Abstract
Hemostatic alterations have been documented in dogs with canine parvoviral enteritis. This study's aims were to measure the standard coagulation parameters, and to assess the relationship between them and the clinical variables in dogs with canine parvoviral enteritis. Nine client-owned dogs with a canine parvoviral infection were included in a prospective, observational clinical study. Clinical score and coagulation status were assessed at admission. All nine dogs showed alterations of three or more standard coagulation variables. A correlation analysis evidenced a significantly high positive correlation between the activated partial thromboplastin time and clinical score. The present study concurs that dogs with canine parvoviral enteritis have coagulation disorders that are detectable by measuring the standard coagulation parameters.

Abstract
Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) is known to induce hypercoagulability and resultant
thromboembolism in dogs. We hypothesized that hypercoagulability would improve if
remission was obtained in dogs with PLE after treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the
changes in the coagulation parameters after treatment in dogs diagnosed with PLE. As
coagulation parameters, prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time
(aPTT), fibrinogen, thrombin-antithrombin complex (TAT), D-dimer, and antithrombin (AT)
were measured. In addition to these parameters, rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM),
which evaluates the comprehensive coagulation and fibrinolysis reactions of whole blood,
was conducted and the data of clotting time (CT), clot formation time (CFT), α angle (α),
maximum clot firmness (MCF) and lysis index at 60 min (LI60) were obtained. Eleven of the
14 dogs diagnosed with PLE were classified as responders to the treatment based on the
changes in their plasma albumin (ALB) concentration after treatment. Significant increase
in CFT and decrease of α and MCF indicating the resolution of hypercoagulability were
found after treatment in responder dogs; however, there was no significant change in the
coagulation and fibrinolysis parameters other than those measured by ROTEM. This study
demonstrated that the hypercoagulability detected by ROTEM was significantly improved
after treatment in dogs with PLE.

Abstract
The goal of this study was to evaluate the suitability of a commercially available D-dimer assay as a diagnostic tool for testing dogs. This assay is an immunoturbidimetric diagnostic test, capable of determining the D-dimer levels in human plasma by using 2B9 monoclonal antibody. Plasma samples of clinically healthy (n = 20) and tumour-bearing (n = 50) dogs were measured. The tumours were grouped on the basis of histological type and aggressiveness, and then the measured D-dimer concentrations of these groups were compared to those of the control group. The differences were analysed statistically. For benign tumours, we did not find alterations in the D-dimer levels. However, in the case of malignant tumours (lymphoma, sarcoma, and carcinoma) and in the presence of metastases, significantly elevated D-dimer levels were measured. The assay proved to be suitable for measuring the D-dimer levels in plasma samples of dogs. The calculated reference range for dogs was confirmed to be between 0.06 and 0.69 µg/mL fibrinogen equivalent unit.

Abstract
Computed tomographic (CT) angiography, the gold standard for diagnosing portal vein
thrombosis (PVT) in humans, is poorly documented in dogs. Therefore, we retrospectively
reviewed dogs with PVT diagnosed by CT angiography. Medical records of 13 client-owned
dogs diagnosed with PVT by CT angiography were reviewed. All dogs had chronic PVT, and the
most frequent clinical sign was vomiting (5/13), with pancreatitis the most frequent
concurrent disease (6/13). All dogs tested for plasma D-dimer concentration (12/12)
revealed elevated levels. On CT angiography, a thrombus was detected as a non-contrast
enhancement structure in the portal vessel of 13 dogs. There was no evidence of complete
obstruction of the portal vein in any of the dogs. The median luminal filling of the
portal vein was 60.4%. The thrombus extension was variable among dogs, with a median of
34.9 mm. CT angiography identified the thrombus in the main portal vein of 12/13 dogs and
multiple thrombus formation other than the main portal vein in 9/13 dogs. CT angiography
provided specific information such as detecting the presence, location, and number of PVT
in dogs. Therefore, CT angiography might be useful for the diagnosis and follow-up
evaluation of PVT in dogs.

