Multivariate disturbance filtering in auditory fNIRS signals using maximum likelihood gradient estimation method: Feasibility study using sound quality indices

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) technology has been widely used to analyze biomechanics and diagnose brain activity. Despite being a promising tool for assessing the brain cortex status, this system is susceptible to disturbances and noise from electrical instrumentation and basal metabolism. In this study, an alternative filtering method, maximum likelihood generalized extended stochastic gradient (ML-GESG) estimation, is proposed to overcome the limitations of these disturbance factors. The proposed algorithm was designed to reduce multiple disturbances originating from heartbeats, breathing, shivering, and instrumental noises as multivariate parameters. To evaluate the effectiveness of the algorithm in filtering involuntary signals, a comparative analysis was conducted with a conventional filtering method, using hemodynamic responses to auditory stimuli and psycho-acoustic factors as quality indices. Using auditory sound stimuli consisting of 12 voice sources (six males and six females), the fNIRS test was configured with 18 channels and conducted on 10 volunteers. The psycho-acoustic factors of loudness and sharpness were used to evaluate physiological responses to the stimuli. Applying the proposed filtering method, the oxygenated hemoglobin concentration correlated better with the psychoacoustic analysis of each auditory stimulus than that of the conventional filtering method.

Measuring Cortical Activity During Auditory Processing with Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is an optical, non-invasive neuroimaging technique that investigates human brain activity by calculating concentrations of oxy- and deoxyhemoglobin. The aim of this publication is to review the current state of the art as to how fNIRS has been used to study auditory function. We address temporal and spatial characteristics of the hemodynamic response to auditory stimulation as well as experimental factors that affect fNIRS data such as acoustic and stimulus-driven effects. The rising importance that fNIRS is generating in auditory neuroscience underlines the strong potential of the technology, and it seems likely that fNIRS will become a useful clinical tool.

Towards neural correlates of auditory stimulus processing: a simultaneous auditory evoked potentials and functional magnetic resonance study using an odd-ball paradigm

Background

The neural underpinnings of auditory information processing have often been investigated using the odd-ball paradigm, in which infrequent sounds (deviants) are presented within a regular train of frequent stimuli (standards). Traditionally, this paradigm has been applied using either high temporal resolution (EEG) or high spatial resolution (fMRI, PET). However, used separately, these techniques cannot provide information on both the location and time course of particular neural processes. The goal of this study was to investigate the neural correlates of auditory processes with a fine spatio-temporal resolution. A simultaneous auditory evoked potentials (AEP) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) technique (AEP-fMRI), together with an odd-ball paradigm, were used.

Material/Methods

Six healthy volunteers, aged 20–35 years, participated in an odd-ball simultaneous AEP-fMRI experiment. AEP in response to acoustic stimuli were used to model bioelectric intracerebral generators, and electrophysiological results were integrated with fMRI data.

Results

fMRI activation evoked by standard stimuli was found to occur mainly in the primary auditory cortex. Activity in these regions overlapped with intracerebral bioelectric sources (dipoles) of the N1 component. Dipoles of the N1/P2 complex in response to standard stimuli were also found in the auditory pathway between the thalamus and the auditory cortex. Deviant stimuli induced fMRI activity in the anterior cingulate gyrus, insula, and parietal lobes.

Conclusions

The present study showed that neural processes evoked by standard stimuli occur predominantly in subcortical and cortical structures of the auditory pathway. Deviants activate areas non-specific for auditory information processing.

Vector-based phase classification of initial dips during word listening using near-infrared spectroscopy

This study examined the classification of initial dips during passive listening to single words by analysis of vectors of deoxyHb and oxyHb measurements simultaneously derived from near-infrared spectroscopy. The initial dip response during a single-word 1.5-s task in 13 healthy participants was significant only in the language area, which includes the left posterior superior temporal gyrus and angular gyrus. Event-related vectors of responses to comprehended words moved significantly into phase 4, a dip phase, whereas vectors of responses to unknown words moved into a nondip phase (P<0.05). The same results were reproduced after previously unknown words were learnt by the participants. Among the five dip phases, reflecting variations in transient oxygen metabolic regulation during a task, the frequency of occurrence of hypoxic-ischemic initial dips (decreased oxyHb) was around three times that of the canonical dip (increased deoxyHb and oxyHb). Phase classification of event-related vectors enhances the slight amount of oxygen exchange that occurs in word recognition, which has been difficult to detect because of its small amplitude.
