Abstract
We aimed to implement strength and balance training for elite adolescent male soccer players with functional ankle instability (FAI) to assess kinesiophobia, ankle instability, ankle function, and performance. This cluster randomized controlled trial comprised 51 elite adolescent male soccer players with FAI recruited from six different teams, divided into strength, balance, and control groups (SG, n = 17; BG, n = 17; and CG, n = 17, respectively). The SG and BG underwent strength and balance training sessions three times per week for 6 weeks. Primary outcomes were the Tampa scale for kinesiophobia-17 (TSK) and Cumberland ankle instability tool (CAIT) scores to assess kinesiophobia and FAI, respectively. Secondary outcomes were ankle strength (four directions), dynamic balance, static balance (ellipse, displacement, velocity), and performance (figure 8 and side-hop tests). A significant interaction effect was observed for both TSK and CAIT post-intervention (both, P < 0.01). In post hoc analyses, the BG had significantly better outcomes in reducing TSK. The SG and BG showed greater improvements in CAIT scores. Regression analysis indicated that CAIT severity correlated significantly with TSK (P = 0.039, R = 0.289). For secondary outcomes, the SG and BG were superior in terms of ankle dorsiflexion/inversion strength, static balance displacement, and figure-8 and side-hop tests (all, P < 0.05). The BG showed significantly better static balance ellipse results (P < 0.05). The 6-week intervention significantly enhanced kinesiophobia management, ankle stability, and performance. Balance training effectively mitigated kinesiophobia and improved balance, compared with strength training alone. Even small variations in CAIT severity can influence kinesiophobia, highlighting the potential benefits of balance training. Integrating balance training into training programs can address both physical and psychological aspects of ankle instability. Research is recommended to explore the longitudinal effects of these interventions and their potential to prevent injury recurrence.

Abstract
Purpose To investigate the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) combined with Bosu ball training on the injury potential during drop landing in people with chronic ankle instability (CAI). Methods A total of 40 participants with CAI were recruited and randomly divided into the tDCS + Bosu and Bosu groups. The people in the tDCS + Bosu group received intervention of tDCS combined with Bosu ball training, and those in the Bosu group received intervention of sham tDCS and Bosu ball training, for 6 weeks with three 20-min sessions per week. Before (week0) and after (week7) the intervention, all participants drop-landed on a trap-door device, with their affected limbs on a moveable platform, which could be flipped 24° inward and 15° forward to mimic an ankle inversion condition. The kinematic data were captured using a twelve-camera motion capture system. Two-way ANOVA with repeated measures was used to analyze data. Results Significant group-by-intervention interactions were detected in the peak ankle inversion angular velocity (p = 0.047, η2 p = 0.118), the time to peak ankle inversion (p = 0.030, η2 p = 0.139), and the plantarflexion angle at the moment of peak ankle inversion (p = 0.014, η2 p = 0.173). Post hoc comparisons showed that compared with week0, the peak ankle inversion angular velocity and the plantarflexion angle at the moment of peak ankle inversion were reduced, the time to peak ankle inversion was advanced in both groups at week7, and the changes were greater in the tDCS + Bosu group compared to the Bosu group. And, a significant intervention main effect was detected in the peak ankle inversion angle in the two groups (p < 0.001, η2 p = 0.337). Conclusion Compared with the Bosu ball training, the tDCS combined with Bosu ball training was more effective in reducing the injury potential during drop landing in people with CAI.

