Abstract
Orofacial clefts (OC) represent some of the most common congenital malformations and affect multiple structures in the craniofacial region. There are a wide range of morphological OC types within the spectrum of both non-syndromic OC (NSOC) and syndromic OC, including cleft lip (CL); cleft lip and palate (CLP) and cleft palate (CP). Here, we describe the most frequent dental anomalies seen in the permanent dentition of individuals with NSOC, comparing them between the three main cleft types (CL, CLP, CP). We present these findings from the perspective of prevalence relating to each anomaly, as well as the clinical characteristics and potential impact in the rehabilitation process. The investigation of dental anomalies associated with NSOC is important, helping to expand the phenotypic characterization of NSOC, improve initial diagnostics and establish appropriate rehabilitation and counseling.

Taurodontism—Prevalence, Extent, and Clinical Challenge in Ashkelon, Israel—A Retrospective Study. APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2022. Abstract
Taurodontism, a known morpho-anatomic variation in the shape of teeth, has already attracted substantial attention. The aim of this study is to contribute to this by discussing its direct impact on the dental practitioner via an evaluation of the prevalence of taurodontism in molars in Ashkelon, Israel. This retrospective study analyzed panoramic radiographs of 624 patients (330 males, 294 females), aged of 9–29 years—2849; first and second permanent molars were screened. Objective measurements and variables were used and analyzed using statistical SPSS version 27 (IBM, Chicago, IL, USA). Taurodontism was observed in 33.6% of the patients and was more prevalent among females (53% vs. 47%) and in maxillary molars compared to mandibular molars (57% vs. 43%). The overall prevalence of hypotaurodontism, mesotaurodontism, and hypertaurodontism was 10.8%, 0.5%, and 0.2%, respectively. No statistical difference between right and left sides was discovered, however, taurodont teeth in the upper left side exhibited the highest frequency, while the lower left side had the least. The highest occurrence of hypotaurodontism was on the upper right second molar followed by upper left first and second molars. The clinical challenge posed in endodontic, orthodontic, and restorative dentistry is discussed, and suitable alternative approaches are proposed for dental practitioners.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To analyse prevalence, pattern, and severity of taurodontism in individuals with Van der Woude syndrome (VWS) exhibiting cleft palate and compare with aged-matched non-syndromic cleft palate (NSCP) and non-cleft controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred and seventy-eight dental panoramic tomographs (DPTs) (105 girls and 73 boys) consisting of 42 VWS patients (x¯=8.55±1.02 years), 42 NSCP patients (x¯=8.59±1.02 years), and 94 normative non-cleft children (x¯=8.79±1.16 years) were assessed and their first permanent molars evaluated. Measurement 3 of the taurodontism index developed by Shifman and Chanannel with the Tulensalo modification was used. Prevalence, pattern, and severity were compared between groups. Statistical differences were determined by one-way analysis of variance and Fisher test. Repeatability was calculated by Cohens Kappa test. RESULTS The prevalence of taurodontic molars was 59.5% in VWS, 45.2% in NSCP, and 26.6% in non-cleft controls. The prevalence and severity of taurodontism in VWS and NSCP were significantly higher than in non-cleft children in all first permanent molars. There was no significant difference in prevalence and severity between VWS and NSCP. The odds for having taurodontism in the VWS group was approximately double compared to the NSCP group. Most of the taurodontic molars showed hypotaurodontism and taurodontism occurred bilaterally more frequently than unilaterally. CONCLUSION This study shows a higher prevalence of taurodontism in VWS and NSCP. Most taurodontic molars are hypotaurodontic and most occur bilaterally.

Abstract
Objective: To study occlusal features and their relation to caries experience in Hong Kong Chinese preschool children. Methods: Seven kindergarten classes in Hong Kong were selected using a stratified random sampling method, and the 4- and 5-year-old Chinese kindergarten children were invited to join the survey. Two calibrated dentists performed the clinical examinations in the kindergartens. Occlusion features, including incisal overjet; canine and molar relationship; median diastema; and primate space as well as malocclusion features, including crossbite; anterior open bite; and scissor bite, were recorded. Caries experience was recorded with the dmft index. Results: A total of 538 children were invited to participate in the study, and finally 495 children were examined (92%). Approximately half (52%) had a normal incisor relationship. Most children had a class I canine relationship (left-79%; right-75%). Approximately two-thirds had a flush terminal plane (left-64%; right-65%). Most children (76%) had a maxillary primate space, and 47% had a mandibular primate space. The prevalence of median diastema, anterior crossbite, and unilateral posterior crossbite was 30%, 12% and 1%, respectively. No bilateral posterior crossbite or scissor bite was found. Approximately half (49%) had caries experience. The mean dmft score was 2.1. Gender and age were not associated with either the studied occlusal features or the mean dmft score (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Approximately half of the Hong Kong preschool children studied had a normal occlusion, and two-thirds of them had a flush terminal plane. About three-quarters of them had a maxillary primate space, and half of them had a mandibular primate space. Their occlusal traits were not associated with caries experience and prevalence.

