Abstract
Helichrysum italicum (Roth) G. Don is a typical Mediterranean plant, with limited distribution on the islands of Sardinia, Corsica, and the Iberian Peninsula, as well as the islands of the Adriatic Sea and the Balkan Peninsula. In these regions, H. italicum is mainly collected from spontaneous nature, while in recent years, there has been a pronounced cultivation trend due to increased demand and market requirements for constant quality of raw materials. Bearing in mind that biological activity is linked with chemical composition, this review aimed to collect data from different scientific databases (Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar) on the antimicrobial activity of essential oil and its chemical composition. A total of 20 papers investigating the antibacterial, antibiofilm, and antifungal activities of H. italicum essential oil were found. Furthermore, in these samples, several compounds occurred as dominant: neryl acetate, α-pinene, and γ-curcumene. These compounds are known for their antimicrobial properties, which likely contribute to the essential oil's efficacy against various microbial strains.

Abstract
Background Physician patients requiring surgery present with occupational risks and personality traits that may affect outcomes. This study compared implant survivorship, complications, and clinical outcomes of physicians undergoing primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) or total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Methods A retrospective review of our institutional total joint registry identified 185 physicians undergoing primary THA (n = 94) or TKA (n = 91). Physicians were matched 1:2 with nonphysician controls according to age, sex, body mass index, joint (hip or knee), and surgical year. Physician type (medical, n = 132 vs surgical, n = 53) subanalysis was performed. Implant survivorship was assessed via Kaplan-Meier methods. Clinical outcomes were evaluated by Harris hip scores and Knee Society Scores. Mean follow-up was 5 years. Results There was no significant difference in 5-year implant survivorship free of any reoperation (P > .5) or any revision (P > .2) between physician and nonphysician patients after THA and TKA. Similarly, the 90-day complication risk was not significantly different after THA or TKA (P = 1.0 for both). Physicians and nonphysicians demonstrated similar improvement in Harris hip scores (P = .6) and Knee Society Scores (P = .4). When comparing physician types, there was no difference in implant survivorship (P > .4), complications (P > .6), or patient reported outcomes (P > .1). Conclusions Physician patients have similar implant survivorship, complications, and clinical outcomes when compared to nonphysicians after primary THA and TKA. Physicians should feel reassured that their profession does not appear to increase risks when undergoing lower extremity total joint arthroplasty.

Abstract
Staphylococcus epidermidis, a major skin bacterium, can cause opportunistic infections. Use of antimicrobial agents against Cutibacterium acnes for acne treatment becomes a risk factor for emergence of antimicrobial-resistant skin bacteria. In this study, the impact of antimicrobial treatment of acne vulgaris on S. epidermidis antimicrobial resistance was assessed. A total of 344 S. epidermidis strains isolated from patients with acne vulgaris who visited hospital (165 strains) and dermatological clinics (179 strains), respectively, were analyzed. Except for doxycycline, the resistance rates were higher in strains isolated from patients who had used antimicrobials for acne treatment than in those isolated from patients who had not used antimicrobials. The prevalence rates of strains with erm(C) from patients who used macrolides and clindamycin (hospital, 78.0%; clinics, 61.3%) and those of strains with tet(M) from patients who used tetracyclines (hospital, 27.5%; clinics, 42.4%) were significantly higher than those of strains from patients who did not use antimicrobials (p < 0.05). All strains with erm(A) (8/8) and 91.7% strains with erm(C) (156/170) showed high-level resistance to macrolides and clindamycin (MIC ≥256 μg/mL). Furthermore, almost all strains with tet(M) showed resistance to minocycline. Our results showed that the use of antimicrobials for acne treatment may lead to an increased prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant S. epidermidis. In particular, the emergence of minocycline-resistant strains with tet(M) owing to the use of tetracyclines (doxycycline and minocycline) is a critical issue. Appropriate antimicrobial use for acne treatment may be an important strategy to prevent the emergence of antimicrobial-resistant skin bacteria.

