An Inorganic-Organic Hybrid Framework Composed of Polyoxotungstate and Long-Chained Bolaamphiphile

Surfactants are functional molecules utilized in various situations. The self-assembling property of surfactants enables several molecular arrangements that can be employed to build up nanometer-sized architectures. This is beneficial in the construction of functional inorganic-organic hybrids holding the merits of both inorganic and organic components. Among several surfactants, bolaamphiphile surfactants with two hydrophilic heads are effective, as they have multiple connecting or coordinating sites in one molecule. Here, a functional polyoxotungstate inorganic anion was successfully hybridized with a bolaamphiphile to form single crystals with anisotropic one-dimensional alignment of polyoxotungstate. Keggin-type metatungstate ([H₂W₁₂O₄₀]^6-, H₂W₁₂) was employed as an inorganic anion, and 1,12-dodecamethylenediammonium (C₁₂N₂) derived from 1,12-dodecanediamine was combined as an organic counterpart. A simple and general ion-exchange reaction provided a hybrid crystal consisting of H₂W₁₂ and C₁₂N₂ (C₁₂N₂-H₂W₁₂). Single crystal X-ray structure analyses revealed a characteristic honeycomb structure in the C₁₂N₂-H₂W₁₂ hybrid crystal, which is possibly effective for the emergence of conductivity due to the dissociative protons of C₁₂N₂.

Polyoxomolybdate Layered Crystals Constructed from a Heterocyclic Surfactant: Syntheses, Pseudopolymorphism and Introduction of Metal Cations

Crystals with layered structures are crucial for the construction of functional materials exhibiting intercalation, ionic conductivity, or emission properties. Polyoxometalate crystals hybridized with surfactant cations have distinct layered packings due to the surfactants which can form lamellar structures. Introducing metal cations into such polyoxometalate-surfactant hybrid crystals is significant for the addition of specific functions. Here, polyoxomolybdate–surfactant hybrid crystals were synthesized as single crystals, and unambiguously characterized by X-ray structure analyses. Octamolybdate ([Mo₈O₂₆]^4–, Mo₈) and heterocyclic surfactant of 1-dodecylpyridinium (C₁₂py) were employed. The hybrid crystals were composed of α-type and β-type Mo₈ isomers. Two crystalline phases containing α-type Mo₈ were obtained as pseudopolymorphs depending on the crystallization conditions. Crystallization with the presence of rubidium and cesium cations caused the formation of metal cation-introduced hybrid crystals comprising β-Mo₈ (C₁₂py-Rb-Mo₈ and C₁₂py-Cs-Mo₈). The yield of the C₁₂py-Rb-Mo₈ hybrid crystal was almost constant within crystallization temperatures of 279–303 K, while that of C₁₂py-Cs-Mo₈ decreased over 288 K. This means that the C₁₂py-Mo₈ hybrid crystal can capture Rb⁺ and Cs⁺ from the solution phase into the solids as the C₁₂py-Rb-Mo₈ and C₁₂py-Cs-Mo₈ hybrid crystals. The C₁₂py-Mo₈ hybrid crystals could be applied to ion-capturing materials for heavy metal cation removal.

Ultradeep hydrodesulfurization of fuel over superior NiMoS phases constructed by a novel Ni(MoS4)2(C13H30N)2 precursor

Ni(MoS₄)₂(C₁₃H₃₀N)₂ was synthesized and adopted for preparing a NiMoS/γ-Al₂O₃ hydrodesulfurization catalyst, and the as-prepared catalyst exhibits superior 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene hydrodesulfurization activity.

Supramolecular interaction-induced assemblies of polyanions and 2-aminopyridinium in two polyoxometalate-based hybrids

Organic-inorganic hybrids consisting of organic cations and polyanions are promising functional materials due to their various compositions and structures. An important aspect of these materials is the interactions between the organic and inorganic components, which not only produce the final structures, but also influence the properties. Here, we investigated the interactions between organic cations and polyanions using protonated 2-aminopyridinium (Hap) as the cation, and successfully obtained two polyoxometalate-based hybrids, namely (C₅H₇N₂)₄[Mo₈O₂₆], (I), and (C₅H₇N₂)₂[NiMo₆O₁₆(OH)₂{CH₃C(CH₂O)₃}₂]·4H₂O, (II). In the crystal structure of (I), every Hap cation links with two polyanions by donating one or two N-H...O hydrogen bonds, and every polyanion is surrounded by eight Hap cations via terminal or bridging O atoms. Conversely, in compound (II), every Hap cation only links with one polyanion decorated by a triol ligand; this organic-inorganic component further assembles via uncoordinated water molecules. In the extended structures, Hap plays a key role, not only providing a counter charge, but also acting as `glue' linking polyanions in the role of hydrogen-bond donors. In both compounds, as the nodes of the supramolecular network, the polyanions exhibit an ordered two-dimensional arrangement due to strong hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions between the organic and inorganic parts. The electrochemistry of compound (I) shows that redox sourcing from polyanions is a surface-controlled process. Conversely, the magnetic behaviour of compound (II) indicates dominant antiferromagnetic properties.

