Abstract
Thermodynamic acidity constants and limiting ionic mobilities were determined for polyprotic non-chromophore analytes using capillary electrophoresis with capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection. It was not necessary to work with buffers of identical ionic strength as ionic strength effects on effective electrophoretic mobilities were corrected by modeling during data evaluation (software AnglerFish). The mobility data from capillary electrophoresis coupled to conductivity detection were determined in the pH range from 1.25 to 12.02 with a high resolution (36 pH steps). With this strategy, thermodynamic acidity constants and limiting ionic mobilities for various acidic herbicides were determined, sometimes for the first time. The model analytes included glyphosate, its metabolites, and its acetylated derivates (aminomethyl phosphonic acid, glyoxylic acid, sarcosine, glycine, N-acetyl glyphosate, N-acetyl aminomethyl phosphonic acid, hydroxymethyl phosphonic acid). The obtained data were used in simulations to optimize separations by capillary electrophoresis. Simulations correlated very well to experimental results. With the new method, the separation of glyphosate from interfering components like phosphate in beer samples was possible.

Titanium dioxide-coated core-shell silica microspheres-based solid-phase extraction combined with sheathless capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry for analysis of glyphosate, glufosinate and their metabolites in baby foods. Abstract
Because of their extremely low amount in complex samples, it is quite challenging to accurate determine residues of phosphorus-containing amino-acid-like herbicides (PAAHs) in food products. Here we develop novel core-shell mesoporous silica (CSMS) microspheres coated by titanium dioxide (CSMS@TiO2) for extraction and enrichment of PAAHs in baby foods. After the dispersive solid phase extraction (d-SPE), sheathless capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry (sheathless CE-MS) is utilized to achieve efficient separation and sensitive detection. The synthesized CSMS@TiO2 composites are characterized by various spectroscopic techniques, proving TiO2 is uniformly distributed onto the channel surface of CSMS. The composites have essential features that are favorable for adsorption of the analytes on the material for d-SPE, including uniform diameter (1.0 μm with a shell thickness of 133 nm), large perpendicular mesopores (15.6 nm), high surface area (101.1 m2/g) and large pore volume (0.4 cm3/g). Taking glyphosate, glufosinate and their main metabolites (aminomethylphosphonic acid and 3-methylphosphinicopropionic acid) as analytes, selective and efficient enrichment is achieved by CSMS@TiO2-based d-SPE through the affinity interaction between titanium dioxide and phosphate groups. Sensitive detection of target compounds is achieved with low limits of quantitation (LOQs) between 0.3-1.6 ng/mL and excellent inter/intra-day repeatability. The compounds in nine different commercial baby foods from local markets are analyzed using the proposed method. Good recoveries of 82.3-102.6% are achieved with low RSDs (n = 5) of 2.1-8.3%. Our study indicates that the proposed CSMS@TiO2-based d-SPE combined with sheathless CE-MS is an accurate and reliable approach for sensitive determination of trace-amount PAAHs and their metabolites in complex samples.

Capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry for the direct analysis of glyphosate: method development and application to beer beverages and environmental studies. Abstract
In this study, we developed and validated a CE-TOF-MS method for the quantification of glyphosate (N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine) and its major degradation product aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) in different samples including beer, media from toxicological analysis with Daphnia magna, and sorption experiments. Using a background electrolyte (BGE) of very low pH, where glyphosate is still negatively charged but many matrix components become neutral or protonated, a very high separation selectivity was reached. The presence of inorganic salts in the sample was advantageous with regard to preconcentration via transient isotachophoresis. The advantages of our new method are the following: no derivatization is needed, high separation selectivity and thus matrix tolerance, speed of analysis, limits of detection suitable for many applications in food and environmental science, negligible disturbance by metal chelation. LODs for glyphosate were < 5 μg/L for both aqueous and beer samples, the linear range in aqueous samples was 5-3000 μg/L, for beer samples 10-3000 μg/L. For AMPA, LODs were 3.3 and 30.6 μg/L, and the linear range 10-3000 μg/L and 50-3000 μg/L, for aqueous and beer samples, respectively. Recoveries in beer samples for glyphosate were 94.3-110.7% and for AMPA 80.2-100.4%. We analyzed 12 German and 2 Danish beer samples. Quantification of glyphosate and AMPA was possible using isotopically labeled standards without enrichment, purification, or dilution, only degassing and filtration were required for sample preparation. Finally, we demonstrate the applicability of the method for other strong acids, relevant in food and environmental sciences such as N-acetyl glyphosate, N-acetyl AMPA (present in some glyphosate resistant crop), trifluoroacetic acid, 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid, glufosinate and its degradation product 3-(methylphosphinico)propionic acid, oxamic acid, and others.

Glyphosate analysis using sensors and electromigration separation techniques as alternatives to gas or liquid chromatography. Anal Bioanal Chem 2017; 410:725-746. Abstract
Since its introduction in 1974, the herbicide glyphosate has experienced a tremendous increase in use, with about one million tons used annually today. This review focuses on sensors and electromigration separation techniques as alternatives to chromatographic methods for the analysis of glyphosate and its metabolite aminomethyl phosphonic acid. Even with the large number of studies published, glyphosate analysis remains challenging. With its polar and depending on pH even ionic functional groups lacking a chromophore, it is difficult to analyze with chromatographic techniques. Its analysis is mostly achieved after derivatization. Its purification from food and environmental samples inevitably results incoextraction of ionic matrix components, with a further impact on analysis derivatization. Its purification from food and environmental samples inevitably results in coextraction of ionic matrix components, with a further impact on analysis and also derivatization reactions. Its ability to form chelates with metal cations is another obstacle for precise quantification. Lastly, the low limits of detection required by legislation have to be met. These challenges preclude glyphosate from being analyzed together with many other pesticides in common multiresidue (chromatographic) methods. For better monitoring of glyphosate in environmental and food samples, further fast and robust methods are required. In this review, analytical methods are summarized and discussed from the perspective of biosensors and various formats of electromigration separation techniques, including modes such as capillary electrophoresis and micellar electrokinetic chromatography, combined with various detection techniques. These methods are critically discussed with regard to matrix tolerance, limits of detection reached, and selectivity.

