Self-assembly of an imidazolium surfactant in aprotic ionic liquids. 2. More than solvents

As tailorable solvents, the physiochemical properties of ionic liquids can be tuned by the structure of ions. Herein, we investigate the structural effects of ILs on the self-assembly of surfactants. It has been confirmed that the cationic surfactant 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (C₁₆mimBr) can self-assemble into micellar and lamellar lyotropic liquid crystal phases in the aprotic ionic liquid (AIL) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Emim]BF₄). In this work, we explore the aggregation behaviours in AILs with different alkyl chains on the imidazolium group, i.e., 1-propyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Pmim]BF₄), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Bmim]BF₄), 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Hmim]BF₄) and 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Omim]BF₄). With the increase of the cation chain length, AILs have better solubility of the solvophobic part of the surfactants and hence a weaker driving force for self-assembly. Therefore, the critical micellization concentration of C₁₆mimBr in AILs increases as confirmed by the surface tension and small angle X-ray scattering characterizations. More interesting things happen to the phase behaviours. Besides the micellar and lamellar lyotropic liquid crystal phases, a hexagonal lyotropic liquid crystal phase is formed in [Pmim]BF₄ while hexagonal and bicontinuous cubic lyotropic liquid crystal phases are formed in [Bmim]BF₄, [Hmim]BF₄ and [Omim]BF₄. It is surprising to observe richer phase behaviours in solvents of lower cohesive energy. The detailed structural information of various aggregates has been obtained by small-angle X-ray scattering. It is demonstrated that AILs work as not only solvents but also co-surfactants.

Liquid crystalline microspheres of azobenzene amphiphiles formed by thermally induced pH changes in binary water-hydrolytic ionic liquid media

Anionic azobenzene-containing bilayered membranes dispersed in binary water-ionic liquid (IL) media undergo proton-responsive transformation into liquid crystalline microspheres (LCMs). This transformation was induced by protons released by the heat-induced hydrolysis of tetrafluoroborate ions in the ILs. This work demonstrates the first beneficial use of hydrolysis-susceptible ILs in chemistry.

Photon Upconversion and Molecular Solar Energy Storage by Maximizing the Potential of Molecular Self-Assembly

The self-assembly of functional molecules into ordered molecular assemblies and the fulfillment of potentials unique to their nanotomesoscopic structures have been one of the central challenges in chemistry. This Feature Article provides an overview of recent progress in the field of molecular self-assembly with the focus on the triplet-triplet annihilation-based photon upconversion (TTA-UC) and supramolecular storage of photon energy. On the basis of the integration of molecular self-assembly and photon energy harvesting, triplet energy migration-based TTA-UC has been achieved in varied molecular systems. Interestingly, some molecular self-assemblies dispersed in solution or organogels revealed oxygen barrier properties, which allowed TTA-UC even under aerated conditions. The elements of molecular self-assembly were also introduced to the field of molecular solar thermal fuel, where reversible photoliquefaction of ionic crystals to ionic liquids was found to double the molecular storage capacity with the simultaneous pursuit of switching ionic conductivity. A future prospect in terms of innovating molecular self-assembly toward molecular systems chemistry is also discussed.

Amphiphile self-assemblies in supercritical CO2 and ionic liquids

Supercritical (sc) CO2 and ionic liquids (ILs) are very attractive green solvents with tunable properties. Using scCO2 and ILs as alternatives of conventional solvents (water and oil) for forming amphiphile self-assemblies has many advantages. For example, the properties and structures of the amphiphile self-assemblies in these solvents can be easily modulated by tuning the properties of solvents; scCO2 has excellent solvation power and mass-transfer characteristics; ILs can dissolve both organic and inorganic substances and their properties are designable to satisfy the requirements of various applications. Therefore, the amphiphile self-assemblies in scCO2 and ILs have attracted considerable attention in recent years. This review describes the advances of using scCO2 or/and ILs as amphiphile self-assembly media in the last decade. The amphiphile self-assemblies in scCO2 and ILs are first reviewed, followed by the discussion on combination of scCO2 and ILs in creating microemulsions or emulsions. Some future directions on the amphiphile self-assemblies in scCO2 and ILs are highlighted.

