Use of electrical bioimpedance in the assessment of sarcopenia in the older aldults: A scoping review

OBJECTIVE

to map and synthesize the main evidence on the use of bioelectrical impedance (BIA) and its variables in the assessment of sarcopenia in community-dwelling older adults.

METHODS

This is a scoping review carried out by searching for articles available in four databases: PUBMED, LILACS, Web of Science and CINAHL, with the following search strategy: Body Composition AND Sarcopenia AND ″electric impedance'' OR ″bioelectrical impedance analysis'' AND Aged.

RESULTS

A total of 27,660 older adults made up the sum of the samples of the included studies. Most studies included participants of both sexes (75.6%), used the variable skeletal and/or appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASMM) (75.6%), followed by body fat (8.1%), and phase angle (8.1%) in the assessment of the body composition of subjects with sarcopenia.

CONCLUSION

The data from this research show that ASMM and phase angle are the main variables related to sarcopenia screening in community-dwelling older adults. Whereas total extracellular water/body water is still considered a confounding variable in the screening of sarcopenia in the elderly, but it can be considered useful regarding the health conditions of the elderly in the community.

The Relationship between Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain and Sarcopenia Risk in Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study

BACKGROUND

This study aimed to better understand the relationship between chronic musculoskeletal pain and the risk of sarcopenia in older adults.

METHODS

The risk of sarcopenia was assessed in 210 older adults using the SARC-F (strength, assistance with walking, rising from a chair, ascending stairs, and falls) questionnaire. Geriatric pain measures were used to assess pain. We also recorded the pain sites (ankles/feet, wrists/hands, upper back, lower back, neck, shoulder, hips, and knees).

RESULTS

Participant mean age was 72.4±7 years, and 109 (51.9%) of the participants were female. The prevalence rates of sarcopenia and chronic musculoskeletal pain were 60% and 92.9%, respectively. Older adults at risk of sarcopenia had a higher mean age, body mass index (BMI), number of comorbidities and falls, presence of chronic pain, pain intensity, and pain sites. Sarcopenia risk was correlated with chronic pain intensity (current and last 7 days) (r=0.506, p<0.001 and r=0.584, p< 0.001, respectively), multisite pain (r=0.442, p< 0.001), and Geriatric Pain Measure score (r=0.730; p< 0.001). Age (odds ratio [OR]=1.1; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.0-1.2), BMI (OR=1.1; 95% CI, 1.0-1.2), and geriatric pain (OR=1.1; 95% Cl, 1.0-1.1) were associated with sarcopenia risk.

CONCLUSIONS

The risk of sarcopenia is linked to chronic pain, which frequently occurs in geriatric populations. Our study results also showed that higher pain intensity was associated with a higher risk of sarcopenia. Older adults at risk for sarcopenia often experience chronic musculoskeletal pain, which must be better recognized. Moreover, its significance must be noted in the treatment process.

Association between vasomotor symptoms and sarcopenia assessed by L3 skeletal muscle index among Korean menopausal women

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the association between vasomotor symptoms (VMS), skeletal muscle index (SMI), and sarcopenia in menopausal women.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study included 295 Korean menopausal women 40 to 65 years old who underwent abdominal computed tomography during routine health checkups between January 2014 and May 2016. The cross-sectional areas of adipose and skeletal muscles were measured at the L3 level using computed tomography. The SMI is defined as the sum of the skeletal muscle area (cm2)/height2 (m2). Sarcopenia was identified by an SMI of <34.9 cm2/m2. VMS were assessed using the Menopause Rating Scale.

RESULTS

The mean age of the participants was 54.93 ± 6.20 years. VMS were reported in 160 women (54.2%). Sarcopenia was more prevalent in women without VMS (18.5%) than in those with (6.9%). Multivariate logistic regression showed that the prevalence of sarcopenia was inversely associated with the prevalence of VMS (odds ratio, 0.32; 95% CI, 0.15-0.67). Moreover, the paraspinal muscle index was positively associated with the prevalence of VMS (odds ratio, 1.06; 95% CI, 1.01-1.11) after adjusting for age, body mass index, waist circumference, adipose tissue area, history of hormone therapy, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, total cholesterol, insulin resistance, alcohol intake, and exercise.

CONCLUSIONS

VMS are less common in women with sarcopenia than in those without and are positively associated with paraspinal muscle mass in Korean menopausal women. Further longitudinal studies are required to investigate the causal relationships and underlying mechanisms.

The Relationship between Locomotive Syndrome Risk, Gait Pattern, and Standing Posture in Young Japanese Women: A Cross-Sectional Study

Young people are also at risk of developing locomotive syndrome for unclear reasons. Therefore, we sought to evaluate the locomotive syndrome risk in young Japanese women and the relationship between standing posture and gait patterns. We used survey materials for physical measurements, locomotive syndrome risk tests, normal and maximum walking test, a standing posture test, and physical activity measures. A questionnaire-based cross-sectional survey was conducted with 100 Japanese female university students. The participants were divided into two groups (high-risk and low-risk groups) based on locomotive syndrome risk tests. The high-risk group accounted for 65.0% of the total participants. The high-risk group had a significantly slower walking speed and lower walking stride length than the low-risk group during maximum walking. Additionally, this high-risk group had a more prone posture than the low-risk group. Furthermore, the low-risk group included more individuals who belonged to middle and high school athletic clubs than the high-risk group. The locomotive syndrome risk was related to the walking pattern, standing posture, and past exercise habits. Therefore, long stride length, correct standing posture, and exercise habits acquired from a young age are important measures for preventing locomotive syndrome in young adults.
