Adsorption behavior of rhamnolipid modified magnetic Co/Al layered double hydroxide for the removal of cationic and anionic dyes

In the present research, magnetic rhamnolipid-Co/Al layered double hydroxide (MR-LDH) was synthesized to uptake methylene blue (MB) and reactive orange 16 (RO16) from aqueous solution. The main parameters, including pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, and initial analyte concentration, were optimized to achieve the best adsorption efficiency. Accordingly, the elimination of MB on MR-LDH is improved in the basic medium due to the electrostatic interactions between the negative charge of MR-LDH and the positive charge of MB dye. In contrast, the acidic medium (pH = 3) was favored for RO16 adsorption because of hydrogen bonding between the protonated form of azo dye and protonated hydroxyl groups at the surface of MR-LDH. The calculated maximum adsorption capacities for MB and RO16 were 54.01 and 53.04 mg/g at 313 K, respectively. The Langmuir model, which assumes monolayer adsorption on the adsorbent surface, provides the best explanation for the adsorption of both dyes (R² = 0.9991 for MB and R² = 0.9969 for RO16). Moreover, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model best described the adsorption process for MB (R² = 0.9970) and RO16 (R² = 0.9941). The proposed adsorbent maintains stable adsorption performance for four consecutive cycles. After each adsorption process, MR-LDH is easily separated by an external magnet. The findings show that MR-LDH was found to be an excellent adsorbent for the removal of both cationic and anionic organic dyes from aqueous solutions.

Optimization of Congo red dye adsorption from wastewater by a modified commercial zeolite catalyst using response surface modeling approach

In the present work, Zeolite A was modified by using hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMABr) for adsorption of the Congo red (CR) dye from synthetic aqueous solutions. The Modified Zeolite A (MZA) was characterized by XRD, SEM, and FTIR. The influence of solution pH (in the 4-12 range), ionic strength (0.1-1 M), contact time (180 min), initial CR concentration (20-60 mg/L), temperature (24-36 °C), and an adsorbent dose (1-3 g m/L) on the % dye removal and adsorbent capacity were studied. A combined effect of the initial CR concentration and temperature on the CR removal % by MZA was also studied by applying response surface methodology (RSM). Experimental values were in a good agreement with those predicated by a second-order quartic model. A maximum of 99.24% dye removal and adsorbent capacity of 21.11 mg/g was achieved under the following conditions: pH = 7, initial CR concentration = 60 mg/L, temperature = 24 °C, ionic strength = 0.1 M, adsorbent dose = 3 g/L and 90 min contact time. The equilibrium data were subjected to the Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherms, with the latter providing the best fit while kinetic adsorption studies were conducted by applying three models. The results indicated that the removal process was best described by the pseudo-second-order model. The present study demonstrates that modified MZA can be utilized for the highly efficient CR dye removal.

Iron Oxide/Chitosan Magnetic Nanocomposite Immobilized Manganese Peroxidase for Decolorization of Textile Wastewater

Because of its effectiveness in organic pollutant degradation, manganese peroxidase (MnP) enzyme has attracted significant attention in recent years regarding its use for wastewater treatment. Herein, MnP was extracted from Anthracophyllum discolor fungi and immobilized on the surface of magnetic nanocomposite Fe3O4/chitosan. The prepared nanocomposite offered a high surface area for MnP immobilization. The influence of several environmental factors like temperature, pH, as well as storage duration on the activity of the extracted enzyme has been studied. Fourier transmission infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscope (TEM) techniques were used for the characterization of the prepared MnP/Fe3O4/chitosan nanocomposite. The efficiencies of the prepared MnP/Fe3O4/chitosan nanocomposite for the elimination of reactive orange 16 (RO 16) and methylene blue (MB) industrial dyes were determined. According to the results, the immobilization of MnP on Fe3O4/chitosan nanocomposite increases its capacity to decolorize MB and RO 16. This nanocomposite allowed the removal of 96% ± 2% and 98% ± 2% of MB and RO 16, respectively. The reusability of the synthesized nanocomposite was studied for five successive cycles showing the ability to retain its efficiency even after five cycles. Thus, the prepared MnP/Fe3O4/chitosan nanocomposite has potential to be a promising material for textile wastewater bioremediation.

Equilibrium and kinetics studies of Direct blue 71 adsorption from aqueous solutions using modified zeolite

This study deals with the application of Iranian zeolite as a low cost adsorbent for the removal of the Direct blue 71 (DB 71) from colored solution. Important parameters including equilibrium and contact time, initial dye concentration, effect of pH, and zeolite dosage were evaluated. Maximum dye removal was obtained at about 99.8% for 25 mg/L at 120 min of equilibrium. Higher adsorption efficiency of direct dye was obtained at higher dose and acidic pH. To analyze the adsorption equilibrium and kinetic, Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherms as well as four kinetic models encompassing pseudo first-order, pseudo second-order, intraparticle diffusion, and Elovich were evaluated. The Langmuir isotherm ( R2 = 0.995) and pseudo second-order models, gave the best fit to equilibrium experimental data. In Langmuir analysis, the maximum adsorption capacity (qm) by 13.66 mg/g was determined. Finally, the characteristics of zeolite including both natural and modified, such as compositions, surface morphology by X-ray diffraction technique (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were obtained. According to XRF analysis, it was demonstrated that Al2O3 and SiO2 are the most part of natural and modified zeolite. Furthermore, the clinoptilolite was determined as the significant crystalloid phase by XRD pattern.