Self-assembly of azobenzene bilayer membranes in binary ionic liquid-water nanostructured media

Anionic azobenzene-containing amphiphile 1 (sodium 4-[4-(N-methyl-N-dodecylamino)phenylazo]benzenesulfonate) forms ordered bilayer membranes in binary ionic liquid (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethyl sulfate, [C2mim][C2OSO3])-water mixtures. The binary [C2mim][C2OSO3]-water mixture is macroscopically homogeneous at any mixing ratio; however, it possesses fluctuating nanodomains of [C2mim][C2OSO3] molecules as observed by dynamic light scattering (DLS). These nanodomains show reversible heat-induced mixing behavior with water. Although the amphiphile 1 is substantially insoluble in pure water, it is dispersible in the [C2mim][C2OSO3]-water mixtures. The concentration of [C2mim][C2OSO3] and temperature exert significant influences on the self-assembling characteristics of 1 in the binary media, as shown by DLS, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis spectroscopy, and zeta-potential measurements. Bilayer membranes with rod- or dotlike nanostructures were formed at a lower content of [C2mim][C2OSO3] (2-30 v/v %), in which azobenzene chromophores adopt parallel molecular orientation regardless of temperature. In contrast, when the content of [C2mim][C2OSO3] is increased above 60 v/v %, azobenzene bilayers showed thermally reversible gel-to-liquid crystalline phase transition. The self-assembly of azobenzene amphiphiles is tunable depending on the volume fraction of [C2mim][C2OSO3] and temperature, which are associated with the solvation by nanoclusters in the binary [C2mim][C2OSO3]-water media. These observations clearly indicate that mixtures of water-soluble ionic liquids and water provide unique and valiant environments for ordered molecular self-assembly.

Solvent nanostructure, the solvophobic effect and amphiphile self-assembly in ionic liquids

The ability of ionic liquids (ILs) to support amphiphile self-assembly into a range of mesophase structures has been established as a widespread phenomenon. From the ILs evaluated as self-assembly media, the vast majority have supported some lyotropic liquid crystal phase formation. Many neat ionic liquids have been shown to segregate into polar and non-polar domains to form a nanostructured liquid. A very strong correlation between the nanostructure of the ionic liquid and its characteristics as an amphiphile self-assembly solvent has been found. In this review we discuss ionic liquids as amphiphile self-assembly media, and identify trends that can be used to distinguish which ionic liquids are likely to have good promotion properties as self-assembly media. In particular these trends focus on the nanostructure of neat ionic liquids, their solvent cohesive energy density, and the related solvophobic effect. We forecast that many more ILs will be identified as amphiphile self-assembly solvents in the future.

Versatile supramolecular gelators that can harden water, organic solvents and ionic liquids

We developed novel supramolecular gelators with simple molecular structures that could harden a broad range of solvents: aqueous solutions of a wide pH range, organic solvents, edible oil, biodiesel, and ionic liquids at gelation concentrations of 0.1-2 wt %. The supramolecular gelators were composed of a long hydrophobic tail, amino acids and gluconic acid, which were prepared by liquid-phase synthesis. Among seven types of the gelators synthesized, the gelators containing L-Val, L-Leu, and L-Ile exhibited high gelation ability to various solvents. These gelators were soluble in aqueous and organic solvents, and also in ionic liquids at high temperature. The gelation of these solvents was thermally reversible. The microscopic observations (TEM, SEM, and CLSM) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements suggested that the gelator molecules self-assembled to form entangled nanofibers in a large variety of solvents, resulting in the gelation of these solvents. Molecular mechanics and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated the possible molecular packing of the gelator in the nanofibers. Interestingly, the gelation of an ionic liquid by our gelator did not affect the ionic conductivity of the ionic liquid, which would provide an advantage to electrochemical applications.

Vesicles in ionic liquids

The formation of vesicles from 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) in several room-temperature ionic liquids, namely, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BmimBF(4)), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BmimPF(6)), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (EmimNTf(2)), and N-benzylpyridinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (BnPyNTf(2)), as well as in a water/BmimBF(4) mixture, was investigated. In pure ionic liquids, observations by staining transmission electron microscopy demonstrated clearly the formation of spherical structures with diameters of 200-400 nm. The morphological characteristics of these vesicles in ionic liquids, in particular, the membrane thicknesses, were first investigated by small-angle neutron scattering measurements. The mean bilayer thickness was found to be ∼63 ± 1 Å in a deuterated ionic liquid (BnPyNTf(2)-d). This value was similar to that observed in water. The effect of ILs on the modification of the phase physical properties of multilamellar vesicles (MLVs) was then investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. In pure IL as in water, DPPC exhibited an endothermic pretransition followed by the main transition. These transition temperatures and the associated enthalpies in ILs were higher than those in water because of a reduction of the electrostatic repulsion between zwitterionic head groups. To better understand the effect of ionic liquid on the formation of multilamellar vesicles, mixtures of BmimBF(4) and water, which are miscible in all proportions, were analyzed (BmimBF(4)/water ratio from 0% to 100%). SANS and DSC experiments demonstrated that the bilayer structure and stability were strongly modified by the IL content. Moreover, matching SANS experiments showed that BmimBF(4) molecules prefer to be located inside the DPPC membrane rather than in water.

