Stretching of immersed polyelectrolyte brushes in shear flow

The way that polymer brushes respond to shear flow has important implications in various applications, including antifouling, corrosion protection, and stimuli-responsive materials. However, there is still much to learn about the behaviours and mechanisms that govern these responses. To address this gap in knowledge, our study uses in situ X-ray reflectivity to investigate how poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) brushes stretch and change in different environments, such as isopropanol (a poor solvent), water (a good solvent), and aqueous solutions containing various cations (Cs+, Ba2+, La3+, and Y3+). We have designed a custom apparatus that exposes the PSS brushes to both tangential shear forces from the primary flow and upward drag forces from a secondary flow. Our experimental findings clearly show that shear forces have a significant impact on how the chains in PSS brushes are arranged. At low shear rates, the tangential shear force causes the chains to tilt, leading to brush contraction. In contrast, higher shear rates generate an upward shear force that stretches and expands the chains. By analysing electron density profiles obtained from X-ray reflectivity, we gain valuable insights into how the PSS brushes respond structurally, especially the role of the diffuse layer in this dynamic behaviour. Our results highlight the importance of the initial chain configuration, which is influenced by the solvent and cations present, in shaping how polymer brushes respond to shear flow. The strength of the salt bridge network also plays a crucial role in determining how easily the brushes can stretch, with stronger networks offering more resistance to stretching. Ultimately, our study aims to enhance our understanding of polymer physics at interfaces, with a particular focus on practical applications involving polymer brushes.

Macroion adsorption-electrokinetic and optical methods

Recent studies on macroion adsorption at solid/liquid interfaces evaluated by electrokinetic and optical methods are reviewed. In the first section a description of electrokinetic phenomena at a solid surface is briefly outlined. Various methods for determining both static and dynamic properties of the electrical double layer, such as the appropriate location of the slip plane, are presented. Theoretical approaches are discussed concerning quantitative interpretation of streaming potential/current measurements of homogeneous macroscopic interfaces. Experimental results are presented, involving electrokinetic characteristics of bare surfaces, such as mica, silicon, glass etc. obtained from various types of electrokinetic cells. The surface conductivity effect on zeta potential is underlined. In the next section, various theoretical approaches, proposed to determine a distribution of electrostatic potential and flow distribution within macroion layers, are presented. Accordingly, the influence of the uniform as well as non-uniform distribution of charges within macroion layer, the dissociation degree, and the surface conductance on electrokinetic parameters are discussed. The principles, the advantages and limits of optical techniques as well as AFM are briefly outlined in Section 4. The last section is devoted to the discussion of experimental data obtained by streaming potential/current measurements and optical methods, such as reflectometry, ellipsometry, surface plasmon resonance (SPR), optical waveguide lightmode spectroscopy (OWLS), colloid enhancement, and fluorescence technique, for mono- and multilayers of macroions. Results of polycations (PEI, PAMAM dendrimers, PAH, PDADMAC) and polyanions (PAA, PSS) adsorption on mica, silicon, gold, and PTFE are quantitatively interpreted in terms of theoretical approaches postulating the three dimensional charge distribution or the random sequential adsorption model (RSA). Macroion bilayer formation, experimentally examined by streaming current measurements, and theoretically interpreted in terms of the comprehensive formalism is also reviewed. The utility of electrokinetic measurements, combined with optical methods, for a precise, in situ characteristics of macroion mono- and multilayer formation at solid/liquid interfaces is pointed out.

Molecular dynamics simulations of cylindrical polyelectrolyte brushes in monovalent and multivalent salt solutions

Molecular dynamics simulations are applied to investigate the cylindrical polyelectrolyte brushes in monovalent and multivalent salt solutions. By varying the salt valence and concentration, the brush thickness, shape factor of grafted chains, and distributions of monomers and ions in the solutions are studied. The simulation results show that the single osmotic pressure effect in the brush leads to changes in conformation in the presence of monovalent salt, while the ion exchange effect induces the collapse of the brushes in the multivalent salt solutions. Furthermore, the snapshots combined with the distributions of the end-monomers and the mean bond angles demonstrate a nonuniform stretching picture of the grafted chains, which is different with the chains tethered on the planar surface. The charge ratios between the ions trapped in the brush and the monomers are also calculated to elucidate the details of ion exchange process.

Anion-specific effects on the behavior of pH-sensitive polybasic brushes

The anion-specific solvation and conformational behavior of weakly basic poly(2-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (poly(DMA)), poly(2-diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (poly(DEA)), and poly(2-diisopropylamino)ethyl methacrylate (poly(DPA)) brushes, with correspondingly increasing inherent hydrophobicity, have been investigated using in situ ellipsometric and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) measurements. In the osmotic brush regime, as the initial low concentration of salt is increased, the brushes osmotically swell by the uptake of solvent as they become charged and the attractive hydrophobic inter- and intrachain interactions are overcome. With increased ionic strength, the brushes move into the salted brush regime where they desolvate and collapse as their electrostatic charge is screened. Here, as the brushes collapse, they transition to more uniform and rigid conformations, which dissipate less energy, than similarly solvated brushes at lower ionic strength. Significantly, in these distinct regimes brush behavior is not only ionic strength dependent but is also influenced by the nature of the added salt based on its position in the well-known Hofmeister or lyotropic series, with potassium acetate, nitrate, and thiocyanate investigated. The strongly kosmotropic acetate anions display low affinity for the hydrophobic polymers, and largely unscreened electrosteric repulsions allow the brushes to remain highly solvated at higher acetate concentrations. The mildly chaotropic nitrate and strongly chaotropic thiocyanate anions exhibit a polymer hydrophobicity-dependent affinity for the brushes. Increasing thiocyanate concentration causes the brushes to collapse at lower ionic strength than for the other two anions. This study of weak polybasic brushes demonstrates the importance of all ion, solvent, and polymer interactions.

Measurement of the electrostatic interaction between polyelectrolyte brush surfaces by optical tweezers

We demonstrated an optical tweezers method to measure the electrostatic interaction between the strong polyelectrolyte brushes, poly(2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyltrimethylammonium chloride) (PMTAC), grafted on silica particles in aqueous media. The weak electrostatic interaction was successfully detected with a resolution of less than 0.1 μN m(-1). The apparent Debye length, including the charge distribution in the polymer brush and the surface potential, decreased as the salt concentration in the medium increased. The experimentally obtained surface charge density was much smaller than that estimated from the amount of polyelectrolyte on the surface. Furthermore, the dissociation of ionic groups was enhanced by decreasing the grafting density of the polyelectrolyte brush. The results suggest that the majority of chloride counterions was immobilized in the dense polyelectrolyte brush layer to neutralize the high charge density.