Abstract
Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) have emerged as major pathogens in healthcare-associated facilities, being S. epidermidis, S. haemolyticus and, more recently, S. lugdunensis, the most clinically relevant species. Despite being less virulent than the well-studied pathogen S. aureus, the number of CoNS strains sequenced is constantly increasing and, with that, the number of virulence factors identified in those strains. In this regard, biofilm formation is considered the most important. Besides virulence factors, the presence of several antibiotic-resistance genes identified in CoNS is worrisome and makes treatment very challenging. In this review, we analyzed the different aspects involved in CoNS virulence and their impact on health and food.

Abstract
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a serious problem worldwide. We searched for the AMR determinants of various bacteria isolated from clinical settings and studied their resistance mechanisms and molecular epidemiology. This review focuses on the AMR of Staphylococcus aureus, a major gram-positive pathogen, which has the ability to acquire resistance to antimicrobials. The resistance factors of S. aureus are frequently found on mobile elements, including plasmids and transposons. We determined the complete DNA sequence of the tetracycline-resistance plasmid and found that the inducible expression of tetK in S. aureus was regulated by a post-transcriptional attenuation mechanism. Furthermore, outbreaks of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in hospitals and communities have led us to study infection controls, including the antiseptic susceptibility evaluation and molecular epidemiology of MRSA. Various antiseptic resistance determinants, such as qacA/B and smr, were identified on plasmids and characterized. We demonstrated that the plasmid-mediated efflux pump QacB variant QacIII confers fluoroquinolone efflux ability to S. aureus. Studies on MRSA epidemiology had shown that community-acquired MRSA (CA-MRSA) was disseminated into hospitals and that an increased use of alcohol-based rubs could reduce the incidence of MRSA infections in such institutions. Additionally, the study of CA-MRSA collected from communities and hospitals showed an increase in Panton-Valentine leucocidin (PVL)-positive CA-MRSA, causing severe skin and soft tissue infections. Moreover, various PVL-positive CA-MRSA clones have disseminated in Japan, whereas the USA300 LV/J clone evolved in that country. Our study provides important information regarding MRSA infection control.

Abstract
Currently, antimicrobial-resistant staphylococci, particularly methicillin-resistant
Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP), are frequently isolated from
canine superficial pyoderma in Japan. However, little is known regarding the nasal
prevalence of MRSP in pet dogs. Here, we determined the prevalence of
antimicrobial-resistant staphylococci in nares and affected sites of pet dogs with
superficial pyoderma. Of the 125 nares and 108 affected sites of pet dogs with superficial
pyoderma, 107 (13 species) and 110 (eight species) staphylococci strains, respectively,
were isolated. The isolation rate of S. pseudintermedius from pyoderma
sites (82/110 strains, 74.5%) was significantly higher than that from nares (57/107
strains, 53.3%) (P<0.01). Notably, the prevalence of MRSP (18/57
strains, 31.6%) in nares was equivalent to that in pyoderma sites (28/82 strains, 34.1%).
Furthermore, the phenotypes and genotypes of antimicrobial resistance in MRSP strains from
nares were similar to those from pyoderma sites. Our findings revealed that the prevalence
of antimicrobial-resistant staphylococci in the nares of pet dogs with superficial
pyoderma is the same level as that in affected sites. Therefore, considerable attention
should be paid to the antimicrobial resistance of commensal staphylococci in companion
animals.

