Synthesis and catalytic activity of heterobimetallic Au/M (M = RhIII, IrIII) complexes with ditopic mono- and triphosphane ligands

A series of heterobimetallic complexes Au/M (M = RhIII, IrIII) were prepared on the basis of two ditopic ligands: a monophosphane ligand L1H and a triphosphane ligand L2H. The complexes were fully characterised, including single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Catalytic activity of cationic L1/AuI/IrIII and L2/AuI/IrIII bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide was analysed through their capacity to induce allenyl ether rearrangement and cycloisomerisation of N-propargyl benzamide. While cationic L1/AuI/IrIII showed some ability to induce allenyl ether rearrangement, no conversion was observed for cationic L2/AuI/IrIII. Similarly, N-propargyl benzamide could undergo cycloisomerisation in the presence of cationic L1/AuI/IrIII, whereas cationic L2/AuI/IrIII was again inactive. These findings highlight how crucial the surroundings of the metal centre are to the catalytic activity. Catalytic activity is only possible when Au has a free coordination site; the gold complex becomes inactive when the tridentate ligand is present.

A Powerful P-N Connection: Preparative Approaches, Reactivity, and Applications of P-Stereogenic Aminophosphines

For more than five decades, P-stereogenic aminophosphine chalcogenides and boranes have attracted scientific attention and are still in the focus of ongoing research. In the last years, novel transition metal-based synthesis methods have been discovered, in addition to the long-known use of chiral auxiliaries. Enantiomerically pure compounds with N-P+ -X- (X=O, S, BH3 ) motifs served as valuable reactive building blocks to provide new classes of organophosphorus derivatives, thereby preserving the stereochemical information at the phosphorus atom. Over the years, intriguing applications in organocatalysis and transition metal catalysis have been reported for some representatives. Asymmetric reductions of C=C, C=N, and C=O double bonds were feasible with selected P-stereogenic aminophosphine oxides in the presence of hydrogen transfer reagents. P-stereogenic aminophosphine boranes could be easily deprotected and used as ligands for various transition metals to enable catalytic asymmetric hydrogenations of olefins and imines. This review traces the emergence of a synthetically and catalytically powerful functional compound class with phosphorus-centered chirality in its main lines, starting from classical approaches to modern synthesis methods to current applications.

UV induced hydrophosphination of dimethyl 2-vinylcyclopropane-1,1-dicarboxylate towards phosphine chalcogenides

Dimethyl 2-vinylcyclopropane-1,1-dicarboxylate underwent a hydrophosphination reaction with either a primary or secondary phosphine under photolytic conditions. Notably, a free radical initiator was not required. The resulting tertiary phosphines were derivatized using S₈ to afford moisture and air stable yellow or colorless oils in a 27%-73% isolated yield. A series of control reactions were performed, and we propose that this UV induced hydrophosphination reaction proceeds through a radical mechanism.

Why does thionating a carbonyl molecule make it a better electron acceptor?

The past decade has witnessed a surge of biomedical and materials applications of thiocarbonyl molecules (R₂CS), such as in photodynamic therapy, organic field-effect transistors, and rechargeable batteries. The success of these applications originates from thiocarbonyl's small optical gap in the visible region and the enhanced electron affinity compared to the carbonyl analogues (R₂CO). Although these observations seem to be contrary to the implication based on a simple electronegativity consideration (2.58 for sulfur and 3.44 for oxygen), a natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis gives a straightforward explanation for the LUMO-lowering effect of CO → CS substitution. In comparison to the valence (2p)_C/(2p)_O interactions in CO, the higher 3p orbital of sulfur and its weaker overlap with the 2p level of carbon result in a weaker antibonding interaction in NBO, a prominent contributor to the LUMO. Such an analysis also provides a semi-quantitative understanding of the electronic effect of substituents on or in π-conjugation with a (thio)carbonyl functionality. The intuitive concepts uncovered here offer a simple rule to predict the electronic properties of π-conjugated molecules that incorporate heavy heteroelements and would facilitate materials development.

Reactivity Studies of Phosphinines: The Selenation of Diphenyl-Phosphine Substituents and Formation of a Chelating Bis(Phosphinine) Palladium(II) Complex

Phosphinines and donor-substituted phosphinines are of recent interest due to their use in homogeneous catalysis. In this article, a Pd(II) bis(phosphinine) complex was characterised and phosphorus–selenium coupling constants were used to assess the donor properties of the diphenylphosphine substituents of phosphinine ligands to promote their further use in catalysis. The selenation of 2,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)-3,6-dimethylphosphinine (5) and 2-diphenylphosphino-3-methyl-6-trimethylsilylphosphinine (6) gave the corresponding phosphine selenides 8 and 9, respectively, leaving the phosphinine ring intact. Multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and single crystal X-ray diffraction confirmed the oxidation of all the diphenylphosphine substituents with 1JP-Se coupling constants determined to be similar to SePPh3, indicating that the phosphinine rings were electronically similar to phenyl substituents. Solutions of 6 were found to react with oxygen slowly to produce the phosphine oxide 10 along with other by-products. The reaction of [bis{3-methyl-6-(trimethylsilyl)phosphinine-2-yl}dimethylsilane] (4) with [PdCl2(COD)] gave the chelating dichloropalladium(II) complex, as determined by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and an elemental analysis. The molecular structure of the intermediate 2 in the formation of 4,6-di(tert-butyl)-1,3,2-diazaphosphinine (3) was also determined, which confirmed the structure of the diazaphosphacycle P(Cl){N=C(tBu)CH=C(tBu)-N(H)}.