Abstract
The most common root malformations in humans arise from either developmental disorders of the root alone or disorders of radicular development as part of a general tooth dysplasia. The aim of this review is to relate the characteristics of these root malformations to potentially disrupted processes involved in radicular morphogenesis. Radicular morphogenesis proceeds under the control of Hertwig's epithelial root sheath (HERS) which determines the number, length, and shape of the root, induces the formation of radicular dentin, and participates in the development of root cementum. Formation of HERS at the transition from crown to root development appears to be very insensitive to adverse effects, with the result that rootless teeth are extremely rare. In contrast, shortened roots as a consequence of impaired or prematurely halted apical growth of HERS constitute the most prevalent radicular dysplasia which occurs due to trauma and unknown reasons as well as in association with dentin disorders. While odontoblast differentiation inevitably stops when growth of HERS is arrested, it seems to be unaffected even in cases of severe dentin dysplasias such as regional odontodysplasia and dentin dysplasia type I. As a result radicular dentin formation is at least initiated and progresses for a limited time. The only condition affecting cementogenesis is hypophosphatasia which disrupts the formation of acellular cementum through an inhibition of mineralization. A process particularly susceptible to adverse effects appears to be the formation of the furcation in multirooted teeth. Impairment or disruption of this process entails taurodontism, single-rooted posterior teeth, and misshapen furcations. Thus, even though many characteristics of human root malformations can be related to disorders of specific processes involved in radicular morphogenesis, precise inferences as to the pathogenesis of these dysplasias are hampered by the still limited knowledge on root formation.

Abstract
Taurodontism is anatomical and morphological alteration in the shape of the tooth. In taurodontism the crowns appear larger and the roots shorter compared to the normal anatomy of the respective tooth. The incidence of taurodontism in deciduous is very low and is also not very common in permanent dentition. The endodontic treatment protocol of taurodontic tooth is challenging. Taurodontic tooth requires a very cautious approach in identifying the root canal orientation and presence of any extra or lateral canals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of the study was to present the prevalence of taurodontism in the permanent dentition in individuals with Laurence-Moon/Bardet-Biedl syndromes (LM/BBS). METHODS AND PARTICIPANTS Thirty-nine individuals were studied, which comprises the whole population of known LM/BBS patients in Norway. Data were collected retrospectively. Panoramic radiographs (OPG) were evaluated to document taurodontism. RESULTS Taurodontism was found in 82.9% of the individuals with LM/BBS. The second mandibular molars had the highest (72.3%) prevalence of taurodontism and the first mandibular molars the lowest (58.2%). CONCLUSION This study suggests that taurodontism should be included as a minor diagnostic criterion for the Laurence-Moon/Bardet-Biedl syndromes (LM/BBS).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Taurodontism is a clinical entity with a morpho-anatomical change in the shape of the tooth, which was thought to be absent in modern man. Taurodontism is mostly observed as an isolated trait or a component of a syndrome. Various techniques have been devised to diagnose taurodontism. AIM The aim of this study was to analyze whether a biometric analysis was useful in diagnosing taurodontism, in radiographs which appeared to be normal on cursory observations. SETTING AND DESIGN This study was carried out in our institution by using radiographs which were taken for routine procedures. MATERIAL AND METHODS In this retrospective study, panoramic radiographs were obtained from dental records of children who were aged between 9-14 years, who did not have any abnormality on cursory observations. Biometric analyses were carried out on permanent mandibular first molar(s) by using a novel biometric method. The values were tabulated and analysed. STATISTICS Fischer exact probability test, Chi square test and Chi-square test with Yates correction were used for statistical analysis of the data. RESULTS Cursory observation did not yield us any case of taurodontism. In contrast, the biometric analysis yielded us a statistically significant number of cases of taurodontism. However, there was no statistically significant difference in the number of cases with taurodontism, which was obtained between the genders and the age group which was considered. CONCLUSION Thus, taurodontism was diagnosed on a biometric analysis, which was otherwise missed on a cursory observation. It is therefore necessary from the clinical point of view, to diagnose even the mildest form of taurodontism by using metric analysis rather than just relying on a visual radiographic assessment, as its occurrence has many clinical implications and a diagnostic importance.
