Abstract
BACKGROUND Peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) placement is the most common invasive clinical procedure, often performed by nurses in hospitals worldwide. This study aimed to assess the effect of clinical guideline education on the knowledge and practice of nurses for PIVC placement based on short message service (SMS). METHODS In a quasi-experimental study with parallel groups, 66 nurses working in two general university hospitals in Iran were enrolled. Data was collected from 2017 to 2018. PIVC placement was assessed before, immediately, and 4 weeks after educational intervention based on SMS (twice a day for 10 days). RESULTS Nurses' knowledge score immediately after intervention versus before intervention was higher in the intervention group than in the control group (4.48 vs -0.70; p < 0.001). Nurses' knowledge score in 4 weeks after intervention versus immediately after intervention was lower in the intervention group than in the control group (0.03 vs 0.42; p = 0.014). Nurses' knowledge scores 4 weeks after intervention versus before intervention was higher in the intervention group than in the control group (4.52 vs -0.27; p < 0.001). Nurses' practice score immediately after intervention versus before intervention was higher in the intervention group than in the control group (0.57 vs -0.18; p = 0.174). Nurses' practice score 4 weeks after intervention vs immediately after intervention was higher in the intervention group than in the control group (-0.10 vs -0.38; p = 0.046). Nurses' practice scores 4 weeks after intervention versus before intervention was higher in the intervention group than in the control group (0.47 vs -0.56; p = 0.001). CONCLUSION Educational intervention by SMS had a significant effect on increasing the knowledge and practice of nurses toward clinical guidelines for PIVC placement. Therefore, it is suggested that educational intervention by SMS be conducted to improve nurses' knowledge as an effective educational method.

Abstract
The placement of a short peripheral intravenous catheter (sPIVC) is the most common invasive clinical procedure for patients requiring fluid infusion and multiple blood draws. Phlebitis and infiltration represent the most common catheter-related complications. Occlusions, dislocations, and infections are less frequent. Insufficient knowledge and skills may increase the risk of these complications. This review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of training programmes to reduce sPIVC failure amongst hospitalised patients. We will search PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Cochrane Vascular Specialized Register through the Cochrane Register of Studies, and Google Scholar. We defined the search query using the PICO framework (Participants: health professionals; Intervention: training programme; Comparison: No training programme; Outcomes: all-cause catheter failure). We will include experimental studies evaluating an educational programme to reduce early sPIVC failure amongst hospitalised patients. Two reviewers will independently screen studies for inclusion, extract data, and perform the risk of bias assessment using the Cochrane Effective Practice and Organisation of Care Risk of Bias tool for randomised controlled trials. This review will highlight important perspectives for future studies on the effectiveness of educational programmes focused on reducing the rate of sPIVC complications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The design of medical devices impacts upon the performance of healthcare professionals and patient safety. However, multiple devices serving the same function are often available. The purpose of this study was to use simulation as a means of examining the impact of differences in device design on (1) learning of, or attainment of behavioral fluency in, peripheral intravenous cannulation (PIVC); and (2) the generalization, or transfer, of learning on one device to performance of PIVC using an untrained device. METHODS A total of 25 final cycle medical students participated in this study which used a randomized two-group design. Participants were randomly assigned to learn PIVC using either a closed PIVC device (a single device which consists of an intravenous cannula with a pre-attached extension tube; n = 14) or an open PIVC device (a two-piece device made up of an intravenous cannula and a separate extension tube which is attached following insertion of the cannula; n = 11). Task analyses were developed for the performance of PIVC using each device. Subsequently, simulation-based fluency training was delivered to both groups using their assigned PIVC device, and continued for each participant until the fluency criterion was achieved. Following achievement of fluency, participants were asked to perform PIVC using the untrained device (i.e., the PIVC device that they had not been trained on). RESULTS All participants in both groups met the fluency criterion, and no significant differences were observed in the number of trials or total training required by groups to achieve fluency. Participants in both groups improved significantly from baseline (M = 11.69) to final training trial (M = 100). However, a significant decrement in performance (M = 81.5) was observed when participants were required to perform PIVC using the untrained device. CONCLUSIONS Participants achieved fluency in PIVC regardless of the device used. However, significant decrements in performance were observed when participants were required to perform PIVC using a novel device. This finding supports the need for careful consideration of devices purchased and supplied in the clinical setting, and the need for training prior to the introduction of novel devices or for new staff members.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence-based bundles have reduced central line bloodstream infection rates in adult intensive care units. To tackle peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) bloodstream infection, many hospitals have implemented PIVC insertion and maintenance bundles. However, the efficacy of PIVC bundles in preventing PIVC complications and infection in hospital patients is uncertain. The aim of this paper is to synthesize evidence on the effectiveness of PIVC insertion and maintenance bundles on preventing adverse events. METHODS In this systematic review, we searched multiple electronic databases, trial registries, and grey literature for eligible studies published in English (January 2000-December 2018) to identify intervention studies evaluating PIVC insertion or maintenance bundles with two or more components. Search terms: peripheral intravenous catheter/cannula, insertion, maintenance, bundle, infection, infiltration, extravasation, dislodgement, thrombosis, occlusion, and phlebitis. Two reviewers independently conducted data extraction and quality assessments using the Downs and Black checklist. RESULTS Of 14,456 records screened, 13 studies (6 interrupted time-series, 7 before-and-after) were included. Insertion and maintenance bundles included multiple components (2-7 items per bundle). Despite testing different bundles, 12 studies reported reductions in phlebitis and bloodstream infection, and one study reported no change in bloodstream infection and an increase in phlebitis rate. Methodological quality of all studies ranked between 'low' and 'fair'. CONCLUSIONS The effect of PIVC bundles on PIVC complications and bloodstream infection rates remains uncertain. Standardisation of bundle components and more rigorous studies are needed. PROSPERO registration number: CRD42017075142.