Abstract
Background Functional ankle instability (FAI) is a common injury. Traditional training improved the reported balance impairment and subjective sense of instability in athletes with FAI. Objective This study aims to compare the effects of traditional and virtual reality training on a subjective sense of instability and balance in athlete with FAI. Material and Methods In this single-blinded matched randomized clinical trial design, Fifty-four basketball players were randomly assigned in the virtual reality (n=27) or control (n=27) groups. All athletes performed 12 sessions Wii exercises or traditional training in the virtual reality and the control group, respectively, for three days a week. To assess the subjective-sense of instability and balance, we used Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT) and Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT), respectively. Measures were taken at pre- and post-test and one month after training as a follow-up. The between-group comparisons were done by the analysis of Covariance. Results At the pre-test, the CAIT score was 22.37, 22.04 in the control and virtual reality groups, respectively and at the post-test, these scores increased to 26.63, 27.26. The involved limb showed significant differences in posteromedial and posterior directions of the SEBT and CAIT score in the post-test and in the posterior direction and CAIT score in the follow-up. The virtual reality group had better performance than the control group but the effect size is small (cohen's d<0.2). Conclusion Based on our results, both training protocols were effective in reducing the subjective-sense of instability and improved balance in athletes with FAI. Moreover, virtual reality training was very attractive for the participants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is a common injury among athletes. Research has reported reduced dorsiflexion range of motion, impairment of proprioception, and decreased muscle strength of the ankle in people with CAI. The aim of this research was to examine the effects of 8-week core stability training on stable and unstable surfaces on ankle muscular strength, proprioception, and dorsiflexion range of motion (ROM) in athletes with CAI. METHODS Thirty-six athletes with CAI (age 22.42 ± 2.76 years; height 169.11 ± 3.52 cm; weight 68.46 ± 2.75 kg) participated in this study. They were divided into three groups: unstable-surface group (UG) (n = 12), stable-surface group (SG) (n = 12), and control group (CG) (n = 12). The UG and SG performed the core stability exercise protocol for 8 weeks, 3 sessions per week. The CG received their usual care and daily activities. Outcomes were measured pre-sessions and post-sessions. RESULTS The peak torque showed significant increases in the UG and SG compared with the CG during plantar flexion, dorsiflexion, inversion, and eversion (P < 0.05). There were also significant increases in UG compared with SG (P < 0.05). The proprioception showed significant decreases in UG compared with SG and CG (P < 0.05). The dorsiflexion ROM showed significant increases in UG and SG compared with CG. There were also significant increases in UG compared with SG (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS It seems that core stability exercises on trampoline surface helps improve the measured parameters in athletes with ankle instability. Therefore, this type of training is recommended as a therapeutic option for Individuals with CAI.

Abstract
Introduction In rural India the scarcity of physiotherapists and inequalities complicate the recovery of traumatized children. This study protocol will explore a digital physiotherapy intervention in children with ankle fracture in a low-resource setting to improve functional independence and quality of life. Methods and analysis A randomized clinical trial with a mixed quantitative-qualitative design will be carried out. It is a single-blind study, where the evaluator does not know the nature of the intervention. Sixty subjects will be enrolled and randomly divided into two groups: the experimental group (EG) will receive a 4-week digital physiotherapy intervention through an app in a recycled mobile device after hospital discharge; the control group (CG) will receive the physiotherapy standard care recommended for patients discharged from the hospital. Subjects will receive a baseline (T0-pre) assessment of Functional Independence and Quality of Life. At the end of the 4-week intervention (T1-post) a new assessment of the outcome will be performed adding data on adherence, satisfaction (ad hoc questionnaire and TSQ), and barriers of use. Qualitative outcomes will also be explored. The author's hypothesized that the implementation of a digital physiotherapy intervention is feasible and effective to improve functional independence and quality of life. This study protocol is the first to explore the effect of digital physiotherapy intervention in children's patients in a low resource setting (Anantapur). Discussion The successful delivery of the intervention, an optimal adherence records, the absence of significant adverse effects, user satisfaction level and the qualitative analysis of limitations, will demonstrate the effectiveness of these procedure. This study will add more evidence in support the use of digital physiotherapy practice as an effective tool. User particularities, provider's capacity, technological and cultural limitations, and considerations for vulnerable populations will be taken into account. Abstract