Conductive Supramolecular Architecture Constructed from Polyoxovanadate Cluster and Heterocyclic Surfactant

Proton-conductive solid electrolytes are significant for fuel-cell battery technology. Especially for use in motor vehicles, proton conductors which work at intermediate temperatures (373–673 K) under an anhydrous atmosphere are desired to improve the fuel cell stability and efficiency. Inorganic–organic hybrid supramolecular architectures are a promising option for the realization of highly conductive proton conductors. Here, a hybrid layered crystal was synthesized for the first time by using an proton-containing decavanadate (V10) anion and a heterocyclic surfactant cation. A simple ion-exchange reaction led to the formation of an inorganic–organic hybrid of V10 by using dodecylpyridazinium (C12pda) as the heterocyclic surfactant. Single crystal X-ray analyses revealed that four C12pda cations were associated with one V10 anion, which was a diprotonated species forming a one-dimensional infinite chain structure through hydrogen bonds. Anhydrous proton conductivity was investigated by alternating current (AC) impedance spectroscopy in the range of 313–393 K, exhibiting a maximum value of 1.7 × 10−5 S cm−1 at 373 K.

Solvent Dielectricity-Modulated Helical Assembly and Morphologic Transformation of Achiral Surfactant-Inorganic Cluster Ionic Complexes

Ionic complexes comprising single/double chain cationic surfactant and Lindqvist-type polyoxomolybdate anionic cluster were used for controlled self-assembly in organic solutions. In the solvent with low dielectric constant the complexes self-assembled into flat ribbon like lamellar aggregations with an inverse bilayer substructure where the cluster located at the middle. Under the condition of increased dielectric constant, the solvent triggered the formation of helical self-assemblies, which finally transformed from helical ribbons to the flower-like assemblies due to the bilayer becoming excessively twisted. The self-assembled morphology and the substructure were characterized by SEM, TEM, and XRD. The solvent dielectricity-controlled morphologic transformations modulated by the variation of electrostatic interactions between organic cations and inorganic polyanions were demonstrated by ¹H NMR and IR spectra. The strategy in this work represents an effective route in targeting the chirality-directed functionalization of inorganic clusters by combining controllable and helical assemblies of achiral polyoxometalate complexes in one system.

Ionic Complexes of Metal Oxide Clusters for Versatile Self-Assemblies

The combination of rational design of building components and suitable utilization of driving force affords spontaneous molecular assemblies with well-defined nanostructure and morphology over multiple length scales. The serious challenges in constructing assemblies with structural advantages for the realization of functions programmed into the building components usually lie ahead since the process that occurs does not always follow the expected roadmap in the absence of external intervention. Thus, prefabricated intermediates that help in governing the target self-assemblies are developed into a type of unique building blocks. Metal oxide cluster polyanions are considered as a type of molecular nanoclusters with size scale and structural morphology similar to those of many known inorganic particles and clusters but possess distinctive characteristics. Following the understanding of these clusters in self-assembly and the rationalization of their most efficient design strategy and approach, the obtained fundamental principles can also be applied in common nanoparticle- and cluster-based systems. On the other hand, the deliberate synergy offered by organic countercations that support the self-assembly of these clusters greatly expands the opportunity for the functionalization of complex building units via control of multiple interactions. The ionic combination of the inorganic clusters with hydrophilicity and the cationic organic component with hydrophobicity leads to discrete properties of the complexes. Significantly, the core-shell structure with rigid-flexible features and amphiphilicity will pave the way for hierarchical self-assemblies of the obtained complexes, while the intrinsic characteristics of the metal oxide clusters can be modulated through external physicochemical stimuli. Within this context, over the past decade we have extensively explored the ionic combination of inorganic polyanionic clusters with cationic organic amphiphiles and devoted our efforts to establishing the general rules and structure-property relationships of the formed complexes for constructing self-assemblies at the interface, in solution, and in solid matrixes. Specific interest has been focused on the functional synergy deriving from the incompatible components in highly organized self-assemblies. In this Account, we describe the recent progress on the ionic complexation of polyoxometalate clusters with cationic amphiphiles and the construction of diverse self-assembled nanostructures. First, the fundamental structural characteristics and molecular geometries of the prepared complexes are analyzed. The construction principle and diversity of the self-assembly based on the complexes and the smart stimuli response are then discussed, subject to the adjustment of various non-covalent interactions occurring in the assemblies. Subsequently, we enumerate the functional applications of the ionic complexes assembling into organic, inorganic, and even biological matrixes. The inspiration from the construction of ionic complexation and self-assembly in this Account provides vivid profiles for the design of hybrid materials involving nanoclusters and/or nanoparticles with rich potentials in addition to polyoxometalate chemistry.

