Abstract
OBJECTIVES Evidence indicates left atrial (LA) involvement in vasovagal syncope (VVS). The LA regulates left ventricular filling during the cardiac cycle. We aimed to assess LA function in patients with VVS by 2D speckle-tracking echocardiography. METHODS Sixty-nine consecutive patients with VVS were recruited. Based on the head-up tilt test (HUTT) results, the study population was divided into two groups: HUTT+ (n = 45) and HUTT- (n = 24). Fifty-one consecutive subjects were enrolled as the control group. LA myocardial deformation parameters were measured by 2D speckle-tracking echocardiography to evaluate LA function. RESULTS Maximal, minimal, and pre-P LA volumes were lower in patients with VVS. Strain and strain rate during reservoir, conduit, and contraction phases in VVS patients with HUTT+ or HUTT- were not statistically significantly different from those in the control group. Additionally, the volumetric parameters of LA function showed no difference in statistical significance between the three study groups. CONCLUSIONS While LA phasic function was not different between the two groups of VVS patients with HUTT+ or HUTT- and the control group, LA size during the three LA phases was smaller in patients with VVS.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION No studies have investigated the prognostic value of left atrial stiffness (LASt) estimated using echocardiography in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD). ANIMALS Seventy-two dogs had MMVD and 46 dogs were healthy dogs. MATERIALS AND METHODS Clinical retrospective cohort study. The survival information of MMVD dogs that underwent echocardiographic examination was obtained. The peak velocities of early diastolic transmitral flow (E) and mitral annular motion as determined by pulsed wave Doppler (E') were determined. The left atrial reservoir strain (εS) was determined by two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography of the left atrium. The LASt was estimated by the formula: E/E'/εS. The 95% prediction interval of LASt was computed from the data of the healthy dogs. RESULTS Seventeen dogs having MMVD died of cardiac-related causes with 55 MMVD dogs censored. The MMVD dogs with LASt > its 95% upper prediction limit (LASt > 0.56; n = 26; median survival time, 484 days; 95% confidence interval, 283 days-indeterminable) had shorter survival times (P<0.001) than those with LASt ≤ its 95% upper prediction limit (LASt ≤ 0.56; n = 46; median survival time, >1112 days; 95% confidence interval, indeterminable). Multivariable Cox's proportional hazard analysis demonstrated that the ratio of the left atrial dimension to the aortic annulus dimension and LASt were independent predictors of cardiac-related death among conventional echocardiographic indices, εS and LASt in MMVD dogs. CONCLUSIONS In dogs with MMVD, increased LASt estimated using echocardiography is an independent predictor of cardiac-related death, and LASt can be more useful for prognostication than εS.

Abstract
A 9-year-old spayed female crossbreed cat with chief complaints of anorexia and hypersalivation had high serum concentrations of ammonia and fasting and postprandial total bile acid. Therefore, she was referred to our hospital. On the first evaluation, haematology, serum chemistry, radiography and ultrasonography findings suggested that she had a congenital portosystemic shunt. CT revealed a shunt vessel from the left gastric vein to the left pulmonary vein. During median celiotomy and sternotomy, gross findings and mesenteric portography revealed abnormal vessel shunting from the left gastric vein to the left pulmonary vein. Complete ligation of the shunt vessel was achieved. She recovered without any complications. Postoperative serum chemistry revealed that ammonia and total bile acid levels decreased to within the reference intervals. This report is the first to describe the clinical features and surgical outcome of a cat with a congenital portopulmonary shunt.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine repeatability, reproducibility, and reference intervals of indices of right atrial longitudinal strain (RALS) derived from speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE) in dogs without heart disease. ANIMALS 110 client-owned dogs and 10 laboratory Beagles. PROCEDURES To determine intraobserver within-day (repeatability) and interobserver (reproducibility) coefficients of variation, RALS during ventricular systole (ϵS), ventricular early diastole (ϵE), and atrial systole (ϵA), as derived with STE, were obtained by 2 investigators for 5 randomly selected client-owned dogs and analyzed by linear regression. Reference intervals were estimated from the results of all dogs. Correlations between RALS indices (ϵS, ϵE, and ϵA) and sex, age, body weight, heart rate, and blood pressure were determined. RESULTS RALS derived from STE showed good intraobserver within-day repeatability and interobserver reproducibility, with coefficients of variation of < 20%. Both ϵS and ϵE were significantly negatively correlated with age, but ϵA was not correlated with age. Indices were not correlated with sex, body weight, or blood pressure. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE RALS indices derived from STE were repeatable and reproducible and were affected by the age of dogs without heart disease. Age should be considered in the interpretation of RALS indices in clinical settings. Further studies are needed to apply RALS indices for assessing dogs with heart disease.

Abstract
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia, associated with an increased risk of stroke and heart failure. Acute AF occurs in response to sudden increases of atrial hemodynamic load, leading to atrial stretch. The mechanisms of stretch-induced AF were investigated in large mammals with controversial results. We optimized an approach to monitor rat atrial electrical activity using a red-shifted voltage sensitive dye (VSD). The methodology includes cauterization of the main ventricular coronary arteries, allowing improved atrial staining by the VSD and appropriate atrial perfusion for long experiments. Next, we developed a rat model of acute biatrial dilation (ABD) through the insertion of latex balloons into both atria, which could be inflated with controlled volumes. A chronic model of atrial dilation (spontaneous hypertensive rats; SHR) was used for comparison. ABD was performed on atria from healthy Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats (WKY-ABD). The atria were characterized in terms of arrhythmias susceptibility, action potential duration and conduction velocity. The occurrence of arrhythmias in WKY-ABD was significantly higher compared to non-dilated WKY atria. In WKY-ABD we found a reduction of conduction velocity, similar to that observed in SHR atria, while action potential duration was unchanged. Low-dose caffeine was used to introduce a drop of CV in WKY atria (WKY-caff), quantitatively similar to the one observed after ABD, but no increased arrhythmia susceptibility was observed with caffeine only. In conclusion, CV decrease is not sufficient to promote arrhythmias; enlargement of atrial surface is essential to create a substrate for acute reentry-based arrhythmias.