BACKGROUND Functional ankle instability (FAI) is defined as the subjective sensation of instability or "giving way" after an ankle sprain and occurs in approximately 40% of patients with lateral ankle instability. As an ankle joint rehabilitation intervention, heel raising exercises, toe jumping exercises, ankle joint proprioceptive exercises, as well as orthosis and taping are commonly applied to prevent the recurrence of an ankle joint injury. So this study was evaluated effect of quarter heel raising exercise (QHR) on balance and peroneus longus muscle strength in FAI subjects. METHODS Among 26 FAI subjects, 13 with FAI were assigned to the QHR group, and 13 with FAI were assigned to the control group which was no intervention. All of 30 subjects were evaluated Teskscan included static balance ability, Y balance test included dynamic balance ability with three directions which is anterior, posterolateral, posteromedial direction. Commander muscle testing included eversion/inversion strength ratio at pre- and post-intervention. RESULTS There was a significant interaction between group and time in static, dynamic balance, and strength. In QHR group, there was simple effect on static, dynamic balance, and strength. But control group showed no simple effect on static, dynamic balance, and strength. In the pre- and post-intervention differences between the groups. There was a significant difference in pre-intervention condition between the groups, but no significant difference between the groups in post-intervention in all conditions. CONCLUSIONS QHR exercise is useful for improving the balance ability and muscle strength of the peroneus longus muscle in FAI subjects.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess exercise therapies that aim to enhance proprioception in individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI). DATA SOURCES Five databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and EBSCO) were searched in October 2021. STUDY SELECTION Randomized controlled trials involving exercise therapy conducted on individuals with CAI were included. DATA EXTRACTION Data were extracted by two independent reviewers using a standardized form. Methodological quality and risk of bias were assessed with the PEDro scale. DATA SYNTHESIS The end-trial weighted mean difference and standard deviations were analyzed, and the synthetic value for the improvement in error scores of ankle joint position sense (JPS) in multiple directions was evaluated. RESULTS Eleven trials with 333 participants were eligible for inclusion in this systematic review and were included in the Network Meta-Analysis. Foot and ankle muscle strengthening exercise showed the highest probability of being among the best treatments (surface under the cumulative ranking (SUCRA)=74.6%). The next two were static balance exercise only (SUCRA=67.9%) and corrective exercise (SUCRA=56.1%). The SUCRA values of proprioceptive exercise, dynamic balance exercise only, aquatic exercise, rehabilitation exercise with brace, mixed static/dynamic balance exercise, and control were at relatively low levels, and scored at 49.6%, 48.8%, 47.8%, 47.7%, 44.0%, and 13.5%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Foot and ankle muscle strengthening exercise may have a good effect when used to improve JPS in individuals with CAI. Probably, the more complex balance exercise intervention becomes, the less effective the proprioceptive outcome. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42021240331.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of 5 weeks of electromyostimulation (EMS) of the peroneus longus muscle on balance and muscle strength in American Football (AmF) players. METHODS Thirty-two healthy male athletes (4 American Football team training sessions per week, college level) were randomly divided into the EMS and control groups. The EMS applications were conducted on the dominant peroneus longus muscle 3 times per week for 5 weeks, with each application lasting 25 minutes. Before and after the interventions, the strength of ankle dorsiflexion-plantar flexion and foot eversion-inversion was measured with isometric dynamometer and anterior-posterior sway, mediolateral sway, perimeter, and ellipse area were measured with the Technobody Balance System in unilateral stance positions, while eyes were open. RESULTS Changes between initial and final tests for dorsiflexion and eversion strength, and mediolateral sway for dynamic balance in the groups were significantly different (P = .039, P = .027, P = .030, respectively). CONCLUSION The EMS application had positive effects on muscle strength and dynamic balance of AmF players. The EMS can be used to improve isometric strength and dynamic balance in AmF players.

