Extraction and Characterization of Cellulose from Natural Areca Fiber

Characterization of new natural cellulosic fiber from Calamus tenuis (Jati Bet) cane as a potential reinforcement for polymer composites

This study investigates the physical, structural, chemical, thermal, mechanical, and morphological properties of the fibers of Calamus tenuis canes and compares the findings with various lignocellulosic fibers to find the place of these fibers as reinforcements for polymer composites. Chemical analysis confirms the presence of 37.43 ± 1.40% cellulose, 31.06 ± 1.03% hemicellulose, and 28.42 ± 0.81% lignin in Calamus tenuis cane fibers, moreover, the presence of these constituents is also confirmed by Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopic (FTIR) analysis. The X-Ray diffraction (XRD) analysis determines the crystallinity index of 37.38 ± 0.27% and the crystallite size of 0.87 ± 0.03 nm of the samples. The thermogravimetric analysis ensures that the Calamus tenuis cane fibers are thermally stable up to 210 ± 5 °C. The Weibull distribution analysis is employed to estimate the tensile properties of Calamus tenuis canes, which reveal a tensile strength of 37.5 ± 2 MPa, Young's modulus of 1.05 ± 0.08 GPa, and an elongation at break of 18.94 ± 4.26%. The roughness of the fibers' outer surface is confirmed by SEM micrographs and AFM analysis, suggesting that it could enhance the adhesion between fibers and matrix during the fabrication of composites.

Melt Processible Biodegradable Blends of Polyethylene Glycol Plasticized Cellulose Diacetate with Polylactic Acid and Polybutylene Adipate-Co-Terephthalate

Enhancing the melt processability of cellulose is key to broadening its applications. This is done via derivatization of cellulose, and subsequent plasticization and/or blending with other biopolymers, such as polylactic acid (PLA) and polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT). However, derivatization of cellulose tends to reduce its biodegradability. Moreover, traditional plasticizers are non-biodegradable. In this study, we report the influence of polyethylene glycol (PEG) plasticizer on the melt processibility and biodegradability of cellulose diacetate (CD) and its blends with PLA and PBAT. CD was first plasticized with PEG (PEG-200) at 35 wt%, and then blended with PLA and PBAT using a twin-screw extruder. Blends of the PEG plasticized CD with PLA at 40 wt% and with PBAT at 60 wt% were studied in detail. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) showed that PEG reduced the glass transition of the CD from ca. 220 °C to less than 100 °C, indicating effective plasticization. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the CD/PEG-PBAT blend had a smoother morphology implying some miscibility. The CD/PEG-PBAT blend at 60 wt% PBAT had an elongation-to-break of 734%, whereas the CD/PEG-PLA blend had a tensile strength of 20.6 MPa, comparable to that of the PEG plasticized CD. After a 108-day incubation period under simulated aerobic composting, the CD/PEG-PBAT blend at 60 wt% PBAT exhibited a biodegradation of 41%, whereas that of the CD/PEG-PLA at 40 wt% PLA was 107%. This study showed that melt processible, biodegradable CD blends can be synthesized through plasticization with PEG and blending with PBAT or PLA.

Encapsulation of Gemor Bark Extract Using Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide-Modified Nanocellulose

Gemor (Nothaphoebe coriacea) is one of the plants of Non-Timber Forest Product typical of wetlands with secondary metabolite compounds such as alkaloids, steroids, flavonoids, triterpenoids, and phenolics. Besides being used as an insecticide, gemor bark also has antioxidant activities, anti-influenza, antivirus, antiherpes, and anti-inflammatory. This study aimed to encapsulate gemor bark extract using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-modified nanocellulose to increase the effectiveness of its use. The result showed that gemor bark extract had an IC50 value of 39.97 ppm. In comparison, encapsulated gemor bark extract (Gemor-Nc-4 mM CTAB) had an excellent antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 98.41 ppm and encapsulation efficiency of 53.70 %.

Integrated strategies for enzyme assisted extraction of bioactive molecules: A review

Conventional methods of extracting bioactive molecules are gradually losing pace due to their numerous disadvantages, such as product degradation, lower efficiency, and toxicity. Thus, in light of the rising demand for these bioactive, enzymes have garnered much attention for their efficiency in extraction. However, enzyme-assisted extraction is also plagued with a high capital cost that cannot justify the extraction yields obtained. In order to mitigate these problems, enzyme-assisted extraction can be consorted with non-conventional methods. This review includes current progress concerning the combined approaches while converging the recent advancements in the field that outperformed conventional extraction processes. It also highlights the design of biocatalyst and key parameters involved in the effective extraction of bioactive molecules. An integrated approach for efficiently extracting polyphenols, essential oils, pigments, and vitamins has been comprehensively reviewed. Furthermore, the different immobilization strategies have been discussed for large-scale implementation of enzymes for extraction. The integration of advanced non-conventional methods with enzyme-assisted extraction will open new avenues to enhance the overall extraction efficiency.
