Abstract
Postoperative adhesion (PA) is currently one of the most unpleasant complications following surgical procedures. Researchers have developed several new strategies to alleviate the formation of PA to a great extent, but so far, no single measure or treatment can meet the expectations and requirements of clinical patients needing complete PA prevention. Chinese medicine (CM) has been widely used for thousands of years based on its remarkable efficacy and indispensable advantages CM treatments are gradually being accepted by modern medicine. Therefore, this review summarizes the formating process of PA and the efficacy and action mechanism of CM treatments, including their pharmacological effects, therapeutic mechanisms and advantages in PA prevention. We aim to improve the understanding of clinicians and researchers on CM prevention in the development of PA and promote the in-depth development and industrialization process of related drugs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Peritoneal adhesions (PA) are a common complication of abdominal operations. A growing body of evidence shows that inhibition of inflammation and fibrosis at sites of peritoneal damaging could prevent the development of intra-abdominal adhesions. METHODS A search of PubMed, Medline, CINAHL and Embase databases was performed using the keywords 'postsurgical adhesion', 'post-operative adhesion', 'peritoneal adhesion', 'surgery-induced adhesion' and 'abdominal adhesion'. Studies detailing the use of pharmacological and non-pharmacological agents for peritoneal adhesion prevention were identified, and their bibliographies were thoroughly reviewed to identify further related articles. RESULTS Several signaling pathways, such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha, tissue plasminogen activator, and type 1 plasminogen activator inhibitor, macrophages, fibroblasts, and mesothelial cells play a key part in the development of plasminogen activator. Several therapeutic approaches based on anti-PA drug barriers and traditional herbal medicines have been developed to prevent and treat adhesion formation. In recent years, the most promising method to prevent PA is treatment using biomaterial-based barriers. CONCLUSION In this review, we provide an overview of the pathophysiology of adhesion formation and various agents targeting different pathways, including chemical agents, herbal agents, physical barriers, and clinical trials concerning this matter.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Among several noninvasive evaluation methods of portal hypertension (PH), the measurement of spleen stiffness is a reliable method for predicting esophageal variceal bleeding; however, the underlying mechanisms for increased stiffness remain unclear. We attempted to elucidate the pathological changes to the spleen and the underlying mechanisms in patients with PH. METHODS Histological examination was performed using splenic tissues from 42 patients with PH who underwent laparoscopic splenectomy, and the results were compared with those from patients without PH. RESULTS In addition to splenic sinus congestion, diffuse fibrosis was detected in the splenic cords in the red pulp of patients with PH. The degree of the fibrosis was well correlated with severity in thrombocytopenia and splenomegaly. Cells expressing α-smooth muscle actin dramatically increased in the splenic cord. Cytoglobin (Cygb) expression was detected in human splenic cords as reported in animal reticular cells, and fluorescent double immunostaining revealed that these cells expressed α-smooth muscle actin in patients with PH, suggesting transformation of Cygb-expressing cells to myofibroblastic cells. Expression levels of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase (NOX) 2, nitrotyrosine, and transforming growth factor-β were markedly upregulated in the red pulp of patients with PH, implying a significant role of oxidative stress in the mechanism for splenic fibrosis. CONCLUSION Splenic fibrosis progresses along with advancement of PH. Cygb-expressing cells in the splenic cord possibly participate in this process through mechanisms including oxidative stress.

Abstract
Background: Alcohol consumption is capable of producing free radicals and inducing disturbance in body antioxidant. Falcaria vulgaris (F. vulgaris) is a vegetable and it has beneficial antioxidant effects. Materials and Methods: Forty-eight Wistar rats were divided randomly into eight groups (n = 6): control normal (saline) and ethanol (5g EtOH/kg body weight/24h) control groups, F. vulgaris groups (50, 100, and 150mg/kg), and F. vulgaris + ethanol treated groups (50, 100, and 150mg/kg). Treatments were administered intraperitoneally and through gavage daily for 12 weeks. Parameters related to the function and the histology of the kidneys were evaluated and statistically analyzed from kidney and blood serum samples with respect to the groups. Results: Ethanol administration increased significantly Bowman’s space, qualitative histopathology indices, kidney malondialdehyde (MDA) level, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, and nitrite oxide levels and decreased significantly total antioxidant capacity (TAC) level and diameter and number of renal corpuscles compared to that in the control normal group (P < 0.001). The F. vulgaris and F. vulgaris + ethanol treatments in a dose-dependent manner reduced significantly Bowman’s space, qualitative histopathology indices, kidney MDA level, BUN, creatinine, and nitrite oxide levels and increased significantly TAC level and diameter and number of renal corpuscles compared to that in the ethanol normal group (P < 0.001). Conclusion: It seems that F. vulgaris administration in a dose-dependent manner improved kidney injury induced by ethanol in rats.