Background Functional ankle instability (FAI) of college football players is an important risk factor affecting their training and competition. Physical therapy and appropriate sports intervention can improve the stability of FAI patients. Previous studies have shown that Tai Chi (TC) and Kinesio taping (KT) can improve the posture control ability of FAI patients. However, whether Tai Chi combined with Kinesio taping effect patch can be used as an effective exercise for rehabilitation of college football players with FAI is not yet proven. Methods/design Fifty-three FAI college football players were randomly assigned to 3 groups: TC+KT (n = 20); TC+KTp (placebo Kinesio taping, KTp, placebo) (n = 17), and KT (n = 16). The TC+KT group received TC and KT functional correction technical intervention, the TC+KTp group received TC and placebo KT technical intervention, and the KT group received KT functional correction technical intervention. Each of the three groups received 30 min each time, 3 times a week, for a total of 6 weeks of intervention training. Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT) and UniPedal Stance Test (UST) at baseline (before), 4 weeks after intervention (middle), and 6 weeks after intervention (after) and Toe Touch Test (TTT) were evaluated. Discussion For the first time in this trial, the impact will be evaluated. If the results are the same as expected, they will provide evidence that Tai Chi combined with Kinesio taping sticking intervention can promote the posture control of college football players with FAI. Abstract
Objective To systematically evaluate the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) in the rehabilitation of patients with functional ankle instability (FAI). Methods Nine databases were researched, including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, OVID, CNKI, VIP, WanFang, SinoMed, ResearchGate, and WorldWildScience. The publication date deadline was May 22, 2021. To analyze the effect of VR rehabilitation of FAI, we systematically reviewed the literature using the RevMan 5.4 software. Main Results. Five randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included in the analysis, consisting of 137 patients with FAI; 68 of them were in the experimental group, 69 were in the control group, and all were university students. A comparison study was conducted between the two groups in terms of balance function, muscle performance, and proprioception. VR rehabilitation in the treatment of FAI was found to be significantly more effective using a 30-second single-leg standing test than conventional rehabilitation. The angular offset index of VR rehabilitation training was significantly lower than that of conventional balance training (0.66 ± 0.18 vs. 0.95 ± 0.21; P = 0.005). Conclusion VR rehabilitation is effective at treating FAI. However, RCTs with higher homogeneity are needed to provide a more reliable evidence-based foundation for clinical rehabilitation.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the effect of tape worn during weight bearing exercises on proprioception (i.e., ankle angle repositioning error) in participants with functional ankle instability. We employed a randomized, controlled clinical study in a laboratory setting, with 56 participants with functional ankle instability. Participants were randomly assigned to three groups: (a) weight bearing exercises without tape (n = 18), (b) weight bearing exercises with tape (n = 19) and controls not engaged in weight bearing exercises (n = 19). Weight bearing exercises included six weeks of bilateral squats in partial form with up to 45 degrees of knee flexion, and unilateral partial squats with full heel raise, and with full toe raise. In the taped condition, participants wore tape for six weeks with up to three tape replacements per week. Proprioception was measured as ankle repositioning error. Results showed that the mean angle repositioning error among participants in the active weight bearing groups was decreased by the taping intervention, relative to the control group's performance (p = 0.042). There were no significant differences between weight bearing exercise groups and control groups. The addition of kinesiology tape in weight bearing exercises can improve proprioception in active conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Problems related to ankle instability, decreased proprioceptive sensation, altered static and dynamic balance abilities are suggested as major representative factors that contribute to the recurrence of ankle sprains. OBJECTIVE To assess the effect of a three-week intervention (intervention emphasizing diagonal eccentric contraction (IEDEC) and intervention of general exercise (IGE)) on static and dynamic balance abilities, ankle strength and joint position sense at pre- and post-intervention, and at two- and three-week post-intervention. METHODS Twenty-five participants with ankle instability, including a history of ankle sprain and recurrent episodes of giving way, were enrolled in the study. They were randomly classified into the IEDEC group (n= 12) and the IGE group (n= 13). Dynamic balance was examined using the Y Balance Test, four-way ankle strength was measured, and the static balance was evaluated using the total displacement of the center of pressure (COP). To identify the joint position error, eversion and inversion of the ankle angle were measured. RESULTS The results revealed significant increases in ankle dynamic stability and strength at two and three weeks post-intervention (p< 0.05). Similarly, the total displacement of the COP differed significantly over time, with a higher COP during the initial measurement than at two and three weeks intervention (p< 0.05) General balance training with IEDEC can improve position sense during ankle inversion (p< 0.05). CONCLUSION General balance training with IEDEC improved the position sense of the inversion. Combined therapeutic intervention, such as with the manual technique, could be a beneficial approach to maximize the treatment effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lateral ankle sprains are among the common injuries in the physically active population in different age groups and progress to chronic ankle instability (CAI). Accordingly, the current study assesses the effectiveness of strengthening and proprioceptive training programs on proprioception and balance in those suffering from CAI. DESIGN Quasi-experimental design. METHODS Thirty-six individuals with self-reported CAI were assigned into three groups based on age: group 1 (23 ± 1.84), group 2 (35.80 ± 1.68), group 3 (44.25 ± 4.86), then performed strength and balance exercises for 6 weeks. The study furthermore measured pre- and post-training of joint position sense (JPS), static balance, dynamic balance, chronic ankle instability tool (CAIT) and lower extremity functional scale (LEFS). RESULTS Statistical analysis showed significant improvement (P < 0.01) on all outcome measures among all groups. In group 1, mainly the plantar flexion JPS improved to 3.7°, while in group 2 and group 3 the eversion JPS improved to 3.1° and 1.78° (P < 0.01). With reference to static balance with one's eyes closed and eyes open, the improvement in group 1 was 4.46, 11.05 s, group 2 was 2.23, 7.85 s and group 3 was 1.69, 4.68 s. In relation to dynamic balance, the development in group 1 was 5.85 cm, while group 2 was 4.71 cm and group 3 was 2.49 cm. Moreover, both CAIT and LEFS showed significant differences (P < 0.01) after training. CONCLUSION This study found that combined strengthening and proprioceptive training effectively improves stability, proprioception, balance, and self-reported functional outcomes.

