Correlation between ways of coping and quality of life in Iranian husbands of women with breast cancer

Find Meaning and Help: The Lived Experiences and Support Needs of Iranian Muslim Husbands of Women Undergoing Mastectomy From Diagnosis to the End of Life

The husbands of women undergoing mastectomy have been introduced as the patient's primary caregivers. This research was conducted to investigate the lived experiences of Iranian Muslim husbands of women undergoing mastectomy. In this phenomenological research, 18 participants were interviewed, and Van Menan's method of interpretation was used to interpret the data. 8 themes were extracted from the data analysis: physical problems, living in the shadow of fear and discomfort, and destiny is not blameless, modified roles, marital coldness, imposing a financial burden, spiritual care, and support failure. It is concluded that the husbands of these patients need comprehensive support, and the current support is not enough.

Role playing and interdependence among husbands of Iranian women after a mastectomy

BACKGROUND

Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer among women.

AIM

To investigate the impact of breast cancer on the husbands of Iranian women.

METHODS

A content analysis based on a Callista-Roy adaptation model was conducted on 23 patients with breast cancer and their husbands and therapists. After asking questions about coping with cancer through telephone interviews, the following subcategories were obtained: role play and interdependence. Data analysis was completed via the Elo and Kyngas approach.

RESULTS

Data analysis led to the production of 51 initial codes from participants' experiences. The category role-playing included three further sub-categories: primary role, secondary role and tertiary role. Independence/dependence problems included seven sub-categories: personal beliefs, love and heartfelt attachment, organised support, non-organised support, support failure, economic problems and dependence problems/independence.

CONCLUSIONS

Husbands of women who have had a mastectomy have to take on new roles in their life in order to care for their wife. Also, despite the financial, spiritual, psychological, and medical support that they receive, husbands still felt that the support was insufficient.

Analysis of load status and management strategies of main caregivers of patients with malignant tumors of digestive tract

Caregiver load refers to the subjective and objective negative impact of caregivers in the care of patients, and excessive load will have a serious impact on patients and caregivers themselves and can reduce their quality of life. For the main caregivers, it not only needs to care for the patients in life and daily life, but also needs to pay the cost of treatment for the patients, coupled with the need to carry out their own original work, life, etc. excessive life pressure, economic pressure, work pressure, emotional pressure, etc. lead to heavy load of the main caregivers, which can easily cause caregivers to have different degrees of psychological problems, which will cause serious adverse effects on the caregivers themselves and cancer patients, not conducive to the construction of a harmonious family and society. This article analyzes the current situation of primary caregiver burden in patients with gastrointestinal malignant tumors, analyzes its influencing factors, and specifies specific treatment strategies. It is hoped to provide scientific guidance for later related research and application.

Coping Strategies for Stress and Self-Efficacy in Patients With Cancer and Their Spouses: A Cross-Sectional Study

BACKGROUND

Cancer is one of the most important diseases of the present century worldwide. Patients and their spouses can find more difficulty accepting the diagnosis of cancer than its phases of treatment. Both the physical health and mental health of the patient and spouse are important in the process of recovery from cancer and its treatment.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between coping strategies for stress and self-efficacy in patients with cancer and that of their spouses.

METHODS

In this descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study, 91 patients and their 91 spouses completed the Endler and Parker Coping Inventory, the Sherer General Self-Efficacy Scale, and a demographic information questionnaire.

RESULTS

The problem-oriented coping style was used more than the other strategies by patients with cancer and their spouses. The least used coping style by patients and their spouses was the avoidance style. The self-efficacy of patients and their spouses was above average. Self-efficacy was directly and moderately correlated with problem-oriented coping style (P < .001) and inversely and moderately correlated with emotion-oriented coping style (P < .001).

CONCLUSIONS

Adoption of strategies like training and consulting may enhance the problem-focused coping style and reduce emotion-focused coping style and therefore lead to increased self-efficacy in patients and their spouses.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

Healthcare providers', especially nurses', knowledge and sensitivity about the coping strategies of patients with cancer and their spouses may help providers select more effective interventions for improving patients' and their spouses' effective coping styles and self-efficacy.
