Adsorption characteristics of SO2 onto novel activated carbon fixed bed: kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics and washing regeneration

The problem of SO2 pollution in industrial flue gas has brought great pressure to environmental governance. In this study, a new type of activated carbon fixed bed device was designed and built for flue gas desulfurization. The results showed that activated carbons (AC1-AC5) were microporous activated carbons with abundant functional groups on the surface, and the desulfurization performance was ranked as AC1 > AC2 > AC3 > AC4 > AC5. The specific surface area of AC1 was as high as 624.98 m2/g, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 29.03 mg·g-1 under the optimum reaction conditions. The Freundlich adsorption isotherm model and Bangham pore diffusion model are more suitable for describing the dynamic adsorption process of SO2 on AC1. Combined with thermodynamic research, it is shown that the adsorption process of SO2 is a spontaneous, exothermic, and chaotic reduction process, which is mainly a physical adsorption between single-layer adsorption and multi-layer adsorption. Finally, the desulfurization-washing regeneration cycle experiment results showed that the regeneration rate of AC1 increases with the washing time and washing temperature, up to 95%, which provides data reference for industrial application.

Maximizing Adsorption Involving Three Solutes on Enhanced Adsorbents Using the Mixture-Process Variable Design

Unmodified (UN), acid-treated (AT) and microwave-acid-treated (MAT) activated carbons were optimized for their solute removal efficacies by adjusting feed mixture compositions and process conditions. Acetaminophen, benzotriazole, and caffeine were used either individually or as binary/ternary mixtures in this study. The process conditions considered were the pH, adsorbent dosage, and type of adsorbent. Experimental responses such as total adsorbent loading (q _total) and total percentage removal (PR_total) were fitted with empirical models that had high adjusted R ² (>0.95), insignificant lack of fit (p-value > 0.22), and high model predictive R ² (>0.93). Mixture compositions of the feed were found to interact significantly not only among themselves but with process variables as well. Hence, adsorption optimization must simultaneously consider mixture as well as process variables. The conventional response surface methodology for mixtures, termed as ridge analysis, optimizes mixture compositions at specified values of process variables. An improved steepest ascent method which considers mixture and process variables simultaneously was developed in this work. This could track the path of steepest ascent toward globally optimal settings, from any arbitrary starting point within the design space. For the chosen adsorbent, optimal settings for feed mixture compositions and pH were found to change along this steepest ascent path. The feed compositions, pH, and adsorbent dosage identified for maximum adsorbent utilization were usually quite different from those identified for maximum total percentage removal. When both these objectives were optimized together, the most favorable compromise solutions for q _total and PR_total were, respectively, 264.1 mg/g and 43.4% for UN, 294.9 mg/g and 52.5% for AT, and 336.6 mg/g and 55.9% for MAT.

Converting Ni-loaded biochars into supercapacitors: Implication on the reuse of exhausted carbonaceous sorbents

Biochar derived from waste biomass has proven as a promising sorbent for removal of heavy metals from wastewater. However, proper disposal of such a heavy metal-containing biochar is challengeable. The major objective of this study is to create a reuse way by converting the heavy metal-loaded biochar into supercapacitor. Two biochars were produced from dairy manure and sewage sludge, respectively, and subjected to sorption of Ni from solution, and then the Ni-loaded biochar underwent microwave treatments for fabrication of supercapacitor. The specific capacitance of biochar supercapacitor increased with Ni loading, especially the Ni-loaded biochar further treated with microwave in which the capacitance increased by over 2 times, compared to the original biochar supercapacitors. The increase of capacitance in the Ni-loaded biochar supercapacitor following microwave treatment was mainly attributed to the conversion of Ni into NiO and NiOOH, which was evidenced by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The biochar supercapacitors, especially microwave-treated Ni-loaded biochar supercapacitors exhibited the high stability of specific capacitance, with less than 2% loss after 1000 charge-discharge cycles. This study demonstrated that Ni-loaded biochar can be further utilized for generation of supercapacitor, providing a potential way for the reuse of exhausted carbonaceous sorbents.