Conductive Hybrid Crystal Composed from Polyoxomolybdate and Deprotonatable Ionic-Liquid Surfactant

A polyoxomolybdate inorganic-organic hybrid crystal was synthesized with deprotonatable ionic-liquid surfactant. 1-dodecylimidazolium cation was employed for its synthesis. The hybrid crystal contained δ-type octamolybdate (Mo₈) isomer, and possessed alternate stacking of Mo₈ monolayers and interdigitated surfactant bilayers. The crystal structure was compared with polyoxomolybdate hybrid crystals comprising 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium surfactant, which preferred β-type Mo₈ isomer. The less bulky hydrophilic moiety of the 1-dodecylimidazolium interacted with the δ-Mo₈ anion by N-H···O hydrogen bonds, which presumably induced the formation of the δ-Mo₈ anion. Anhydrous conductivity of the hybrid crystal was estimated to be 5.5 × 10(-6) S·cm(-1) at 443 K by alternating current (AC) impedance spectroscopy.

Flexible single-layer ionic organic-inorganic frameworks towards precise nano-size separation

Consecutive two-dimensional frameworks comprised of molecular or cluster building blocks in large area represent ideal candidates for membranes sieving molecules and nano-objects, but challenges still remain in methodology and practical preparation. Here we exploit a new strategy to build soft single-layer ionic organic–inorganic frameworks via electrostatic interaction without preferential binding direction in water. Upon consideration of steric effect and additional interaction, polyanionic clusters as connection nodes and cationic pseudorotaxanes acting as bridging monomers connect with each other to form a single-layer ionic self-assembled framework with 1.4 nm layer thickness. Such soft supramolecular polymer frameworks possess uniform and adjustable ortho-tetragonal nanoporous structure in pore size of 3.4–4.1 nm and exhibit greatly convenient solution processability. The stable membranes maintaining uniform porous structure demonstrate precisely size-selective separation of semiconductor quantum dots within 0.1 nm of accuracy and may hold promise for practical applications in selective transport, molecular separation and dialysis systems.

Membranes composed of ionic frameworks offer applications in nano-size separation thanks to their highly regular pores. Here, the authors devise such a system composed of polyoxometalates and organic pseudorotaxanes, and demonstrate their ability to separate mixed sized CdTe quantum dots.

Decisive interactions between the heterocyclic moiety and the cluster observed in polyoxometalate-surfactant hybrid crystals

Inorganic-organic hybrid crystals were successfully obtained as single crystals by using polyoxotungstate anion and cationic dodecylpyridazinium (C12pda) and dodecylpyridinium (C12py) surfactants. The decatungstate (W10) anion was used as the inorganic component, and the crystal structures were compared. In the crystal comprising C12pda (C12pda-W10), the heterocyclic moiety directly interacted with W10, which contributed to a build-up of the crystal structure. On the other hand, the crystal consisting of C12py (C12py-W10) had similar crystal packing and molecular arrangement to those in the W10 crystal hybridized with other pyridinium surfactants. These results indicate the significance of the heterocyclic moiety of the surfactant to construct hybrid crystals with polyoxometalate anions.