Abstract
The fibrinolytic system is activated concurrently with coagulation; it regulates haemostasis and prevents thrombosis by restricting clot formation to the area of vascular injury and dismantling the clot as healing occurs. Dysregulation of the fibrinolytic system, which results in hyperfibrinolysis, may manifest as clinically important haemorrhage. Hyperfibrinolysis occurs in cats and dogs secondary to a variety of congenital and acquired disorders. Acquired disorders associated with hyperfibrinolysis, such as trauma, cavitary effusions, liver disease and Angiostrongylus vasorum infection, are commonly encountered in primary care practice. In addition, delayed haemorrhage reported in greyhounds following trauma and routine surgical procedures has been attributed to a hyperfibrinolytic disorder, although this has yet to be characterised. The diagnosis of hyperfibrinolysis is challenging and, until recently, has relied on techniques that are not readily available outside referral hospitals. With the recent development of point-of-care viscoelastic techniques, assessment of fibrinolysis is now possible in referral practice. This will provide the opportunity to target haemorrhage due to hyperfibrinolysis with antifibrinolytic drugs and thereby reduce associated morbidity and mortality. The fibrinolytic system and the conditions associated with increased fibrinolytic activity in cats and dogs are the focus of this review article. In addition, laboratory and point-of-care techniques for assessing hyperfibrinolysis and antifibrinolytic treatment for patients with haemorrhage are reviewed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To characterize clinical and laboratory findings in cats with naturally occurring sepsis, emphasizing hemostasis-related findings, and evaluate these variables for associations with patient outcomes. DESIGN Prospective, observational, clinical study. ANIMALS 31 cats with sepsis and 33 healthy control cats. PROCEDURES Data collected included history; clinical signs; results of hematologic, serum biochemical, and hemostatic tests; diagnosis; and outcome (survival vs death during hospitalization or ≤ 30 days after hospital discharge). Differences between cats with and without sepsis and associations between variables of interest and death were analyzed statistically. RESULTS The sepsis group included cats with pyothorax (n = 10), septic peritonitis (7), panleukopenia virus infection (5), bite wounds (5), abscesses and diffuse cellulitis (3), and pyometra (1). Common clinical abnormalities included dehydration (21 cats), lethargy (21), anorexia (18), pale mucous membranes (15), and dullness (15). Numerous clinicopathologic abnormalities were identified in cats with sepsis; novel findings included metarubricytosis, hypertriglyceridemia, and high circulating muscle enzyme activities. Median activated partial thromboplastin time and plasma D-dimer concentrations were significantly higher, and total protein C and antithrombin activities were significantly lower, in the sepsis group than in healthy control cats. Disseminated intravascular coagulopathy was uncommon (4/22 [18%] cats with sepsis). None of the clinicopathologic abnormalities were significantly associated with death on multivariate analysis. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Cats with sepsis had multiple hematologic, biochemical, and hemostatic abnormalities on hospital admission, including several findings suggestive of hemostatic derangement. Additional research including larger numbers of cats is needed to further investigate these findings and explore associations with outcome.

Abstract
Background The pathomechanism of Angiostrongylus vasorum infection‐associated bleeding diathesis in dogs is not fully understood. Objective To describe rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) parameters in dogs naturally infected with A. vasorum and to compare ROTEM parameters between infected dogs with and without clinical signs of bleeding. Animals A total of 21 dogs presented between 2013 and 2016. Methods Dogs with A. vasorum infection and ROTEM evaluation were retrospectively identified. Thrombocyte counts, ROTEM parameters, clinical signs of bleeding, therapy, and survival to discharge were retrospectively retrieved from patient records and compared between dogs with and without clinical signs of bleeding. Results Evaluation by ROTEM showed hyperfibrinolysis in 8 of 12 (67%; 95% CI, 40–86%) dogs with and 1 of 9 (11%; 95% CI, 2–44%) dogs without clinical signs of bleeding (P = .016). Hyperfibrinolysis was associated with severe hypofibrinogenemia in 6 of 10 (60%; 95% CI, 31–83%) of the cases. Hyperfibrinolysis decreased or resolved after treatment with 10–80 mg/kg tranexamic acid. Fresh frozen plasma (range, 14–60 mL/kg) normalized follow‐up fibrinogen function ROTEM (FIBTEM) maximal clot firmness in 6 of 8 dogs (75%; 95% CI, 41–93%). Survival to discharge was 67% (14/21 dogs; 95% CI, 46–83%) and was not different between dogs with and without clinical signs of bleeding (P = .379). Conclusion and Clinical Importance Hyperfibrinolysis and hypofibrinogenemia were identified as an important pathomechanism in angiostrongylosis‐associated bleeding in dogs. Hyperfibrinolysis and hypofibrinogenemia were normalized by treatment with tranexamic acid and plasma transfusions, respectively.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate whether Huisheng Oral Solution has an anticoagulant effect in a rat model of thrombosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 40 male SD rats were equally and randomly divided into four groups: blank group, model group, and two treatment groups (A and B). Rats were subcutaneously injected with carrageenan to induce thrombosis. Rats in the treatment group A were intragastrically administered with Huisheng Oral Solution at a dose of 2 ml/100 g body weight (once per 8 hours), 72 hours after carrageenan injection, while those in the treatment group B were administered with Huisheng Oral Solution both 72 hours before and after induction of thrombosis. Blood samples were collected 24, 48, and 72 hours after carrageenan injection for measurements of prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), international normalized ratio (INR), fibrinogen (FIB), prothrombin activity (PTA), platelets (PLT), fibrin degradation products (FDPs), and D-dimer. Lung, liver, and mesentery samples were taken 72 hours after carrageenan injection for histopathological analysis. The numbers of microthrombi in sections of different tissue samples were counted under a microscope. Blood parameters among each group were compared using the Welch test, the Kruskal-Wallis test, or the SNK test after testing for normality, while the number of microthrombi was compared using the Bonferroni test. RESULTS Compared to those in the model group, PT, APTT, and INR were significantly prolonged or increased while FIB was significantly reduced at the majority of time points in the two treatment groups (P < 0.05 for all). The levels of FDPs and D-dimer and PLT counts at the majority of time points were significantly lower (P < 0.05 for all), and the numbers of microthrombi in lung, liver, and mesentery samples were significantly decreased (P < 0.05 for all) in the two treatment groups. The above parameters at the majority of time points showed no significant differences between the two treatment groups. CONCLUSIONS Huisheng Oral Solution can significantly improve coagulation parameters, fibrinolysis parameters, and PLT count, and reduce blood hypercoagulability and microthrombosis, suggesting that Huisheng Oral Solution has an anticoagulant effect in a rat model of thrombosis.
