Abstract
The distribution of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1)-positive cells in digestive tracts and pancreases of aquatic vertebrates was investigated by immunohistochemical staining method. The results suggested that GLP-1-positive cells were distributed in the columnar mucous epithelium and tubular glands of lamina propria in the digestive system. However, GLP-1-positive cells were also found in subepithelial lamina propria of the mucosae and muscularis in each segment of the digestive tract of Rana nigromaculata. The distribution densities of these cells reached peaks in the stomachs, and the middle or end segments of small intestines of Chinese softshell turtle, Bufo gargarizans, R. nigromaculata and catfish, and there was the third distribution density peak in the rectum of catfish. The total amount or overall density of GLP-1-positive cells varied a lot in the digestive tracts of different animal species. The distribution density was relatively low in the digestive tract of chub and reached the maximum in the digestive tracts of snakehead and catfish, but no GLP-1-positive cells were found in the digestive tract of bighead carp. GLP-1-positive cells were densely distributed in the pancreases of Chinese softshell turtle, B. gargarizans and R. nigromaculata. These cells spread over the superficial layers of islets or scattered in exocrine pancreas in the pancreas of B. gargarizans, spread in the endocrine cells or scattered in the pancreas of Chinese softshell turtle, scattered in the pancreas of R. nigromaculata and distributed in the superficial layers of islets in the pancreas of catfish.

Abstract
Aquatic non-native invasive species are commonly traded in the worldwide water garden and aquarium markets, and some of these species pose major threats to the economy, the environment, and human health. Understanding the potential suitable habitat for these species at a global scale and at regional scales can inform risk assessments and predict future potential establishment. Typically, global habitat suitability models are fit for freshwater species with only climate variables, which provides little information about suitable terrestrial conditions for aquatic species. Remotely sensed data including topography and land cover data have the potential to improve our understanding of suitable habitat for aquatic species. In this study, we fit species distribution models using five different model algorithms for three non-native aquatic invasive species with bioclimatic, topographic, and remotely sensed covariates to evaluate potential suitable habitat beyond simple climate matches. The species examined included a frog (Xenopus laevis), toad (Bombina orientalis), and snail (Pomacea spp.). Using a unique modeling approach for each species including background point selection based on known established populations resulted in robust ensemble habitat suitability models. All models for all species had test area under the receiver operating characteristic curve values greater than 0.70 and percent correctly classified values greater than 0.65. Importantly, we employed multivariate environmental similarity surface maps to evaluate potential extrapolation beyond observed conditions when applying models globally. These global models provide necessary forecasts of where these aquatic invasive species have the potential for establishment outside their native range, a key component in risk analyses.

Abstract
The morphology, distribution and relative frequencies of endocrine cells in the gastrointestinal tract of the barking deer (Muntiacus muntjak) were investigated. The immunohistochemical method employed used seven types of antisera against chromogranin, serotonin, gastrin, cholecystokinin, somatostatin, glucagon and insulin. Chromogranin and serotonin immunoreactive (IR) cells were found throughout the gastrointestinal tract. Conversely, gastrin-IR cells were only found in the oxyntic gland, pyloric gland and duodenum, while cholecystokinin-IR and somatostatin-IR cells were detected in the oxyntic gland, pyloric gland and small intestines. Somatostatin-IR cells were also seen in the caecum. Glucagon-IR cells were found in all parts of the gastrointestinal tract apart from the colon and rectum. No insulin-IR cells were found in the gastrointestinal tract of this species. The cells in the small intestine were generally spindle shaped with long cytoplasmic processes ending in the lumen (open type), while in the stomach and large intestine, they were occasionally round or spherical in shape (closed type). An uncommon distribution pattern of endocrine cells in the gastrointestinal tract of the barking deer was noted for cholecystokinin- and glucagon-IR cells.

Abstract
The diffuse chromaffin enteropancreatic system of nine species of amphibians (newts, frogs) and reptiles (turtles, lizards, snakes) was investigated immunohistochemically for the presence and topographic distribution of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT). The study revealed various numbers of serotonin-producing cells in the pancreas and intestinal epithelium and also immunolabelled nerve profiles in the villi of all species studied. In addition, two different morphological populations of serotonin cells ("open" and "closed") were localized in the functional segments of the intestines in the representative species of all the taxa investigated. Semi-quantitative evaluation of the immunolabelled pancreatic and enteric cells revealed significantly different mean numbers of labelled cells in different amphibian and reptilian taxa, and also between the various successive gut segments of each taxon. The ratio between "open" and "closed" varieties of serotonin cells recorded along the intestines followed a decreasing trend, progressive in lizards and snakes and more abrupt in newts, frogs and turtles. The above findings may help resolve several key stages of the phylogenetic evolution of poikilothermic vertebrates.