Exploring the interplay between ligand derivatisation and cation type in the assembly of hybrid polyoxometalate Mn-Andersons

Herein a library of hybrid Mn-Anderson polyoxometalates anions are presented: 1, [(MnMo6 O18 )((OCH2 )3 -C-(CH2 )7 CHCH2 )2 ](3-) ; compound 2, [(MnMo6 O18 )((OCH2 )3 C-NHCH2 C16 H9 )2 ](3-) ; compound 3, [(MnMo6 O18 )((OCH2 )3 C-(CH2 )7 CHCH2 )1 ((OCH2 )3 C-NHCH2 C16 H9 )1 ](3-) ; compound 4, [(MnMo6 O18 )((OCH2 )3 C-NHC(O)CH2 CHCH2 )2 ](3-) and compounds 5-9, [(MnMo6 O18 )((OCH2 )3 C-NHC(O)(CH2 )x CH3 )2 ]), where x = 4, 10, 12, 14, and 18 respectively. The compounds resulting from the cation exchange of the anions 1-9 to give TBA (a) and DMDOA (b) salts, and additionally for compounds 1, 2 and 3, tetraphenylphosphonium (PPh4 ) (c) salts, are explored at the air/water interface using scanning force microscopy, showing a range of architectures including hexagonal structures, nanofibers and other supramolecular forms. Additionally the solid-state structures for compounds 1c, 2c, 4a, 6a, 9a, are presented for the first time and these investigations demonstrate the delicate interplay between the structure of the covalently derivatised hybrid organo-clusters as well as the ion-exchange cation types.

Hybrid Layered Crystal Comprising Polyoxometalate and Surfactant Synthesized from Reduced Mo-Blue Species

A hybrid layered crystal containing polyoxomolybdate was successfully synthesized from reduced Mo-blue species as starting material. The hybrid crystal, [C5H5N(C16H33)]2[β-H2Mo8O26]·2C2H5OH (C16py-H2Mo8), was obtained as a single phase by the gradual oxidation of hexadecylpyridinium-Mo-blue (C16py-Mo-blue) hybrid. The X-ray structure analysis revealed that C16py-H2Mo8comprisedβ-type octamolybdate anion with two protons (β-H2Mo8). Theβ-H2Mo8anions and ethanol molecules of crystallization formed two-dimensional anionic layers. The pyridine rings of C16py did not attend to form the two-dimensional inorganic layers, and the interdigitated C16py bilayers were sandwiched by theβ-H2Mo8anionic layers with periodicity of 18.2 Å. These C16py-H2Mo8hybrid layered crystals possibly work as a new class of proton conductor.

Smart high-κ nanodielectrics using solid supported polyoxometalate-rich nanostructures

Utilizing Langmuir-Blodgett deposition and scanning probe microscopy, we have investigated the extent to which cations alter the self-assembly processes of hybrid polyoxometalates (POMs) on surfaces. The well-defined 2D hexagonal nanostructures obtained were extensively characterized and their properties were studied, and this has revealed fascinating dielectric behavior and reversible capacitive properties. The nanostructures are extremely stable under ambient conditions, and yet exhibit fascinating self-patterning upon heating. These findings present POMs as effective smart nanodielectrics and open up a new field for future POM applications.

Controllable Layered Structures in Polyoxomolybdate-Surfactant Hybrid Crystals

Inorganic-organic hybrid crystals containing α-octamolybdate (Mo₈) or hexamolybdate (Mo₆) were isolated by using hexadecyltrimethylammonium (C₁₆) surfactant. The packing mode of the inorganic layers depended on a difference in the polyoxomolybdate molecular structure. The structure for both crystals consisted of alternate stacking of C₁₆ organic bilayers and polyoxomolybdate inorganic layers with a periodicity of 24.4–24.6 Å. However, the C₁₆-Mo₈ crystals contained Mo₈ monolayers, while the C₁₆-Mo₆ crystals contained Mo₆ bilayers. These lattice structures for the polyoxometalate/organic hybrid will be designed by the molecular structures of polyoxometalate.

Isolated and linear arrays of surfactant-encapsulated polyoxometalate clusters on graphite

We report on the self-assembly of several surfactant-encapsulated clusters (SECs) on the basal plane of graphite consisting of the doughnut-shaped tungstophosphate anion [Na(H2O)P5W30O110] covered by a hydrophobic shell of surfactants. Well-ordered rodlike structures are observed using scanning force microscopy. No such ordering is observed if the surfactant methyltrioctadecylammonium is used for encapsulation, suggesting that the density of alkyl chains around the polyoxometalate cluster is an important factor in determining the order of SEC assemblies on graphite. Coadsorption of tetratetracontane (n-C44H90) and (DODA)14[Na(H2O)P5W30O110] results in single, isolated SECs on a buffer layer of tetratetracontane, as determined by scanning tunneling microscopy.

