Abstract
BACKGROUND Older adults who engage in group sports and exercises achieve greater health benefits than those who exercise by themselves. The benefits of group participation may vary depending on the type of sports/exercise they engage in. The present study aimed to identify the association between specific sports and exercise types performed in groups and evaluate the longitudinal changes in multidimensional frailty scores among community-dwelling older adults in Japan. METHODS We used 3-year follow-up data from the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study and analyzed 33,746 men and 36,799 women aged ≥ 65 years. To elucidate the relationship between participation in 20 types of group sports/exercises in 2016 (baseline) and the change in frailty score (using the Kihon Checklist, KCL) from 2016 to 2019, we performed linear regression analyses through multivariate adjustments for age group, self-rated health, marital status, living alone, occupational status, years of education, alcohol drinking status, smoking status, equivalent income, and disease status using an inverse probability weighting method. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS The mean change in KCL scores over 3 years was + 0.62 and + 0.61 points in men and women, respectively, implying the degree of frailty worsened. The sports/exercise types that significantly prevented increments in KCL scores for both sexes compared to non-participants were hiking (men: B, - 0.36; women: B, - 0.29), walking (men: B, - 0.26; women: B, - 0.24), tennis (men: B, - 0.23; women: B, - 0.24), ground golf (men: B, - 0.21; women: B, - 0.19), and weight exercises (men: B, - 0.19; women: B, - 0.16). CONCLUSION Participation in specific sports and exercise groups offer significant physical and psychological benefits for frailty prevention among older adults in Japan. The results of this study may offer substantive evidence to encourage older adults to participate in group activities for the prevention of multidimensional frailty. It will also help public health stakeholders to decide which type of sports and exercise groups to promote in a community.

Abstract
Background The number of elderly sports participants is increasing, and the possibility of return to sport (RTS) has become an important part of surgical decision making in this population. Purpose To investigate RTS after elective spinal surgery in elderly patients. Study Design Case series; Level of evidence, 4. Methods We enrolled patients aged ≥65 years with a history of preoperative or preinjury sports participation who underwent elective spinal surgery at a single institution between 2019 and 2021. At minimum 12-month follow-up, a questionnaire was administered to each participant to assess postoperative RTS, timing of return, frequency and type of pre- and postoperative activities, and satisfaction (scored 1-10). Descriptive statistical analyses were performed, and regression models were developed to examine the influence of age and sex, as well as surgical site, on RTS. Results A total of 53 patients (mean ± SD age, 73.8 ± 5.2 years; 24 women) were included, and 23 (43.4%) returned to sports at a median 6 months (interquartile range, IQR, 2-6 months). The RTS rate by surgical site was 17 of 34 (50%) for the lumbar spine and 6 of 17 (35.3%) for the cervical spine. There were no statistically significant differences in RTS rate by surgical site, age, or sex. Overall, 6 of 17 patients returned to golf, 4 of 6 to dance, 2 of 5 to swimming, and 1 of 5 to tennis. Of patients who returned, 34.8% participated in sports 5 times per week and 26.1% participated 3 times per week. The median satisfaction score after RTS was 8 (IQR, 6-9). Conclusion RTS after spinal surgery was achieved in 43% patients at 1-year minimum follow-up, with high satisfaction scores. More than half of the returning patients participated in sports activities ≥3 times per week.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To estimate the prevalence of depression symptoms and quality of life (QoL) and examined the influence of factors in the empty nest elderly. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study, which was conducted from February 2022 to May 2022. We recruited a convenience sample of no empty-nest elderly and empty-nest elderly (≥60 years) living in Chengdu. QoL was assessed using WHOQOL-BREF, Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) was used to assess depression symptoms. Multivariable logistic regression was used to analyze data between independent variables with depression symptoms. RESULTS Two thousand twenty-six participants were included in this study, 39.0% (660/1,082) experienced depression symptoms among empty-nest elderly. Age (aOR, 1.02; 95% CI, 1.00-1.04; P = 0.046), chronic disease≥2 (aOR, 3.29; 95% CI, 2.50-4.33; P < 0.001) were associated with increased risk of depression symptoms, and physical activity (aOR, 0.59; 95% CI, 0.40-0.87; P = 0.008), physical health (aOR, 0.93; 95% CI, 0.88-0.99; P = 0.026), psychological health (aOR, 0.93; 95% CI, 0.87-0.98; P = 0.013), and total score (aOR, 0.97; 95% CI, 0.96-0.99; P < 0.001) were associated with decreased risk of depression symptoms among empty-nest elderly. CONCLUSIONS Depression symptoms are common mental health problems among empty-nest elderly. We found that age, chronic disease ≥2 and physical activity were important factors that have an impact on depressive symptoms. Empty-nest elderly would have lowered QoL score.
