Abstract
Catalytic transformation of ubiquitous C-H bonds into valuable C-N bonds offers an efficient synthetic approach to construct N-functionalized molecules. Over the last few decades, transition metal catalysis has been repeatedly proven to be a powerful tool for the direct conversion of cheap hydrocarbons to synthetically versatile amino-containing compounds. This Review comprehensively highlights recent advances in intra- and intermolecular C-H amination reactions utilizing late transition metal-based catalysts. Initial discovery, mechanistic study, and additional applications were categorized on the basis of the mechanistic scaffolds and types of reactions. Reactivity and selectivity of novel systems are discussed in three sections, with each being defined by a proposed working mode.

Abstract
An apparent intramolecular cross-dehydrogenative coupling of N-(3-hydroxy)monoanilide of maleic esters comprising base promoted phenoxide cyclization and subsequent base-mediated aerobic oxidation was developed to synthesize a variety of 2-(6-hydroxy-2-oxoindolin-3-ylidene)acetate derivatives. The isolation of intermediate cyclized products during the large scale reactions and their ready dehydrogenation with 1 equiv of base support this proposed two-step path.

Abstract
We report a bio-inspired approach to the synthesis of oxindoles, which couples the energetic requirements of dehydrogenative C–N bond formation to the reduction of oxygen.
Nitrogen-containing heterocycles are fundamentally important to the function of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and materials. Herein, we report a bio-inspired approach to the synthesis of oxindoles, which couples the energetic requirements of dehydrogenative C–N bond formation to the reduction of molecular oxygen (O2). Our method is inspired by the biosynthesis of melanin pigments (melanogenesis), but diverges from the biosynthetic polymerization. Mechanistic analysis reveals the involvement of CuII-semiquinone radical intermediates, which enable dehydrogenative carbon–heteroatom bond formation that avoids a catechol/quinone redox couple. This mitagates the deleterious polarity reversal that results from phenolic dearomatization, and enables a high-yielding phenolic C–H functionalization under catalytic aerobic conditions. Our work highlights the broad synthetic utility and efficiency of forming C–N bonds via a catalytic aerobic dearomatization of phenols, which is currently an underdeveloped transformation.

Abstract

This
paper reports a room temperature visible light photocatalyzed
method for the C–H amination of arenes and heteroarenes. A
key enabling advance in this work is the design of N-acyloxyphthalimides as precursors to nitrogen-based radical intermediates
for these transformations. A broad substrate scope is presented, including
the selective meta-amination of pyridine derivatives.
A radical aromatic substitution mechanism is proposed.

Abstract
The development of a novel intermolecular oxidative amination reaction, a synthetic transformation that involves the simultaneous functionalization of both a N-H and C-H bond, is described. The process, which is mediated by an I(III) oxidant and contains no metal catalysts, provides a rapid and green method for synthesizing protected anilines from simple arenes and phthalimide. Mechanistic investigations indicate that the reaction proceeds via nucleophilic attack of the phthalimide on an aromatic radical cation, as opposed to the electrophilic aromatic amination that has been reported for other I(III) amination reactions. The application of this new reaction to the synthesis of a variety of substituted aniline derivatives is demonstrated.

Abstract
Recent developments in catalytic C-H amination are discussed in this feature article. The careful design of reagents and catalysts now provides efficient conditions for exquisitely selective intramolecular as well as intermolecular nitrene C-H insertion. The parallel emergence of C-H activation/amination reactions opens new opportunities complementary to those offered by nitrenes.