Investigation of inorganic cluster–surfactant flocculants for virion sequestration and removal from aqueous media

Anionic polyoxometalates or cationic aluminum clusters when combined with a surfactant of an opposite charge form hydrophobic precipitates that are approximately lamellar with alternating layers of interdigitated surfactant tails and inorganic clusters. The charged surfactant heads are associated with the inorganic cluster layers. When these phases self-assemble and precipitate from aqueous media spiked with a virus titer, either bovine enterovirus (BEV) or influenza A, the precipitates effectively sequester the virions via an enmeshment process. These studies were done via precipitation and filtration of the cluster-surfactant floc in the presence of the virus, followed by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) analysis of the filtrate. Efficacy of these cluster-surfactant phases for virion sequestration is variable as a function of their solubility, the size of colloid formed in solution, and their degree of long-range order. Generally less soluble, poorly ordered precipitates that form the largest colloids are the most effective virion sequestering media. Cluster-surfactant phases were characterized in solution by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and dynamic light scattering (DLS); and in the solid-state by powder X-ray diffraction and solid-state magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR.

Langmuir-Blodgett films of a Mo-blue nanoring [Mo(142)O(429)H(10)(H(2)O)(49)(CH(3)CO(2))(5)(CH(3)CH(2)CO(2))](30)(-) (Mo(142)) by the semiamphiphilic method

Langmuir monolayers and LB films of the ring-shaped mixed-valence polyoxomolybdate [Mo142O429H10(H2O)49(CH3CO2)5(CH3CH2CO2)](30-) (Mo142) dissolved in the aqueous subphase have been successfully fabricated by using the adsorption properties of a DODA monolayer. Infrared and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy of the LB films indicates that Mo142 and DODA molecules are incorporated within these LB films. X-ray reflectivity experiments indicate that the LB films exhibit a well-defined lamellar structure formed by bilayers of DODA molecules alternating with monolayers of Mo142. Using behenic acid-modified hydrophobic quartz substrate is critical for the formation of the well-defined lamellar structure. From the values of the periodicity obtained by these experiments it is clear that the Mo142 clusters lie flat along the charged organic layers. AFM images also showed the flat and homogeneous films on the quartz substrates treated with behenic acid. Cyclic voltammograms of Mo142-LB films deposited on ITO substrates showed quasi-reversible oxidation/reduction waves with positive shift of the potential compared to the case of solution.

Regular two-dimensional molecular array of photoluminescent Anderson-type polyoxometalate constructed by Langmuir-Blodgett technique

A regular two-dimensional photoluminescent array of Anderson-type polyoxometalates (POMs) was constructed as built-up Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. LB films of hexatungstoantimonate (SbW(6)) and -manganate (MnW(6)) were successfully fabricated by using dimethyldioctadecylammonium (DODA) as cationic partner, while hexamolybdochromate (CrMo(6)) was unsuccessful. Specular X-ray reflectivity (SXR) and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD) measurements revealed that both SbW(6)/DODA and MnW(6)/DODA LB films exhibited well-ordered layers consisting of periodic arrangement of the planar-structured Anderson-type molecules. Surprising periodicity was observed in SbW(6)/DODA LB film, in which the distance between SbW(6) and DODA layers was 4.40 nm, and SbW(6) anions would form a two-dimensional square lattice with a length of 1.4 nm. SbW(6)/DODA LB films exhibited photoluminescence at 77 K, while emission spectra were observed at room temperature for SbW(6) solid.

Polyoxometalate Monolayers in Langmuir-Blodgett Films

Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of a variety of polyoxometalates of different shapes, sizes, and charges were prepared by taking advantage of the adsorption properties of these polyanions on a positively charged monolayer of an organic surfactant spread on water. Three different aspects were investigated. 1) The electrochemical and electrochromic properties of LB films containing the easily reducible polyoxoanion [P2Mo18O62]6-. Absorbance changes of these LB films deposited onto an ITO substrate have been induced by repeated switching of the applied potential. These changes are due to the formation of the colored reduced forms of the polyanion. Coloration and bleaching of the LB film occur very quickly and are reversible. 2) The preparation of LB films based on magnetic polyoxometalates, such as the Keggin anions, [CoW12O40]6- and [SiMn(OH2)W11O39]6-, or containing magnetic clusters of increasing nuclearities such as [Co4(H2O)2(PW9O34)2]10- and [Co4(H2O)2(P2W15O62)2]16- based on a Co4O16 ferromagnetic cluster, and the polyoxometalates [Co9(OH)3(H2O)6(HPO4)2(PW9O34)3]16- and [Ni9(OH)3-(H2O)6(HPO4)2(PW9O34)3]16- based on a nonanuclear M9O36 cluster. 3) The preparation of LB films of the giant heteropolyoxomolybdate, [Na3(NH4)12][Mo57Fe6(NO)6O174(OH)3-(H2O)24]76 H2O.
