Electron affinities and lowest triplet and singlet state properties of para-oligophenylenes (n = 3-5): theory and experiment

We apply photodetachment-photoelectron spectroscopy to measure the electron affinities and the energetics of the lowest excited electronic states of the neutral molecules para-terphenyl (p3P), para-quaterphenyl (p4P) and para-quinquephenyl (p5P), including especially the triplet states below S1. The interpretation of the experimental data is based on the comparison to calculated 0-0 energies and Dyson norms, using density functional theory and multireference configuration interaction methods, as well as Franck-Condon patterns. The comparison between calculated and experimental vibrational fine-structures reveals a twisted benzoid-like molecular structure of the S0 ground state and nearly planar quinoid-like nuclear arrangements in the S1 and T1 excited states as well as in the D0 anion ground state. For all para-oligophenylenes (ppPs) in this series, at least two triplet states have been identified in the energy regime below the S1 state. The large optical S0-S1 cross sections of the ppPs are rationalised by the nodal structure of the molecular orbitals involved in the transition. The measured electron affinities range from 380 meV (p3P) over 620 meV (p4P) to 805 meV (p5P). A saturation of the electron binding energy with the increasing number of phenyl units is thus not yet in sight.

Primary Radical Cations in Irradiated Poly(isobutylene)

Using the method of time-resolved magnetic field effect in radiation-induced fluorescence, primary radical cations (RCs) in irradiated poly(isobutylene) (PIB) have been detected for the first time. A comparison of experimental results with the data of quantum chemical calculations suggests that the initial geometry of the ionized fragment of the PIB molecule is close to the geometry of the neutral polymer in the trans-gauche-trans-gauche conformation. The spin density of the RC in this geometry is delocalized over more than 10 polymer units, and the width of the RC's EPR spectrum is about ΔH_pp ≈ 1.3 mT. At a temperature of 273 K and lower, the lifetime of the primary RCs with the delocalized spin density exceeds 10 ns. The structural relaxation of the RCs results in the spin density localization on a single C-C bond, which is extended to nearly 0.2 nm, and in the increase in the EPR spectrum width to ΔH_pp ≈ 2.4 mT. It looks likely that this intramolecular structural relaxation is coupled strongly with those types of molecular motions that determine the process of dielectric β-relaxation in the polymer.

Electronic and Optical Properties of the Narrowest Armchair Graphene Nanoribbons Studied by Density Functional Methods

In the present study, a series of planar poly(p-phenylene) (PPP) oligomers with n phenyl rings (n = 1–20), designated as n-PP, are taken as finite-size models of the narrowest armchair graphene nanoribbons with hydrogen passivation. The singlet-triplet energy gap, vertical ionization potential, vertical electron affinity, fundamental gap, optical gap, and exciton binding energy of n-PP are calculated using Kohn-Sham density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory with various exchange-correlation density functionals. The ground state of n-PP is shown to be singlet for all the chain lengths studied. In contrast to the lowest singlet state (i.e., the ground state) of n-PP, the lowest triplet state of n-PP and the ground states of the cation and anion of n-PP are found to exhibit some multi-reference character. Overall, the electronic and optical properties of n-PP obtained from the ωB97 and ωB97X functionals are in excellent agreement with the available experimental data.

Mass spectrometry and photoelectron spectroscopy of o-, m-, and p-terphenyl cluster anions: the effect of molecular shape on molecular assembly and ion core character

Mass spectrometry and photoelectron spectroscopy of o-, m-, and p-terphenyl cluster anions, (o-TP)n(-) (n = 2-100), (m-TP)n(-) (n = 2-100), and (p-TP)n(-) (n = 1-100), respectively, are conducted to investigate the effect of molecular shape on the molecular aggregation form and the resultant ion core character of the clusters. For (o-TP)n(-) and (m-TP)n(-), neither magic numbers nor discernible isomers are observed throughout the size range. Furthermore, their vertical detachment energies (VDEs) increase up to large n and depend linearly on n(-1/3), implying that they possess a three-dimensional (3D), highly reorganized structure encompassing a monomeric anion core. For (p-TP)n(-), in contrast, prominent magic numbers of n = 5, 7, 10, 12, and 14 are observed, and the VDEs show pronounced irregular shifts below n = 10, while they remain constant above n = 14 (isomer A). These results can be rationalized with two-dimensional (2D) orderings of p-TP molecules and different types of 2D shell closure at n = 7 and 14, the monomeric and multimeric anion core, respectively. Above n = 16, the new feature (isomer B) starts to appear at the higher binding side of isomer A, and it becomes dominant with n, while isomer A gradually disappears for larger sizes. In contrast to isomer A, the VDEs of isomer B continuously increase with the cluster size. This characteristic size evolution suggests that the transition to modified 2D aggregation forms from 2D ones occurs at around n = 20.

Cooperative molecular field effect and induced orientational ordering effect in polar liquid crystalline films on metals

Using the in situ measurements of the surface potential built across the evaporated liquid crystalline 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) films on metal electrodes with different work functions, we studied the cooperative molecular field effect (CMFE) that assists carrier injection from electrodes and the induced orientational reordering in evaporated liquid crystalline molecules on metals. The surface potential increased, and then became constant after the 5CB monomolecular layer was formed. It was shown that the CMFE accompanying orientational reordering accounts for the metal work function dependence of the surface potential. Finally, the orientational reordering is discussed in terms of the anchoring energy.