Abstract
The aim of our study was the two-stage synthesis of 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives. The first step was the synthesis of hydrazide-hydrazones from 3-methyl-4-nitrobenzhydrazide and the corresponding substituted aromatic aldehydes. Then, the synthesized hydrazide-hydrazones were cyclized with acetic anhydride to obtain new 3-acetyl-2,3-disubstituted-1,3,4-oxadiazolines. All of obtained compounds were tested in in vitro assays to establish their potential antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity. Our results indicated that few of the newly synthesized compounds had some antimicrobial activity, mainly compounds 20 and 37 towards all used reference bacterial strains (except Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and fungi. These substances showed a strong or powerful bactericidal effect, especially against Staphylococcus spp. belonging to Gram-positive bacteria. Compound 37 was active against Staphylococcus epidermidis at minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) = 0.48 µg/mL and was characterized by low cytotoxicity. This compound possessed quinolin-4-yl substituent in the second position of 1,3,4-oxadiazole ring and 3-methyl-4-nitrophenyl in position 5. High effectiveness and safety of these derivatives make them promising candidates as antimicrobial agents. Whereas the compound 20 with the 5-iodofurane substituent in position 2 of the 1,3,4-oxadiazole ring showed the greatest activity against S. epidermidis at MIC = 1.95 µg/mL.

Abstract
Objectives Methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative Staphylococci (MR-CoNS) are recognized as one of the major causes of healthcare-associated infections in hospitals. The present investigation aimed to study the prevalence of Staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) types, along with aminoglycoside modifying enzymes (AMEs) genes in the nasal carriage of MR-CoNS in the north-west of Iran. Materials and Methods To assess the potential of coagulase-negative Staphylococci as hidden reservoirs for antibiotic resistance, we analyzed the antimicrobial susceptibility of MR-CoNS using the disk diffusion method. In addition, PCR and multiplex PCR assays were performed to determine the prevalence of AME encoding genes and SCCmec types in methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative Staphylococci isolates. Results A total of 51 MR-CoNS isolates were recovered from the anterior nares of healthcare workers. The observed resistance rates to tobramycin, gentamicin, cotrimoxazole, kanamycin, erythromycin, tetracycline, and ciprofloxacin were 74.5%, 68.5%, 57%, 53%, 51%, 49%, and 8%, respectively. Of the 51 tested MR-CoNS isolates, 2(4%) were harboring SCCmec type I, four (8%) were type II, six (12%) type III, eleven (21.6%) type IVa, two (4%) type IVb, two (4%) type IVc, six (12%) type IVd, and two (4%) type V. The rates of prevalence of the aminoglycoside modifying enzyme genes were as follows: aac (6')/aph (2'') (28 cases, 55 %), ant (4')-Ia (20 cases, 39%), and the aph (3´)-IIIa gene (9 cases, 17.6 %). Conclusion Subtypes IVa and IVd were the most prevalent SCC elements, and aac (6')/aph (2'') was the most common AME gene detected among the MR-CoNS isolates.

Abstract
The objective of this research was to determine the antimicrobial resistance of bacteria isolated from items related to hygiene and antisepsis, equipment, and instruments used in different hospital wards. Bacterial isolation and identification, phenotypic antimicrobial susceptibility assays, mecA gene detection, and multiple antimicrobial resistance index analysis were performed. In total, 105 bacteria were isolated from 138 items. Of these, 49.52% bacteria were collected from instruments, 43.80% from equipment, and 6.66% from items related to hygiene and antisepsis. All gram-positive bacteria (88 isolates) were identified as coagulase-negative Staphylococcus. Five species of gram-negative bacilli (17 isolates) were isolated, and the prevalence of Enterobacter agglomerans (29.41%), Escherichia coli (11.76%), and Serratia liquefaciens (11.76%) was high. Antimicrobial resistance was reported for 93.33% of the isolates. Gram-positive bacteria were resistant to sulfazotrim (88.64%) and penicillin (82.95%), while gram-negative bacteria showed resistance to sulfazotrim (70.59%) and ampicillin (64.71%). Analysis of multiple antibiotic resistance index showed that 73.33% of the isolates were a high risk to public health. The mecA gene was detected in 23 (71.88%) isolates. The evaluation of microorganisms isolated in the hospital environment revealed their high multidrug resistance index. Thus our study presses the need to pay more attention to the cleanliness of frequently used instruments, which may be potential sources of infections.
