Role of H2O Adsorption in CO Oxidation over Cerium-Oxide Cluster Anions (CeO2)nO- (n = 1-4)

Water (H2O) is ubiquitous in the environment and inevitably participates in many surface reactions, including CO oxidation. Acquiring a fundamental understanding of the roles of H2O molecules in CO oxidation poses a challenging but pivotal task in real-life catalysis. Herein, benefiting from state-of-the-art mass-spectrometric experiments and quantum chemical calculations, we identified that the dissociation of a H2O molecule on each of the cerium oxide cluster anions (CeO2)nO- (n = 1-4) at room temperature can create a new atomic oxygen radical (O•-) that then oxidizes a CO molecule. The size-dependent reactivity of H2O-mediated CO oxidation on (CeO2)nO- clusters was rationalized by the orbital compositions (O2p) and energies of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals of active O•- radicals modified by H2O dissociation. Our findings not only provide new insights into H2O-mediated CO oxidation but also demonstrate the importance of H2O in modulating the reactivity of the O•- radicals.

Copper-based electro-catalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia from water: Mechanism, preparation, and research directions

Global water bodies are increasingly imperiled by nitrate pollution, primarily originating from industrial waste, agricultural runoffs, and urban sewage. This escalating environmental crisis challenges traditional water treatment paradigms and necessitates innovative solutions. Electro-catalysis, especially utilizing copper-based catalysts, known for their efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and eco-friendliness, offer a promising avenue for the electro-catalytic reduction of nitrate to ammonia. In this review, we systematically consolidate current research on diverse copper-based catalysts, including pure Cu, Cu alloys, oxides, single-atom entities, and composites. Furthermore, we assess their catalytic performance, operational mechanisms, and future research directions to find effective, long-term solutions to water purification and ammonia synthesis. Electro-catalysis technology shows the potential in mitigating nitrate pollution and has strategic importance in sustainable environmental management. As to the application, challenges regarding complexity of the real water, the scale-up of the commerical catalysts, and the efficient collection of produced NH3 are still exist. Following reseraches of catalyst specially on long term stability and in situ mechanisms are proposed.

High-Entropy Oxides: A New Frontier in Photocatalytic CO2 Hydrogenation

Herein, we investigate the potential of nanostructured high-entropy oxides (HEOs) for photocatalytic CO2 hydrogenation, a process with significant implications for environmental sustainability and energy production. Several cerium-oxide-based rare-earth HEOs with fluorite structures were prepared for UV-light driven photocatalytic CO2 hydrogenation toward valuable fuels and petrochemical precursors. The cationic composition profoundly influences the selectivity and activity of the HEOs, where the Ce0.2Zr0.2La0.2Nd0.2Sm0.2O2-δ catalyst showed outstanding CO2 activation (14.4 molCO kgcat-1 h-1 and 1.27 mol CH 3 OH kgcat-1 h-1) and high methanol and CO selectivity (7.84% CH3OH and 89.26% CO) under ambient conditions with 4 times better performance in comparison to pristine CeO2. Systematic tests showed the effect of a high-entropy system compared to midentropy oxides. XPS, in situ DRIFTS, as well as DFT calculation elucidate the synergistic impact of Ce, Zr, La, Nd, and Sm, resulting in an optimal Ce3+/Ce4+ ratio. The observed formate-routed mechanism and a surface with high affinity to CO2 reduction offer insights into the photocatalytic enhancement. While our findings lay a solid foundation, further research is needed to optimize these catalysts and expand their applications.

Safe-Shields: Basal and Anti-UV Protection of Human Keratinocytes by Redox-Active Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles Prevents UVB-Induced Mutagenesis

Cerium oxide nanoparticles (nanoceria), biocompatible multifunctional nanozymes exerting unique biomimetic activities, mimic superoxide-dismutase and catalase through a self-regenerating, energy-free redox cycle driven by Ce3+/4+ valence switch. Additional redox-independent UV-filter properties render nanoceria ideal multitask solar screens, shielding from UV exposure, simultaneously protecting tissues from UV-oxidative damage. Here, we report that nanoceria favour basal proliferation of primary normal keratinocytes, and protects them from UVB-induced DNA damage, mutagenesis, and apoptosis, minimizing cell loss and accelerating recovery with flawless cells. Similar cell-protective effects were found on irradiated noncancerous, but immortalized, p53-null HaCaT keratinocytes, with the notable exception that here, nanoceria do not accelerate basal HaCaT proliferation. Notably, nanoceria protect HaCaT from oxidative stress induced by irradiated titanium dioxide nanoparticles, a major active principle of commercial UV-shielding lotions, thus neutralizing their most critical side effects. The intriguing combination of nanoceria multiple beneficial properties opens the way for smart and safer containment measures of UV-induced skin damage and carcinogenesis.

Mechanistic Investigation of Enhanced Catalytic Selectivity toward Alcohol Oxidation with Ce Oxysulfate Clusters

Ceria-based materials have been highly desired in photocatalytic reactions due to their redox properties and strong oxygen storage and transfer ability. Herein, we report the structures of one CeCe₇₀ oxysulfate cluster and four MCe₇₀ clusters (M = Cu, Ni, Co, and Fe) with the same Ce₇₀ core. As noted, single-crystal X-ray diffraction confirmed the structures of CeCe₇₀ and the MCe₇₀ series, while Raman spectroscopy indicated an increase in oxygen defects upon the introduction of Cu and Fe ions. The clusters catalyzed the oxidation of 4-methoxybenzyl alcohol under ultraviolet light. CuCe₇₀ and FeCe₇₀ exhibited enhanced reactivity compared to CeCe₇₀ and improved aldehyde selectivity compared to control experiments. In comparison with their homogeneous congeners, the CeCe₇₀/MCe₇₀ clusters altered the location of radical generation from the bulk solution to the clusters' surfaces. Mechanistic studies highlight the role of oxygen defects and specific transition metal introduction for efficient photocatalysis. The mechanistic pathway in this study provides insight into how to select or design a highly selective catalyst for photocatalysis.
