Fabrication of bilayer tetrathiafulvalene integrated surface covalent organic frameworks

A bilayer covalent organic framework (COF) of TTF-based building blocks was obtained by imine reaction between tetrathiafulvalene tetraaldehyde (4ATTF) and p-phenylenediamine (PPDA). Direct evidence for the eclipsed stacking of bilayer structure via π-π interaction between TTF units is provided by high resolution scanning tunneling microscopy.

Tetrathiafulvalenes (TTFs) are a class of important functional materials whose intermolecular interaction, which will contribute to constructing a supramolecular structure, still needs further understanding.

Template-assisted assembly: scanning tunneling microscopy study of solvent-dependent adlattices of alkyl-derivatized tetrathiafulvalene

The self-assembly of an adsorbate as a function of the strength of solvent-substrate adsorption is an important yet relatively unexplored subject. In this study, how the strength of solvent-substrate adsorption and solvent-solvent attraction affects the assembly of tetrakis(octadecylthio)tetrathiafulvalene (1) is scrutinized by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). For solvents with strong intermolecular interactions and adsorption onto graphite, such as long n-alkanes (C(n)H(2n+2), n ≥ 13), STM reveals that the solvent molecules form lamellae which become a template to direct the assembly of 1 into one-dimensional arrays. The lengths of one of the unit cell vectors for the assemblies are increased and well correlated with the solvent sizes. In situ STM monitoring of 1 introduced onto graphite with preadsorbed n-tetradecane adlattices shows that the developed assemblies of 1 have striped features aligned parallel to the underlying template. In contrast, for solvents with weak adsorption, such as short n-alkanes (C(n)H(2n+2), n ≤ 12), toluene, and 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene, the adlattice structures of 1 are solvent-independent.

STM observation of alkyl-chain-assisted self-assembled monolayers of pyridine-coordinated porphyrin rhodium chlorides

Alkyl-chain-assisted self-assembled monolayers of pyridine-coordinated porphyrin rhodium chlorides were observed at the solid-liquid interface by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The resolved images at a molecular level were obtainable in the pure solution of pyridine-coordinated porphyrin rhodium chloride with four triacontyl groups [Rh(C300PP)(Cl)(Py)]. In the case of pyridine-coordinated porphyrin rhodium chloride with four octadecyl groups [Rh(C18OPP)(Cl)(Py)], the STM images were not obtainable in the pure solution of Rh(C18OPP)(Cl)(Py) but obtainable in the mixture containing Rh(C18OPP)(Cl)(Py) and free porphyrin C18OPP. On the basis of the mixed self-assembled monolayer analysis, the apparent difference in the adsorption free energy between Rh(CnOPP)(Cl)(Py) and CnOPP (deltaGapp) was calculated. The calculated deltaGapp values for C18OPP and C30OPP mixed systems were quite different. The disadvantage of the adsorption free energy of Rh(C18OPP)(Cl)(Py) makes it difficult to obtain molecularly resolved images of Rh(C18OPP)(Cl)(Py), and the large adsorption energy due to the long alkyl chains enabled us to obtain molecularly resolved images of Rh(C30OPP)(Cl)(Py).
