Transition Metal Catalyzed Hiyama Cross-Coupling: Recent Methodology Developments and Synthetic Applications

Hiyama cross-coupling is a versatile reaction in synthetic organic chemistry for the construction of carbon-carbon bonds. It involves the coupling of organosilicons with organic halides using transition metal catalysts in good yields and high enantioselectivities. In recent years, hectic progress has been made by researchers toward the synthesis of diversified natural products and pharmaceutical drugs using the Hiyama coupling reaction. This review emphasizes the recent synthetic developments and applications of Hiyama cross-coupling.

Recent Advances of Pd/C-Catalyzed Reactions

The Pd/C-catalyzed reactions, including reduction reactions and cross-coupling reactions, play an irreplaceable role in modern organic synthesis. Compared to the homogeneous palladium catalyst system, the heterogeneous Pd/C catalyst system offers an alternative protocol that has particular advantages and applications. Herein, a review on Pd/C-catalyzed reactions is presented. Both the advances in Pd/C-catalyzed methodologies and the application of Pd/C-catalysis in total synthesis are covered in this review.

Visible-Light-Promoted C2 Selective Arylation of Quinoline and Pyridine N-Oxides with Diaryliodonium Tetrafluoroborate

A protocol of visible-light-promoted C2 selective arylation of quinoline and pyridine N-oxides, with diaryliodonium tetrafluoroborate as an arylation reagent, using eosin Y as a photocatalyst for the construction of N-heterobiaryls was presented. This methodology provided an efficient way for the synthesis of 2-aryl-substituted quinoline and pyridine N-oxides. This strategy has the following advantages: specific regioselectivity, simple operation, good functional group tolerance, and high to moderate yields under mild conditions.

Continuous-Flow Suzuki-Miyaura and Mizoroki-Heck Reactions under Microwave Heating Conditions

Microwave-assisted continuous-flow reactions have attracted significant interest from synthetic organic chemists, especially process chemists from practical points of view, due to a less complicated shift to large-scale synthesis based on simple and continuous access to products with low energy requirements. In this personal account, we focused on the Suzuki-Miyaura and Mizoroki-Heck reactions, both of which are significantly important cross-coupling reactions for the synthesis of various functional materials. Microwave power is effective for heating. Typical homogeneous palladium catalysts, such as PdCl₂ (PPh₃ )₂ , Pd(PPh₃ )₄ , and Pd(OAc)₂ , as well as heterogeneous palladium catalysts, such as Pd-film, Pd/Al₂ O₃ , Pd/SiO₂ , and Pd supported on polymers, can be used for these reactions.

A General Palladium-Catalyzed Hiyama Cross-Coupling Reaction of Aryl and Heteroaryl Chlorides

A general palladium-catalyzed Hiyama cross-coupling reaction of aryl and heteroaryl chlorides with aryl and heteroaryl trialkoxysilanes by a Pd(OAc)2 /L2 catalytic system is presented. A newly developed water addition protocol can dramatically improve the product yields. The conjugation of the Pd/L2 system and the water addition protocol can efficiently catalyze a broad range of electron-rich, -neutral, -deficient, and sterically hindered aryl chlorides and heteroaryl chlorides with excellent yields within three hours and the catalyst loading can be down to 0.05 mol % Pd for the first time. Hiyama coupling of heteroaryl chlorides with heteroaryl silanes is also reported for the first time. The reaction can be easily scaled up 200 times (100 mmol) without any degasification and purification of reactants; this facilitates the practical application in routine synthesis.

Pd(II)-Catalyzed C3-Selective Arylation of Pyridine with (Hetero)arenes

Palladium catalyzed, nondirected C3-selective arylation of pyridines with arenes and heteroarenes in the presence of 1,10-phenanthroline as the ligand has been developed. The optimized conditions allow for a highly C3-selective arylation of pyridines, affording various 3,3'-bipyridines and 3-arylpyridines.

Very efficient and broad-in-scope palladium-catalyzed Hiyama cross-coupling. The role of water and copper(i) salts

A very high-yielding Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling between aryl halides and aryl(trialkoxy)silanes is achieved in the presence of Cu(i) and a measured amount of water.

Palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of arylsiloxanes with aryl halides: application to solid-supported organic synthesis

The solid-phase version of the Pd-catalyzed Hiyama reaction between a variety of aryltriethoxysilanes and immobilized aryl halides was developed. Smooth cross-coupling was achieved to afford the corresponding biaryl products in moderate to excellent yields. The described protocol would be particularly useful for the construction of 4'-substituted 1,1'-biphenyl derivatives.