Abstract
This article discusses the implementation of 3 targeted interventions aimed at reducing infection rates in patients due to prolonged in situ intravascular catheters (IVCs) during their admission to the hospital. These IVCs are inserted by paramedics with Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) in prehospital settings. The 3 interventions involved were the application of "QAS-IVC" stickers by QAS paramedics to indicate QAS-inserted IVCs, the implementation of mandatory IVC documentation during patient handover, and clinician engagement to provide patient education on IVC infection signs. Audits undertaken in wards reflected that the interventions were apparent and beneficial; this is evident from the limited number of patients having in-dwelling QAS-IVC and increased awareness among medical staff and patients alike. We, however, did not have comparative data to objectively quantify the success of the interventions implemented.

Abstract
A short peripheral intravenous catheter or cannula (PIVC) is frequently used to deliver chemotherapy in oncology practice. Although safe and easy to insert, PIVCs do fail, leading to personal discomfort for patients and adding substantially to treatment costs. As the procedure of peripheral catheterization is invasive, there is a need for greater consistency in the choice, insertion and management of short PIVCs, particularly in the oncology setting where there is a growing trend for patients to receive many different courses of IV treatment over a number of years, sometimes with only short remissions. This article reviews best practice with respect to PIVCs in cancer patients and considers the necessity for bundling these actions. Two care bundles, addressing both insertion and ongoing care and maintenance, are proposed. These have the potential to improve outcomes with the use of short PIVCs for vascular access in oncology practice.

Abstract
Peripheral venous catheters (PVCs) are the simplest and most frequently used method for drug, fluid, and blood product administration in the hospital setting. It is estimated that up to 90% of patients in acute care hospitals require a PVC; however, PVCs are associated with inherent complications, which can be mechanical or infectious. There have been a range of strategies to prevent or reduce PVC-related complications that include optimizing patency through the use of flushing. Little is known about the current status of flushing practice. This observational study quantified preparation and administration time and identified adherence to principles of Aseptic Non-Touch Technique and organizational protocol on PVC flushing by using both manually prepared and prefilled syringes.

Abstract
Objective.Better understand the incidence, risk factors, and outcomes of peripheral venous catheter (PVC)-related Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia.Design.Retrospective study of PVC-related S. aureus bacteremias in adult patients from July 2005 through March 2008. A point-prevalence survey was performed January 9, 2008, on adult inpatients to determine PVC utilization; patients with a PVC served as a cohort to assess risk factors for PVC-related S. aureus bacteremia.Setting.Tertiary care teaching hospital.Results.Twenty-four (18 definite and 6 probable) PVC-related S. aureus bacteremias were identified (estimated incidence density, 0.07 per 1,000 catheter-days), with a median duration of catheterization of 3 days (interquartile range, 2-6). Patients with PVC-related S. aureus bacteremia were significantly more likely to have a PVC in the antecubital fossa (odds ratio [OR], 6.5), a PVC placed in the emergency department (OR, 6.0), or a PVC placed at an outside hospital (P = .005), with a longer duration of catheterization (P < .001). These PVCs were significantly less likely to have been inserted in the hand (OR, 0.23) or placed on an inpatient medical unit (OR, 0.17). Mean duration of antibiotic treatment was 19 days (95% confidence interval, 15-23 days); 42% (10/24) of cases encountered complications. We estimate that there may be as many as 10,028 PVC-related S. aureus bacteremias yearly in US adult hospitalized inpatients.Conclusion.PVC-related S. aureus bacteremia is an underrecognized complication. PVCs inserted in the emergency department or at outside institutions, PVCs placed in the antecubital fossa, and those with prolonged dwell times are associated with such infections.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Data concerning the effectiveness of strategies implemented to reduce short peripheral vein catheter (PVC)-related adverse events are scarce. METHODS A quasiexperimental study (2004-2011) was conducted to evaluate an intervention to reduce peripheral vein phlebitis (PVP) and PVC-related bloodstream infections (BSIs). Bundle intervention consisted of health care worker education and training, withdrawal of unnecessary catheters, exchange catheter policy, withdrawal of catheters at early stages of PVP, use of scales as a measuring tool, and repeated period-prevalence surveillance of PVC adverse events on wards. A Poisson exponentially weighted moving average control chart was used to assess time series analysis. RESULTS One thousand six hundred thirty-one patients with 2,325 short catheters inserted were prospectively followed. PVP decreased by 48% (12.1% [95% confidence interval (CI): 10.7-13.2] during the intervention period versus 23.3% [95% CI: 16.4-30.1] in preintervention period; P < .05), and no reduction of PVP measured as 1,000 catheter-days was noted (48.6 [95% CI: 46.1-51.2] vs 37.9 [95% CI: 24.5-51.4], P > .05). A significant incidence reduction in PVC-related BSIs and health care-acquired Staphylococcus aureus BSIs was also achieved. CONCLUSION A comprehensive multifaceted hospital approach was successful in reducing PVC-related adverse effects. Poisson exponentially weighted moving average control chart fits well as time series using Poisson data when very few events are present.

Abstract
This article aims to provide guidance for practitioners on intravenous therapy devices, their management and care. It explains the indications for their use and considerations when selecting devices for intravenous therapy and treatment. Both PVADs and CVADs are discussed in detail to provide the practitioner with a clear understanding for each. Infection control and how to reduce infection risks are also addressed with recommendations for best practice guidance on flushing devices, minimising complications and documentation.
