a C2 symmetric triple diaza[7]helicene which reveals a subtle balance of fixed and dynamic chirality.

Abstract
Dibenzo-fused five-membered heteroaromatic compounds, including dibenzofuran, carbazole, and dibenzothiophene, are fundamental structural units in various important polycyclic heteroaromatic compounds. The intramolecular C-H/C-H biaryl coupling of diaryl (thio)ethers and amines based on palladium(II) catalysis under oxidative conditions is known to be one of the most effective, step-economic methods for their construction. Representative examples for the construction of structurally intriguing π-extended polycyclic heteroaromatics through catalytic coupling reactions are briefly summarized in this mini-review.

Abstract
In this work we present a new multi-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) emitter paradigm, demonstrating that the structure need not require the presence of acceptor atoms. Based on an in silico design, the compound DiICzMes4 possesses a red-shifted emission, enhanced photoluminescence quantum yield, and smaller singlet-triplet energy gap, ΔEST, than the parent indolocarbazole that induces MR-TADF properties. Coupled cluster calculations accurately predict the magnitude of the ΔEST when the optimized singlet and triplet geometries are used. Slow yet optically detectable reverse intersystem crossing contributes to low efficiency in organic light-emitting diodes using DiICzMes4 as the emitter. However, when used as a terminal emitter in combination with a TADF assistant dopant within a hyperfluorescence device architecture, maximum external quantum efficiencies of up to 16.5% were achieved at CIE (0.15, 0.11). This represents one of the bluest hyperfluorescent devices reported to date. Simultaneously, recognising that MR-TADF emitters do not require acceptor atoms reveals an unexplored frontier in materials design, where yet greater performance may yet be discovered.

Abstract
High-efficiency and stable deep-blue bottom-emitting organic light-emitting diodes with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage y coordinates (CIEys) < 0.08 remain exclusive in the literature owing to the high excited-state energy of the emitters. Here, we propose the utilization of narrowband emitters to lower the excited-state energy for stable deep-blue devices by taking advantage of their high color purity. Two proof-of-concept deep-blue emitters with nitrogen-containing spiro-configured polycyclic frameworks are thereafter developed to introduce a multi-resonance effect for narrow emissions and sterically orthogonal configurations for alleviated molecular interactions. Both emitters show bright ultrapure deep-blue emissions with an extremely small full-width-at-half-maxima of only 18–19 nm, which can be maintained even in heavily doped films. Small CIEys of 0.054 and 0.066 are therefore measured from the corresponding electroluminescence devices with peak energies of only 2.77 eV (448 nm) and 2.74 eV (453 nm), accounting for the remarkably long LT80s (lifetime to 80% of the initial luminance) of 18 900 and 43 470 hours at 100 cd m−2, respectively. Furthermore, by adopting a thermally activated delayed fluorescence sensitizer, impressive maximum external quantum efficiencies of 25% and 31% are recorded respectively, representing state-of-the-art performances for deep-blue devices. An advanced concept of using ultra-narrowband emitters to improve the stability of deep-blue OLEDs is proposed and two proof-of-concept deep-blue emitters are developed.![]()

Abstract
The delta self-consistent field (ΔSCF) method was applied to the simulation of low-lying singlet and triplet excited states of multiple-resonance (MR)-type thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules, which form a promising group for organic light-emitting diode (OLED) emitters. A comparison with the experimental values of 13 emitters from the literature showed that ΔSCF gave fairly accurate S1 and T1 excitation energies (mean absolute errors (MAEs) of 0.092 and 0.055 eV, respectively) as well as quite accurate ΔEST (S1-T1 gap, MAE of 0.041 eV), which could not be calculated with sufficient accuracy by the conventional time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). ΔSCF also demonstrated its utility for the analysis of photophysical properties through a simulation of the reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) process of an MR-type emitter.

Abstract
Treatment of 11,12-bis(1,1'-biphenyl-3-yl or 6-phenylpyridin-2-yl)-substituted 11,12-dihydro-indolo[2,3-a]carbazole with an oxidizing system of Pd(II)/Ag(I) induced effective double dehydrogenative cyclization to afford the corresponding π-extended azahelicenes. The optical resolutions were readily achieved by a preparative chiral HPLC. It was found that the pyridopyrrolo-carbazole-based azahelicene that contains four nitrogen atoms exhibits ca. 6 times larger dissymmetry factors both in circularly dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), |gCD | and |gCPL | values being 1.1×10-2 and 4.4×10-3 , respectively, as compared with the parent indolocarbazole-based azahelicene. Theoretical calculations at the RI-CC2 level were employed to rationalize the observed enhanced chiroptical responses. The (chir)optical properties of the former helicene was further tuned by a protonation leading to remarkable red-shift with a considerable enhancement of the |gCPL | value.