Abstract
Distribution patterns and the relative frequency of different types of endocrine cells were demonstrated in the alimentary tract of the grass lizard, Takydromus wolteri, using nine specific antibodies raised against mammalian regulatory peptides. The alimentary tract of the lizard was divided into six portions from the esophagus to the rectum. Most endocrine cells were found in the epithelial lining and were generally spindle shaped with long cytoplasmic processes ending in the lumen (open cell type), whereas cells that were spherical in shape (closed cell type) were occasionally found in gastric, esophageal and intestinal glands. Endocrine cells were stained for the following regulatory peptides: bovine Sp-1/chromogranin (BCG), serotonin, somatostatin, gastrin, cholecystokinin (CCK)-8, glucagon, insulin, human pancreatic polypeptide (HPP) and secretin. Cells stained for BCG and serotonin were present throughout the entire gastrointestinal tract and they occurred with the highest frequency in stomach and pylorus, respectively. Somatostatin-positive cells were detected throughout the entire gastrointestinal tract except for the esophagus and large intestine, and were most predominant in pylorus and duodenum. Cells stained for gastrin were restricted to the pylorus and duodenum and occurred with a relatively low frequency. CCK-8-positive cells were observed from pylorus to small intestine and showed the highest frequency in the pylorus. Glucagon- and insulin-containing cells were located in duodenum and small intestine but were found only rarely. HPP-stained cells were detected in duodenum and small intestine with the highest frequency in duodenum. Cells stained for secretin were restricted to duodenum and were found only rarely. In conclusion, distribution patterns and the relative frequency of these endocrine cells correspond well with previous reports on distribution patterns of endocrine cells in reptile species but some deviating patterns were also observed.

Abstract
AIM: To study the effect of environmental hyperthermia on gastrin, somatostatin and motilin in rat ulcerated antral mucosa.
METHODS: Forty-two Wistar rats were equally divided into six groups, according to the room temperature (high and normal) and the treatment (acetic acid, normal saline and no treatment). Levels of gastrin, somatostatin and motilin in rat ulcerated antral mucosa were measured with a radioimmunoassay method.
RESULTS: The average temperature and humidity were 32.5 °C and 66.7% for the high temperature group, and 21.1 °C and 49.3% for the normal temperature group, respectively. Gastric ulcer model was successfully induced in rat injected with 0.05 mL acetic acid into the antrum. In rats with gastric ulcers, the levels of gastrin and motilin increased, whereas the somatostatin level declined in antral mucosa, compared with those in rats treated with normal saline and the controls. However, the change extent in the levels of gastrin, motilin and somatostatin in antral mucosa was less in the high temperature group than in the normal temperature group.
CONCLUSION: The levels of gastrin, somatostatin and motilin in rat ulcerated antral mucosal tissue remain relatively stable in a high temperature environment, which may relate to the equilibration of the dynamic system.

The alimentary tract of frog was divided into six portions from esophagus to rectum. Most of the cells in the epithelial lining portion, between epithelial cells, were generally spherical or spindle shaped having long cytoplasmic process that was reached to the lumen (open-typed cell) while cells showing round shape (close-typed cell) were also found in the gastric, esophageal or intestinal glands occasionally. All of eight immunoreactive (IR) cells against serotonin, somatostatin, bovine Sp-1/chromogranin (BCG), gastrin, cholecystokinin (CCK)-8, bombesin, glucagon, and human pancreatic polypeptide (HPP) were observed in this study. Serotonin-IR cells were demonstrated throughout whole alimentary tract including esophagus and showed most predominant frequency in antrum. Somatostatin-IR cells were also detected throughout whole alimentary tract including esophagus and showed most predominant in pylorus and antrum. BCG-IR cells were restricted to stomach regions with relatively low frequencies. CCK-8-IR cells were observed from antrum to ileum and showed highest frequency in antrum. Gastrin-IR cells were restricted to antrum with low frequency and bombesin-IR cells were demonstrated from esophagus to antrum with various frequencies. Glucagon-IR cells were located throughout whole alimentary tract except for rectum and showed most predominant frequency at antrum. HPP-IR cells were detected from antrum to ileum with highest frequency in antrum. In conclusion, the regional distribution and relative frequency of these IR cells correspond well to the previous report in anuran species but somewhat peculiar patterns are also detected.