Abstract
The number of glyphosate intoxication cases has been increased after the regulation of paraquat. Unfortunately, there are no reports on the potential concentration of glyphosate for those acute intoxicated patients admitted to emergency rooms and the correlation between the concentration of glyphosate and clinical symptoms in Korea up to our knowledge. As a nonselective herbicide, analysis of glyphosate requires derivatization because of its amphoteric and strongly polar nature. In order to develop a method to determine the concentration of glyphosate and its metabolite, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) in blood samples without derivatization, liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was utilized with a hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) column. The validation of this method showed that the limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantitation (LOQs) for glyphosate and AMPA were 50 and 100ng/mL, respectively. In addition, matrix effect, recovery rate, and accuracy and precision in intra and inter-day were evaluated during the validation study of this method. Blood samples acquired from five glyphosate intoxicated patients were analyzed to investigate the correlation between the concentration of glyphosate and clinical symptoms. These patients were previously admitted to the emergency room at a University Hospital in Korea after glyphosate was self-administered in suicide attempts or by accident. As results of blood sample study, the concentration of glyphosate and AMPA were found in the range of 1.0-171.1 and 0.2-2.6μg/mL, respectively. The concentration ratio of glyphosate to AMPA was 55-71. According to the clinical reports for those patients, they were in the age between 47 and 82 years old and administered about 50-400mL. The blood samples were collected within 2-5h after administration of glyphosate. Among the intoxicated patients, the most common clinical symptom was metabolic acidosis, identified in four patients. The comparison between the concentration of glyphosate and administered dosage did not show the correlation, which suggests further investigation on the effects of surfactants in glyphosate from different vendors.

Abstract
Nowadays, owing to the increasing population and the attempts to satisfy its needs, pesticides are widely applied to control the quantity and quality of agricultural products. However, the presence of pesticide residues and their metabolites in environmental samples is hazardous to the health of humans and all other living organisms. Thus, monitoring these compounds is extremely important to ensure that only permitted levels of pesticide are consumed. To this end, fast, reliable, and environmentally friendly methods that can accurately analyze dilute, complex samples containing both parent substances and their metabolites are required. Focusing primarily on research published since 2010, this review summarizes the use of various sample pretreatment techniques to extract pesticides from various matrices, combined with on-line preconcentration strategies for sensitivity improvement, and subsequent capillary electrophoresis analysis.

Abstract
This paper reports a method for rapid, simple, direct, and reproducible determination of glyphosate and its major metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA). The platform described herein uses polyester-toner microchips incorporating capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection and electrophoresis separation of the analytes. The polyester-toner microchip presented 150 μm-wide and 12 μm-deep microchannels, with injection and separation lengths of 10 and 40 mm long, respectively. The best results were obtained with 320 kHz frequency, 4.5 Vpp excitation voltage, 80 mmol/L CHES/Tris buffer at pH 8.8, injection in -1.0 kV for 7 s, and separation in -1.5 kV. RSD values related to the peak areas for glyphosate and AMPA were 1.5 and 3.3% and 10.1 and 8.6% for intra- and interchip assays, respectively. The detection limits were 45.1 and 70.5 μmol/L, respectively, without any attempt of preconcentration of the analytes. Finally, the method was applied to river water samples in which glyphosate and AMPA (1.0 mmol/L each) were added. The recovery results were 87.4 and 83.7% for glyphosate and AMPA, respectively. The recovery percentages and LOD values obtained here were similar to others reported in the literature.

Abstract
We developed a simple and rapid method for the simultaneous determination of phosphorus-containing amino acid herbicides (glyphosate, glufosinate, bialaphos) and their major metabolites, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) and 3-methylphosphinicopropionic acid (MPPA), in human serum. Serum samples were filtrated through an ultrafiltration membrane to remove proteins. The filtrate was then washed with chloroform, and injected into a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) system. Chromatographic separation was achieved on a hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) column. Determination of the target herbicides and metabolites was successfully carried out without derivatization or solid phase extraction (SPE) cartridge clean-up. The recoveries of these compounds, added to human serum at 0.2μg/mL, ranged from 94% to 108%, and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) were within 5.9%. The limits of detection (LODs) were 0.01μg/mL for MPPA, 0.02μg/mL for AMPA, 0.03μg/mL for both glyphosate and glufosinate, and 0.07μg/mL for bialaphos, respectively.

Abstract
We describe a new practical capillary electrophoresis/electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (CE/ESI-MS) method for the forensic analysis of phosphorus-containing amino acid-type herbicides, glyphosate (GLYP), glufosinate (GLUF) and bialaphos (BIAL). A new sheathless interface, a high sensitivity porous sprayer (HSPS), was used in this study. The limits of detections of GLYP, GLUF and BIAL were 7.6, 0.61 and 0.57 pg, respectively. These values were 4-36 times lower than these obtained by conventional CE/ESI-MS using a sheath liquid. The developed method was successfully applied to the analysis of beverages spiked with the herbicides.