Water/ionic liquid interfaces as fluid scaffolds for the two-dimensional self-assembly of charged nanospheres

Liquid-liquid interfaces formed between water and ionic liquids serve as fluid scaffolds to self-assemble anionic nanospheres two-dimensionally. When aqueous dispersions of anionic fluorescent polystyrene nanospheres (diameter ∼500 nm) are layered on ionic liquids, ordered monolayers are spontaneously formed at the interface. Fluorescent nanospheres are hexagonally packed in the interfacial monolayers, as observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The adsorption and alignment of nanospheres at the interface are affected by the ionic strength and pH of the aqueous phase, indicating electrostatic interaction as the primary driving force for the self-assembly. CLSM observation of the water/ionic liquid interface reveals that the lower hemisphere of nanospheres is exposed to the ionic liquid phase, which effectively alleviates lateral electrostatic repulsion between charged nanospheres and promotes their close packing. The densely packed monolayer structure of nanospheres is stably immobilized on the surface of CLSM glass dishes simply by rinsing the ionic liquid layer with pure water, probably as a consequence of the gluing effect exerted by imidazolium cations. The fluidic nature of the water/ionic liquid interface facilitates the diffusion and ordering of nanospheres into a hexagonal lattice, and these features render the interface promising soft scaffolds to self-assemble anionic nanomaterials two-dimensionally.

Freeze-drying of aqueous solutions of deep eutectic solvents: a suitable approach to deep eutectic suspensions of self-assembled structures

This work describes how the preparation of deep eutectic solvents (DES) in its pure state can be accomplished through a simple approach based on the freeze-drying of aqueous solutions of the individual counterparts of DES. DES in its pure state obtained via freeze-drying are studied by (1)H NMR, which reveals the formation of halide ion-hydrogen-bond-donor supramolecular complexes (characteristic of DES), and by cryo-etch-SEM, which provides insight about the capability of aqueous solutions of DES to be segregated in DES and ice upon freezing. The paper also explores the suitability of the freeze-drying approach to incorporate organic self-assemblies (in particular, liposomes of ca. 200 nm) in DES with full preservation of their self-assembled structure. This is not a trivial issue given that amphiphilic molecules tend to be readily dissolved (hence, disassembled) in DES. The strategy proposed in this work is based on the freeze-drying of aqueous solutions containing the individual counterparts of DES and the preformed liposomes (also known as large unilamellar vesicles or LUV). The simplicity of the method should also make it suitable for the incorporation of different self-assembled structures (such other types of vesicles and micelles) in DES in its pure state.

Structure of nonionic surfactant micelles in the ionic liquid ethylammonium nitrate

The structure of micelles formed by nonionic polyoxyethylene alkyl ether nonionic surfactants, C n E m , in the room-temperature ionic liquid, ethylammonium nitrate (EAN), has been determined by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) as a function of alkyl and ethoxy chain length, concentration, and temperature. Micelles are found to form for all alkyl chains from dodecyl through to octadecyl. Dodecyl-chained surfactants have high critical micelle concentrations, around 1 wt%, and form weakly structured micelles. Surfactants with longer alkyl chains readily form micelles in EAN. The observed micelle structure changes systematically with alkyl and ethoxy chain length, in parallel with observations in aqueous solutions. Decreasing ethoxy chain length at constant alkyl chain length leads to a sphere to rod transition. These micelles also grow into rods with increasing temperature as their cloud point is approached in EAN.

Ionic liquids as amphiphile self-assembly media

In recent years, the number of non-aqueous solvents which mediate hydrocarbon-solvent interactions and promote the self-assembly of amphiphiles has been markedly increased by the reporting of over 30 ionic liquids which possess this previously unusual solvent characteristic. This new situation allows a different exploration of the molecular "solvophobic effect" and tests the current understanding of amphiphile self-assembly. Interestingly, both protic and aprotic ionic liquids support amphiphile self-assembly, indicating that it is not required for the solvents to be able to form a hydrogen bonded network. Here, the use of ionic liquids as amphiphile self-assembly media is reviewed, including micelle and liquid crystalline mesophase formation, their use as a solvent phase in microemulsions and emulsions, and the emerging field of nanostructured inorganic materials synthesis. Surfactants, lipids and block co-polymers are the focus amphiphile classes in this critical review (174 references).

Challenges and breakthroughs in recent research on self-assembly

The controlled fabrication of nanometer-scale objects is without doubt one of the central issues in current science and technology. However, existing fabrication techniques suffer from several disadvantages including size-restrictions and a general paucity of applicable materials. Because of this, the development of alternative approaches based on supramolecular self-assembly processes is anticipated as a breakthrough methodology. This review article aims to comprehensively summarize the salient aspects of self-assembly through the introduction of the recent challenges and breakthroughs in three categories: (i) types of self-assembly in bulk media; (ii) types of components for self-assembly in bulk media; and (iii) self-assembly at interfaces.