Abstract
Background Impaired balance and strength commonly affect athletes with conditions like chronic ankle instability (CAI). Yet, clinical research surrounding the relationship between balance, strength, and CAI is still growing. Deeper investigation of these relationships is warranted to better inform clinical practice patterns when managing athletes with balance deficits. Purpose To investigate the relationship between single leg balance, ankle strength, and hip strength in healthy, active adults. Study Design Observational study. Methods Forty healthy participants (age 23.7 ± 4.9 years) were assessed for static balance, using a modified version of the Balance Error Scoring System (mBESS), as well as isometric strength of ankle and hip musculature via handheld dynamometry. Pearson's correlations were used to analyze relationships between balance and strength measures. Paired t-tests were utilized to compare dominant and non-dominant limb performance. Results Negligible to low, negative correlations were found between balance scores and hip extension strength (r = -0.24 to -0.38, p<0.05). High, positive correlations were found between ankle and hip strength measures (r = 0.75 to 0.84, p<0.05). When comparing dominant to non-dominant limbs, only minimal differences were noted in ankle eversion strength (mean difference = 6.0%, p<0.01) and hip extension strength (mean difference = 5.5%, p<0.01). Conclusions Minimal relationships were identified between static balance and isometric ankle and hip strength. Comparison of dominant and non-dominant limbs suggests that clinicians should expect relative symmetry in balance and strength in healthy adults. Thus, asymmetries found during clinical examination should raise suspicion of specific impairments that may lead to dysfunction. Level of Evidence 2c.

Abstract
Many stroke survivors have limited ankle range of motion (ROM) caused by weak dorsiflexors and stiff plantarflexors. Passive ankle stretching exercises with physical therapists or a stretching board are usually recommended, but these treatments have some limitations (e.g., cost and availability of physical therapists). In this paper, we assessed the results of ankle stretching exercises delivered by a robotic ankle stretching system called motorized ankle stretcher (MAS) that we developed or by a stretching board on ankle ROM, balance control, and gait performance. The 16 stroke survivors were randomly assigned to an intervention group (IG) or a control group (CG) and participated in seven sessions of dorsiflexion stretching exercises for three-and-a-half consecutive weeks. Laboratory assessments included pre-assessment (baseline at the beginning of the first exercise session), post-assessment (at the end of the seventh exercise session), and retention assessment (one month after the seventh exercise session). All assessments included ankle ROM for the affected side, static/dynamic balance control with a sensory organization test (SOT), walking speed, walking cadence, and step length for the affected and unaffected sides. During seven sessions of ankle stretching exercises, the IG performed them using the MAS, and the CG used a stretching board. The IG significantly improved ankle ROM, SOT scores (i.e., static/dynamic balance control), walking speeds, walking cadences, and step lengths for the unaffected side after completing the seven exercise sessions of ankle stretching exercises and maintained the enhancements at the retention assessment. The CG did not significantly improve across the majority of outcome measures except for the SOT scores between the pre-assessment and retention assessment. Future work will investigate the ideal intensity, frequency, and duration of exercising with the MAS. Our research on technology-assisted ankle rehabilitation, which can ascertain the level of persistent improvement, long-term performance retention, and carry-over effects in stroke survivors, can be used to inform future designs.