Electrical conductivity study on micelle formation of long-chain imidazolium ionic liquids in aqueous solution

Electrical conductivity was measured for aqueous solutions of long-chain imidazolium ionic liquids (IL), 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bromides with C(12)-C(16) alkyl chains. The break points appeared in specific conductivity (kappa) vs concentration (c) plot indicates that the molecular aggregates, i.e., micelles, are formed in aqueous solutions of these IL species. The critical micelle concentration (cmc) determined from the kappa vs c plot is somewhat lower than those for typical cationic surfactants, alkyltrimethylammonium bromides with the same hydrocarbon chain length. The electrical conductivity data were analyzed according to the mixed electrolyte model of micellar solution, and the aggregation number, n, and the degree of counter ion binding, beta, were estimated. The n values of the present ILs are somewhat smaller than those reported for alkyltrimethylammonium bromides, which may be attributed to bulkiness of the cationic head group of the IL species. The thermodynamic parameters for micelle formation of the present ILs were estimated using the values of cmc and beta as a function of temperature. The contribution of entropy term to the micelle formation is superior to that of enthalpy term below about 30 degrees C, and it becomes opposite at higher temperature. This coincides with the picture drawn for the micelle formation of conventional ionic surfactants.

Surface adsorption and micelle formation of surface active ionic liquids in aqueous solution

Aqueous solutions of three kinds of surface active ionic liquids composed of the 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium cation have been investigated by means of surface tension and electrical conductivity measurements at room temperature (298 K). The surface tension measurements provided a series of parameters, including critical micelle concentration (cmc), surface tension at the cmc (gammacmc), adsorption efficiency (pC20), and effectiveness of surface tension reduction (Picmc). In addition, with application of the Gibbs adsorption isotherm, maximum surface excess concentration (Gammamax) and minimum surface area/molecule (Amin) at the air-water interface were estimated. The effect of sodium halides, NaCl, NaBr, and NaI, on the surface activity was also investigated. It was found that both the pC20 and the Picmc were rather larger than those reported for traditional ionic surfactants and the cmc values were somewhat lower than those for typical cationic surfactants, alkyltrimethylammonium bromides, and comparable to typical anionic surfactants, sodium alkyl sulfates. These results demonstrate that the surface activity of long-chained imidazolium IL is somewhat superior to that of conventional ionic surfactants.

Structural Studies of 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium Tetrafluoroborate/TX-100/p-Xylene Ionic Liquid Microemulsions

The ionic liquid (IL) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (bmimBF4) forms nonaqueous microemulsions with p-xylene, with the aid of the nonionic surfactant TX-100. The phase behavior of the ternary system is investigated, and three microregions of the microemulsions-ionic liquid-in-oil (IL/O), bicontinuous, and oil-in-ionic liquid (O/IL)-are identified by conductivity measurements, according to percolation theory. On the basis of a phase diagram, a series of IL/O microemulsions are chosen and characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS). The size of aggregates increases on increasing the amount of added polar component (bmimBF(4)), which is a similar phenomenon to that observed for typical water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsions, suggesting the formation of IL/O microemulsions. The microstructural characteristics of the microemulsions are investigated by FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The results indicate that the interaction between the electronegative oxygen atoms of the oxyethylene (OE) units in TX-100 and the electropositive imidazolium ring may be the driving force for the solubilization of bmimBF4 into the core of the TX-100 aggregates. In addition, the micropolarity of the microemulsions is investigated by using methyl orange (MO) as a UV/Vis spectroscopic probe. A relatively constant polarity of the microemulsion droplets is obtained in the IL microemulsion. Finally, a plausible structure for the IL/O microemulsion is presented.

Synthesis of Cyano-Bridged Magnetic Nanoparticles Using Room-Temperature Ionic Liquids

A principally new exploit of ionic liquids as an alternative reaction medium in the synthesis of cyano-bridged coordination-polymer nanoparticles is reported. Stable colloid solutions containing nanoparticles of cyano-bridged molecule-based magnets, M)[Fe(CN)6]2/[RMIM][BF4] (M2+=Ni, Cu, Co) and Fe4[Fe(CN)6]3/[RMIM][BF4] (R=1-butyl (BMIM), 1-decyl (DMIM)), were prepared in the corresponding 1-R-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [RMIM][BF4], which acts as both a stabilising agent and a solvent. By varying the length of the N-alkyl chain on the imidazolium cation of [RMIM]+ and the temperature, the growing process can be controlled to produce nanoparticles of different sizes. By studying the magnetic properties of frozen colloids it is shown that the relaxation of magnetisation is strongly influenced by interparticle interactions, which leads to the appearance of spin-glass-like dynamics in these systems.
